Finding inner calm

January 20, 2022 | 17 comments

The controlled person is a powerful person. He who always keeps his head will always get ahead. Edwin Markham said, “At the heart of the cyclone tearing the sky is a place of central calm.” The cyclone derives its power from a calm center. So does a person.

~ Norman Vincent Peale

When we are clear that God governs, and not mortal mind, we find our calm center. Cyclones of fear, worry and sin may swirl around us, but they will not disturb us. We stay centered with God in a Mind-state marked by spiritual peace, poise, and dominion. We move ahead with whatever work God has appointed us to do and leave the turmoil of mortal mind behind.

  1. Am grateful for this today Evan. Following a somewhat discordant church meeting after which a member promptly resigned, I was feeling anything but calm. It was hard not to take sides. I could also see both points of view. The following day when emails were flying back and forth between members I felt I needed to find peace. Hymn 118 is a favourite of mine and the second verse reads:

    Holy Spirit, Peace divine,
    Still this restless heart of mine;
Speak to calm the tossing sea,
    Stayed in Thy tranquility.

I have become calm about the situation, knowing that God is in control not mortal mind and He is directing the paths of the remaining members and the member who resigned. I am so grateful for your daily messages which help and heal.

  2. Thanks for this post! My friend is moving away today, and I’ve been working to express that calm strength as I’ve helped her, both reminding her throughout the process that it’s God’s plan, our job is to trust that and witness it, and with the many last minute details. I love the image of being the calm in the midst of the storm. I am grateful to be able to share God’s love and strength with my friend!

  3. This helps me get and stay calm and spread calm: (deeply breathing in the nose as if enjoying perfume) “God is in control, blessing all.“ (slowly breathing out like blowing bubbles) “Nothing is real but infinite God, good.“ (deep belly breathing in) “ We’re all in the kingdom of heaven with the kingdom of heaven within us”. (Slowly breathing out) “Perfect Love casts out fear.”

Galatians 5:22. the fruit(A) of the Spirit is love,(B) joy, peace,(C) patient trust in God with courageous forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, graciously generous gentleness, and self-control.(D) Against such things there is no law.(E)
Increasing and improving expression of one Christly quality or gift of the Spirit helps with the increased quality and quantity of the expression of the other spiritual ideas, and each of these increases or improves the reliability of the others.

  4. Throughout the recent times, in which material life has seemed crazier and more confusing and tumultuous than ever, I turned more and more deeply into God’s arms. I was grateful to see there was no where else to go.

The past few days I’ve been feeling like I lost a lot of my peace and error was seeming more real and I’ve been having despairing thoughts. I know that I can’t actually lose my Peace, because God supplies it continuously. The inner calm, the bliss of Being are permanent facts for all of us. As I keep turning back to Him, I hope to see the lies of error dissolve into their native nothingness.

Thank you Anon for Hymn 118, very comforting. Blessings and Love to everyone on SpiritView today, thank you all.

  5. When there is a feeling of tension/conflict with my young adult children, I dwell on the phrase – O gentle presence…peace….and joy….and power!!! I “sink” into the magnitude of that simple phrase MBE wrote and gather myself into the calm before attempting to address the conflict.

  6. This came immediately to thought upon drinking in this powerful peace post.
“Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony. The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace. Thus the dawn of ideas goes on, forming each successive stage of progress.”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 506:10)

Thanks everyone for the contributions…”the dawn of ideas goes on…” 🙂

  7. Thank you Evan and you Christine for the link to the Sentinel with the article “Poise Precludes Pressure”. I will be sure to send this SpiritView to my daughter whose name is Christine. The word “equanimity” appeared in the article and I looked up the meaning. We all need to dive deeper for this.

  8. Thank you everyone for these wonderful contributions. I have one to add: Page 355 from S & H: “ Let discord of every name and nature be heard no more, and let the harmonious and true sense of Life and being take possession of human consciousness.“

  9. One of my favorite statements from Science and Health is “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,– is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal.” page 306
Dearest Rose,–you are enveloped in divine Love. Nothing has the power to disturb your peace, your equanimity, or your innate harmony as Love’s perfect expression.
