Book burning

September 10, 2010 | 5 comments

The intent of a little church in Gainesville, FL, to hold a book burning ceremony of the Quran this Saturday sure illustrates how the acts of a few claimants to Christianity can give Christianity a bad name.

What I find in the teachings of Jesus Christ is a religion of love, not of hate and provocation.

Jesus certainly had people he disagreed with. But he did not burn their books and stir up heated emotions that created even more anger and hatred in the world. He loved them, even to the point of forgiving his crucifiers.

I pray that the misguided notions of this little group in Florida are redirected by Saturday in the direction of pouring love into this world, not more venom and anger.

Evil is not destroyed by building it up and fueling prejudices. It’s destroyed by love. And the demand to love more starts with us.

  1. Thank you, Evan, for the right perspective on this – more love is what is needed; not condemnation or criticism. Vicki

  2. In addition to prayer, I took action. I contacted all of the major TV networks suggesting that if none of them covered the event it would defeat their purpose. I was glad to see Hillary Clinton express the same thought, how great it would be if nobody showed up from the media, in her remarks about the proposed burning. Lori

  3. I see the minister’s end goal as not burning any books but a clever ploy to halt the building of the unncessary 110th mosque in NYC. Maybe when he and the muslim cleric meet on Sat. he can offer a few bible for the cleric to burn? I applaud the minister attempt to not bow down to islams well orchestrated and well planned wish to take over the world one nation at a time.

  4. When Peter cut off the ear of a temple servant, Jesus could have urged on the fight and struggle, yet he didn’t. Instead he said something very profound that not only his disciples heard, but also all the guards: “Put up your sword; for all who live by the sword will perish by the sword.” Then Jesus restored the man’s ear -even though this man had come to haul Jesus away to death. Jesus didn’t have to restore the ear, yet he did. Jesus also said, “Love your enemies, do good to them who hate you and despitefully use you.” Jesus did not fear the temple, or its guards, or powerful priests… Doesn’t matter by what name these things go by, he demonstrated for all of us, for all time, the power of divine love. The prophets Elijah and Daniel demonstrated the Christly love, too, centuries before Jesus. Instead of living in fear and hatred, we need to learn to let go of human/mortal opinions and demonstrate the power, in the hear and now, of all-encompassing love. Jesus and countless others in the Bible taught us how to heal all sorts of world problems without ever lifting a weapon or saying an unkind word.
