God can do it. Do you believe?

There’s a story in the New Testament about a father who brings his child to the disciples for healing of an evil spirit, which moderns often interpret to be an aggressive form of epilepsy, and the disciples fail to heal the boy. The father turns to Jesus for help, and the following conversation was recorded by Mark.

“How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied, “Since he was a little boy. The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” Mark 9:21-23, NLT.

I love Jesus’ reply, “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus had no doubt that the boy could be healed.

Have you ever turned to God for help and doubted that help would come? If Jesus Christ were standing in front of you now, and you could ask for help, would you have faith that he could heal you?

The truth is, Christ is before you now. Christ is the power and presence of God, which is omnipresent. You can’t escape it. God is what powers you, enlivens you, makes, forms and creates you. You and God are one!

We doubt when we think we are material and help comes to us materially or through a human source. Anytime we believe that the human or mortal mind is involved, we are liable to doubt because we know from experience that the human and mortal are not reliable. But when we truly turn to infinite Mind, the Mind of God to whom all things are possible, doubt is gone. What cannot God do? As Jesus reminded this father, and then proceeded to heal the boy.

“The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, — a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.” Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 1.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible story and for reminding me how close God is! I admit I sometimes think things in my life are just too BIG (or have been going on too long!) to ever really be healed. Today’s SpiritView knocks that tired old thinking out of the park! I am left refreshed and renewed to think openly about the amazing relationship we each have with God! So exciting! Thank you Evan! Best wishes to you and yours!

  2. I love the reminder that the Christ is here, now, in 2017 to heal with the same potency and confidence as Jesus expressed in his healing work. Super SV! Thank you, Evan. Every day you are here with something to wake us up to infinite possibilities!

Thank you for this precious reminder that the Christ is always with us. This has made my morning. God bless you!

  4. Thank you Evan. This one has to go into your “top ten” list with the “hundreds” of other blog postings you’ve done that are also in that list! 🙂

When reading this it occurred to me that Jesus understood that God “has already done it” and therefore when Jesus was asked “if you can?” he thought that was a ridiculous question because he already saw the father’s son as the perfectly healthy idea of God. By that I mean that Jesus understood that any discord presented to him by others was just an illusion…their illusion…and Jesus didn’t accept that as his reality. Jesus understood that God holds His creation in perfect harmony. God does not let any aspect of His creation get “out of control” and then step in to restore harmony as a result of Jesus or anyone else imploring Him to do so. So I think one step to destroying doubt is realizing harmony is already established. And by knowing that, Jesus could instantly dispel the illusion of discord…and we can too!

The idea that God “has already done it” also keeps us from categorizing problems as “more difficult” or “less difficult” to resolve. Again, nothing has to “change” to “restore” harmony. Harmony is already here, now, to be realized instantly. By understanding how much God loves us, we can discern that God would never allow us for an instant to experience any discord whatsoever. That understanding allows us to cherish the spiritual truth, the perfect idea, in our consciousness. That understanding allows us take joy that this perfect idea is true substance and thereby allow us to realize that what the material senses may tell us to the contrary can be safely ignored because again what the material senses may be reporting is just an illusion. As we understandingly hold to the truth irrespective of what material sense might be arguing, we will find those material senses will eventually be silenced and we will fully experience the harmony that has already been at hand. Experience that perfect idea that we’ve been knowing as true substance all along.

    1. Thank you! – Evan for this thought starter and Brian for the embellishment. It helped me realize the staggering level of understanding faith that Jesus was manifesting as the Christ in each of us. God made me a giant, not a tiny mite! What of “anything” did not begin in substance, as an idea? What idea is not omnipresent? What in “anything” has a separate power of its own? I really need to remember to bless “everything and anything” constantly – not once in a while: to invoke good upon; to call forth the action of God into visibility – and know that the same power is in me now that Jesus demonstrated.

A powerful mindset to hold this weekend!
