Don’t build on the sand

Take a good look at this tower.  See anything unusual?

It’s leaning!  Yep, two meters off plumb.
When construction on this tower in Delft began in the 1300’s, the builders moved a canal away from the Old Church to make room for the tower. They filled in the old canal with sand, and started to build.
Years later, bricklayers noticed a lean in their tower. This was not good! The sand was not firm enough to hold the tower in place. The engineers firmed up the foundation, fixed the fault, and claimed the tower was safe. Many have doubted.

After hearing the story, I thought about Jesus’ parable of the house built on the rock and the house built on the sand:

“…whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”  (Matthew 7:24-27)

If you ever feel like you’re teetering on edge, or leaning off kilter, take an honest look at the foundation on which your thinking is founded.
Are you reasoning out from a firm foundation of spiritual truth, or are you reasoning out from a wobble-prone base of material evidence, human opinion, fear or speculation?
Build on the Rock of Truth and the teetering will disappear. When you reason out from what God knows to be true, you’ll stand straight and tall again, and any lean in the wrong direction will go away.

  1. What a wonderful blog. Perfect to send on to a dear one who told me she felt rocky! I told her she was secure always on the Rock of Truth! Love the way you see spiritual lessons in all that you are seeing on your trip. Resolving things into thoughts always, aren’t you, Evan? 🙂

  2. The reason why we “Resolve things into thoughts,” is because material things, in reality are symbols of spiritual truths, and if we fully understand that, then all things material will give way to all things spiritual, which is really reality.

  3. For the past few days, I have been floundering in sand. The charger for my wheelchair failed. I was frantic trying to resolve this on my own. I called a local DME(Durable Medical Equipment) for assistance and they treated me like dirt as I did not get my chair through them. My nurse called them several times on my behalf and said they were very rude.

I did not call The Scooter Store because the closest mechanic was in Albuquerque and it would take days to get service.

I called the Scooter Store only to be informed that they were in bankruptcy and had lost 10% of the labor force and that service would be in 7-10 business days.

Not once, throughout all this, did I personally acknowledge God’s presence in my life; I finally got the message and said:

“God it is You who makes me want not, who provides me what I need.”

The words barely left my lips when the phone rang and it was a Scooter Store mechanic telling me that he would be there shortly.

My foundation is once again rock.
