Happiness and congruency

Happiness is when what you think,
what you say,
and what you do are in harmony.

~ Gandhi

Congruency is what came to mind when I read this quote. Certainly, when our thoughts, words and actions are all in congruence, that speaks volumes for where we are in life. We’re not hiding something. We’re not thinking one thing and doing another. We’re not dishonest with ourselves and with others. We are true, straightforward, innocent in many ways, and we are what we say we are. That is a formula for satisfying joy.
On the other hand, its not a perfect formula for happiness because the spirit of the inspiration could be perverted to the uses of evil. For instance, it could imply free license to be hateful, spew hatred and live hatred. That would be an evil type of congruence, and no source of true happiness.
So, I find salvation in Mary Baker Eddy’s definition of happiness from Science and Health:
Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it.”
When we think, speak and act according to the ways of Truth and Love, that’s a guaranteed route to deeply anchored happiness.

  1. And I would add that spiritual happiness requires all creaturekind to share it. To limit unselfishness to just one species is something limitless, universal, impartial Love would NEVER sanction! 🙂
