Humans have lots in common

John Yemma reported in the Christian Science Monitor, “In 2000, when they released a rough draft of the human genome, biologists Francis Collins and Craig Venter pointed out that human beings are 99.9 percent identical genetically” (CSM, Sept. 20, 2010).

I was fascinated by the 99.9 percent similarity we all have in common.

People around the world sure don’t treat each other that way. Castes, class, race, prejudice, bigotry, ethnic differences, and more, are excuses by millions to think of themselves as either superior or inferior, and sometimes grossly so, to their fellow humans. And how often do we let something small, like skin color, become a terribly divisive monstrous issue! But the differences amount only to .1 percent, from a geneticist’s point of view.

Hmmm…much to ponder here.

The key to understanding our commonality, though, will never be found in genes. We are spiritual creatures with a common spiritual brotherhood to appreciate and acknowledge.

From a spiritual point of view, we all have incredibly unique and special individualities. But one individual expression is no less or more substantial than another. They all reflect one common Father-Mother God.

Maybe the genetic evaluation of 99.9 percent in common is a hint of this truth….

  1. A year ago I purchased the DVD of a seminar broadcast on PBS. It featured Dr. Wayne Dyer and his presentation is called, “Excuses Begone!” Within this talk he specifically states that conventional medical wisdom is now acknowledging that genes can be nullified. That the belief that they are locks and permanent limitations imposed on our individualities is no longer true. We do not have to accept gene-based limitations any longer. To a Christian Scientist, this is not news. But to the many non-scientists out there, this is a remarkable finding and should and does bring hope and a sense of relief to those bound by gene-based limitations. Dr. Dyer is moving in the right direction. He affirms man’s innate divinity and spirituality. He has not yet diven God the entire glory yet, but he is moving in that direction. As for the medical community at large, this movement of their thought away from gene-based limitations is remarkable and wonderful evidence of mortal mind moving into the Light. As to cherishing our commonality, since we all are children of God, creations of God, we all share in a truly divine background. We all need to start here and stay here in our view of one another. Thank you Evan for reminding us of even our ‘human’ sense of oneness. Have a great day….Leah Eselgroth

  2. Very helpful, Evan!

As Truth, Christ, dawns upon human thought,
amazing perspectives come to light. It is quite
natural, then, to see “physical scientists”
come to more accurate conclusions about man. However, as Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (paraphrased) “there is an infinite distance between Truth and error.” Therefore, DNA, genomes and such, can
never get us to absolute spiritual truth. Helpful, perhaps, but we need to be clear about this, huh!

There are many thinkers “out there” such as Mr. Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, Marianne Williamson, and their many followers, who are getting pretty good glimpses of Reality. It is definitely happening!!
