Conquering mortal mind

Mortal mind is a term used in Christian Science to designate all that is evil and sinful.

Since there appears to be a lot of sin and evil happening in the world, the phrase receives frequent usage by students of Christian Science.

For instance, when something bad happens, “That’s mortal mind,” one may retort. Or if struggling with sickness, one might reply, “Mortal mind sure seems to have a hold on me.” And so on.

In Truth, there is no mortal mind. There is only the one Mind, God. But this is a reality that must be demonstrated by overcoming evil with good in everyday life.

So, the questions often loom, “How do I conquer mortal mind? How do I prove it has no power or sway over my thinking and actions?”

I found one answer to these questions on page 210 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Mary Baker Eddy wrote,

“The expression mortal mind is really a solecism, for Mind is immortal….Because, in obedience to the immutable law of Spirit, this so-called mind is self-destructive, I name it mortal.”

What caught my attention was the part of her statement that reads: “…in obedience to the immutable law of Spirit, this so-called mind is self-destructive…”

Here is a solution for conquering mortal mind.

When mortal mind is obedient to moral and spiritual law, it self-destructs.

We conquer mortal mind by obeying moral and spiritual law.

Mortal mind is not a power outside our thinking that can control and manipulate our health and status. It’s an illusion. It’s a false claim to power, which when believed, seems real and powerful, but when stripped of its pretense, loses sway.

So, when we struggle and labor under the illusion of mortal mind power, the way to break that mesmerism is to obey God. When we obey the law, “Have one God,” mortal mind can no longer be a god to us and seem to exert influence. It self-destructs. It goes away. It fades into its native nothingness. And the one Mind is seen and felt in control. Healing happens.

So, never fear mortal mind. Undo it. Conquer its falsities by obeying divine Mind.

Obedience to Truth is a pathway out of suffering to health and happiness.

  1. Now this is what I call “Getting Down To Basics”.. and learning the basics and practicing them ever day leads to true Spirit Views…

  2. thank you again. Seems we need to always focus on the truth. It can seem at times when we try to ‘manage’ mortal mind that it is some kind of entity when it is just the mental garbage floating around.

  3. I had to come back and thank Tobias for the wonderful words:
“When mortal mind speaks, nothing is being said” This strong idea was responsible for a significant “aha” I had yesterday. I reasoned that God’s word were all that had meaning. The noisy suggestions of mortal input in my thought were NOTHING. No power, no presence, no intelligence, no cause or effect. Truly, when mortal mind speaks, nothing is being said! Thanks, Tobias! Well said!

  4. The print size on my laptop is fine, but when I read your blog on my tablet the print is so tiny. Is there a way or an icon to click to make it larger? I’ve tried the finger stretching movement and tapping the screen which seem to work on most web sites but not on yours. Thought maybe others were having this problem and might know a solution or maybe an icon could be added to enlarge the print so more could enjoy these wonderful sharings. Thank you. Evan for all you share with us and for the great comments which add so much.

    1. Hi Lyn,

Changing the font size is an action I believe you have to figure out from your end. There should be a zoom option on your computer to make the font size larger for you to read. Thanks.
