Let God define you, not material belief

As a child of God, you are not defined by what you appear to experience materially, but by what you are designed to be spiritually.

  1. Thank you Evan.
Through application of the teachings of Christian Science iI am learning this fact. and feeling true freedom.

  2. Evan, Thank you!!! Have never felt God’s love for me. Seem to consistently be struggling for it, and have a deep yearning to KNOW this love. I think this thought today may be an ” entry point” for me. I’m using my human experiences and appearances as a yard stick to see if I qualify and of course I consistently don’t. From all that I’ve read in Science the actual experience of it is a “Life Changer” and I yearn for it. I heard a person once say that once you feel God’s Love for you you will never be the same again. Sunshine Butterfly Kisses to you.

  3. Thank you Evan! There has been a lot of discussion recently on this blog about the “human” and how that relates to the “mortal” and “divine”. I came across the following article from the Sept, 2011, Christian Science Journal that discusses these topics that I’d like to share with everyone. Additionally this article gives a Santa Claus analogy that ties in with your message today about not allowing what may appear materially to define us…and how knowing the truth allows us to replace this “appearance” with what is true about us and therefore experience that truth tangibly in our lives. Judy Wolff, the author of this article, provides examples of healings that demonstrate how it is possible to experience our “spiritual design” humanly.

      We can DO this!
That is: God’s all-powerful love is breaking up material beliefs!!

      There IS Hope!!

      Whew.

      :-)))

  4. Thank you,Brian, for the link to that beautiful interview with Judy Wolff. It is worthy of deep reading, more than one! Not an easy subject to digest, but so important to understand.

  5. So apropros Evan, so thank you very much. As a youth and much afterward, I too, as Charla now related, I longed for that feeling and knowing my true selfhood. The comments of mortal mind never measured up to the truth about Love’s idea. A certain couple nicknamed me “Sunshine” which was expressing their love for the qualities I emanated. After many years of being out of touch with each other the couple saw me and called loudly “Sunshine”. That became a blessing to me. It is very special to me over many, many decades later. The negatives were never true.
Two + two can never be anything other than four. “Sunshine” is truly the spiritual idea of Love and Truth with spiritual witness.

  6. I think to some degree, we have all felt what you described, Charla, and we all yearn to get and share that feeling of love. And Sunshine, what a wonderful expression that couple saw in you! I remember going to visit a friend in a nursing home for several years before she passed on and often when I would come, she would greet me with the biggest smile and say, “You are my sunshine!”. It was a wonderful feeling and when I used to to take her for rides and away from that environment for just a short time, she loved the time spent. This is sort of the feeling we strive for, I think, when we try to turn away from the matter view and feel the sunshine of the Spirit view! Thank you, as always, Evan, for letting us share our thoughts and be so blessed by them on your wonderful site here. Have a sunny day everyone!

  7. Thank You, Evan! Yes, we exist by Divine Design! And Thanks, Brian, for that Oh, So Helpful Article by Judy Wolff! Extremely helpful re. understanding the difference between the mortal, the human and the divine! No matter what we hear or see happening on the U. S. Political Scene, I am holding to this: “Let Truth uncover and destroy error in God’s own way and let human justice pattern the divine.” (Somewhere in Science and Health.)

  8. Thanks Evan:

After reading my daily lesson in the morning, I go to your blog for the wonderful thoughts for us. What a great way to start my day!

  9. Thank you Evan. Your topics are always so timely and relevant for me. Brian, thank you for the link to this wonderful article – also timely for me. Blessings to everyone. Enjoy this beautiful day from God.

  10. I remember the moment the thought came to me that if one removed/saw life without any human theories included, which would be free of any physics theories, there could only be Spirit/LOVE. My human experience forever changed for the better to “all-harmonious.”
“Oh, I thought; that’s why Life, God is Love. ” And, so it’s been ever since.

    1. Ginny this is so wonderfully and succinctly stated…….

Makes me think if I had only had more time…
I could have written even fewer words……

  11. Charia…Bless your heart….To imagine one beautiful child of our divine mother and father doesn’t quite feel or experience their Love is sad and unacceptable…
If I may, i would like to share some of my experience in hopes you may garner something of it for yourself….
We are all unique as individual reflections of our Divine Parents….I’m intentionally using this term ‘Parents’ because the word God, was for me, a rather daunting word and when thought of as my parents so much easier to relate to their Love and more…..i also discovered a lot of residual beliefs about God that were rather unpleasant , even fearful due to being brought up with a earthly father who was a Priest…..so a judgmental God, one who can give love or take it away…one who will punish me for my bad human behavior…one who would only listen to and occasionally answer my prayers and only if He found me worthy..and bowing before him as such….Now of course this is all very unbecoming of any parent, Divine or otherwise and Christian Science completely corrects this erroneous thinking……..
Lastly, where , when and how can we experience Divine Love…this is different for each one of us so i can only speak from my own experience…..i too, wanted to experience and know i am Loved….so using passages in Science and Health and New Testament which instruct us to be still….be in private surroundings…..go within….so with this in mind and in stillness watch your thoughts without changing them….this quiets the mind and makes you the observer….allow your body to deeply relax while your mind is active doing this……….you will soon find yourself in the most wonderful space of quiet peace….now talk to you Father, your Mother..in prayer or gratitude….or bring into this mental place a thought from your reading and study that you want elucidation on so that you may understand the idea more deeply….you will receive while in this state for you have made yourself receptive to what is call “The Still, Small Voice” of guidance and Love….
When you realize you are now having a dialog with your Parents….. and you experience Their responses your heart will be so fill with Love and gratitude you may literally want to go shout it out to the street from your window……Tears of Joy are present for you know God has communicated with you and it is always on the wings of Love you experience this….
One may find themselves wanting to return again and again to this state of private contemplation…if one does, this experience becomes instructive, therefore increasingly valuable in ones journey…
    With Love to you Charia……

    1. Thank you Maximo. That was so helpful to me. As one who was brought up in “the Bible belt” of the south, I’ve had a difficult time shaking the idea of guilt and condemnation, even though I never consciously subscribed to those beliefs. As I’ve dealt with health issues the past few years, there is often the idea associated with it that I am being punished for my sins and mistakes and that unless I can become a perfect human that I will never be rid of the torment. Your way of expressing our “Parents” love for us is very freeing. Bless you!

  12. Yet again such a wonderful start to the day with ideas of divine love, spiritual connectedness as a reality we all can experience directly through divine science. Brian thank you for the link, I will share this with my family: Maximo thank you for your expressive comment; the comments that are hear are all butterfly kisses of love warming my spirit under this blanket of snow outside my door. I’ve enjoyed everyone. And Oh, thank you Evan for getting us started in this direction. :-))

  13. Brian I can’t thank you enough for the link to such an inspiring article. I’ll read it and study it again and and again. All of the comments have been helpful. Sunshine – what a beautiful name! My husband used to sing to me “You are the sunshine of my life.”

  14. Evan thank you for your blog statement. Really helped today. Brian the links you give us to various articles are really appreciated. You are all the Sunshine on my spiritual path.

  15. Thanks so much Evan for todays uplifting SV – it brings us away from Materiality. It makes us think about our true being as wholy spiritual.
