Believe in good, not in evil

March 11, 2019 | 24 comments

I’ve heard many patients over the years bemoan their lack of faith in God, wonder why a healing hasn’t come yet, and utter something like, “If I could only believe.”

I often reply, “You always believe in something. Move that belief over to God and find the healing you’re looking for!”

There is no requirement that we believe in evil.

Just because evil appears real to the mortal mind doesn’t mean it is real. It’s not. It’s an illusion of the physical senses that can be overcome with Truth and Love. Jesus Christ proved this unequivocally, and millions of people have proved the same since.

Christian Science teaches one to never believe in evil. God is all-powerful good. The omnipotence of God understood and practiced, defeats evil.

To believe in God, is to lose faith in evil. As one has more faith in good than in evil, healing happens.

In everyday life, there may be times when evil appears real, but when we put Christian Science into practice and move our faith from evil over to God, we find the spiritual inspiration we need to conquer that evil.

You are under no obligation to believe in evil. It’s not necessary.

You are free to move your faith over to God and find quicker healing.

It’s inevitable that all evil submit to the omnipotence of good, and the sooner the better. Make it sooner by putting your faith in God. It’s the happier and healthier way to live.

“Jesus said: ‘These signs shall follow them that believe; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover’” Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health, p. 38.

  1. Thank you so much Evan for the request to believe only in good which is the almighty, omnipresent good God. Studying the Bible and Science and Health by reading the weekly lesson sermon helps us, oh more, convinces us of the absolute goodness of God, which conquers a l l evil. I find it always very helpful, that Mrs. Eddy says in SH, that God gives us faith and understanding with which we can defend us against all evil!
I can only always be grateful that God lead me to Christian Science, the realm of all Good!

  2. Evan! Love it!

Trying to remove a “chronic condition” is like an ant trying to move a mountain. Only realize the truth – there is no evil – and move that belief on over to God!

  3. ‘Your influence for good depends upon the weight you throw in the right scale” (S & H p192).
‘Throw’ is an active verb, so we need to actively side with good, the only real.
    Thanks for this!

    1. Very active timely help Patricia. Actively “throw” thought to the side of good adds to treatment here, to know NOW that a missing wallet taken during a multi-state bus ride, is on it’s way to it’s rightful owner. Knowing and actively throwing thought “to the side of good” accomplishes this healing!

  4. I acknowledge that God is the only power as soon as I awake in the morning when a new days begins. I also acknowledge this all-powerful good (and the fact that God is taking care of me day and night) should I awaken during the night and find myself with scattered thoughts of this and that or mulling over what may have happened yesterday, what I need to do today, etc. It has made a huge difference in keeping my thought aligned to only what is good and true! I now naturally feel God’s presence of good operating and guess what? – I am at peace and sleeping much better.
    Thank you, God!

  5. That was really wonderful! Thank you! I remind myself every day—usually several times a day—“God is good, hence good is omnipotent and omnipresent.” (SH p. 172)

  6. Here is a verse from a poem “Turn toward the light”by Carolyn Abbott Sebbard (Sentinel, April 10, 2000) that I have used over the years:
    “I once felt so needy,
    so void of the light:
    How could I find
    inspiration just right?
    I looked at that flower
    not working so hard,
and just let go and said,
    “Leave it to God!”
Believing and trusting God is always the answer to any problem.

    1. Thank you! It’s true, we work so hard in the wrong direction sometimes. All we need is to turn to God and let go. God will not let us go.

  7. Thank you for this today, it was just what I needed. I loved your reply to your patients, Evan, it’s simply so true. I was having trouble with worries, about some parenting responsibilities, that kept playing over and over in my thoughts-those lies about what if this or that happens, and feeling out of control of it all, and this just instantly made me relax. It helped move my thoughts over to God !! And stick with what I know to be true. Stop giving any more time to anything else. These daily blogs are wonderful. So inspiring the way it can instantly recalculate my thinking to the side of Truth. And all those who add their thoughts to the blog are helpful also. So grateful ! It often turns my morning right around and gives me some really good thoughts to use all day long !

  8. Wonderful, “believe in Good(God) not in evil.” To me this is strongly connected to, Trust God! I have been working on letting go of self and trusting God more. When I am able to be humble and trust God, I feel so light and free.
Two things happened to me yesterday that seemed very frightening and while I was working to be unafraid of the 1st thing, the 2nd one hit unexpectedly. I was very afraid! Of course both things ended harmoniously. So, instead of continuing to be alarmed by “what could have happened” which I easily could, I’m still working today to see that God was in control the entire time. Nothing was ever out of order or control. Two ideas I’ve come across recently keep coming to me together. I shared it once last week, but will share again. “Don’t go on a witch hunt” and “mental darkness is senseless error.” Don’t go on a witch hunt for evil/errors origin or cause. There isn’t one, period! And mental darkness is senseless error. It’s nothing, no matter what it’s claim to reality may be. Just know if you seem to find yourself in any mental darkness, it can’t be real. You can say no, let go, and then turn from it. The last thought I’ll share is something I found last week in Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy: The Truth is simple! So simple that we often seemingly look above, through or at everything else but it.

  9. Helpful! Thanks, all!

Here’s some input from my study this morning:

“You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being.”

  10. SPOT ON Evan! We have an Executive Board meeting and I will read this as it directly pertains to some current challenges. Thank you.

  11. Thank you so much everyone and Evan. I am so grateful for all of you. May your day be filled with God’s infinite blessings.

  12. “It matters not what be thy lot, so Love doth guide”

  13. Thanks, Evan and all. To truly feel and know that God, good, is All-in-All, the only presence and power, frees us from fear of evil in any form, and gives us liberty! So much to be grateful for.
