Hold perpetually to the right idea

February 8, 2024 | 17 comments

Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.

~ Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 496

Perpetually. That means forever. Nonstop. Don’t quit. Don’t lapse. Stick to it. Adhere without fail. Think about the spiritual idea and keep thinking about it, without end.

Perpetual attention to Christ, the spiritual idea of God, enables healing to occur—with scientific certainty.

  1. Thanks Coach Evan! We can all use this encouragement and confidence in our daily practice of listening to God’s commandments and practicing true love for ourselves and our fellowman.

  2. When a so-called material sense is lost, and Truth restores that lost sense, — on the basis that all consciousness is Mind and eternal, — the former position, that sense is organic and material, is proven erroneous.

The feasibility and immobility of Christian Science unveil the true idea, — namely, that earth’s discords have not the reality of Mind in the Science of being; and this idea — dematerializing and spiritualizing mortals — turns like the needle to the pole all hope and faith to God, based as it is on His omnipotence and omnipresence.

Eternal harmony, perpetuity, and perfection, constitute the phenomena of being, governed by the immutable and eternal laws of God; whereas matter and human will, intellect, desire, and fear, are not the creators, controllers, nor destroyers of life or its harmonies. Man has an immortal Soul, a divine Principle, and an eternal being. Man has perpetual individuality; and God’s laws, and their intelligent and harmonious action, constitute his individuality in the Science of Soul.

    1. Thank you again, J–
For a wonderful article with insights, explanations and examples I need. The emphasis on “top down” prayer is immensely useful, a reminder to diligently resist the need to review the claim and honor the material lie. It is a powerful “keeper,” as are others in the same issue!

    2. Thank you J for sharing this. I am truly blessed by the truth contained herein! This ministered to me at a perfect time!

  3. Thank you for the great “coach”ing, Evan .. (Virginia – love that idea!) LOL =Lots of Love here.
The message and photo brings to mind, Mrs. Eddy’s sweet hymn #207 ..
“O gentle presence, peace and joy and power ..
Keep Thou my child on upward wing [today and] tonight…
‘Lo, I am with you alway’, watch and pray”….
Like a dear cared for child, a daughter or son of God, we are all comforted and given
TlC -tender loving care a, feeling from being low again or weakly , or like a shadow
from a large tree outside the window appearing, through the glass, to be a scary monster.
We are loved, protected, guarded by and given comfort by a warm blanket of gentle
forever presence of God, snug in the peaceful contentment of our daily journey with Truth.

    1. Angel I love your characterization of our relationship with God as….” loved, protected, guarded by and given comfort by a warm blanket of gentle forever presence of God, snug in the peaceful contentment….”
Yes a warm blanket of God’s love, how true and how wonderful to contemplate.

Evan I appreciated the word “perpetually.” God is perpetual, eternal, unceasing good. And as a reflection of God, divine Mind, I can’t help but have that natural, perpetual consciousness of good. It certainly seems very challenging at times and may feel like a struggle to keep it going, but it’s only hard if we make the mistake of trying to use human will to force ourselves to “think right.” I suspect it should be the most natural and unforced thing to express our true being, true nature, the One Mind.

  4. Thank you Evan! And I also am very aware how important that word “perpetual” is. Yes, it means, always listen to the Christ-Ideas and follow Christ in every deed and instance. The teacher in Berlin with whom I took my CS class decades ago reproved us at the end of the 14 days learning, that we never shall forget the Christ. And I am very very grateful, dear Evan, that you always brings us the wonderful Christ to mind! Also the weekly Bible Lesson has many accounts of healing through Christ Jesus. That is very helpful and very comforting, demonstrating that healing of all ailments are possible through Christ, Truth!
