Look beyond the form to the idea

October 31, 2019 | 24 comments

One of the huge mental freedoms Christian Science brings to its student, is the ability to look beyond a material form to the spiritual idea it represents. Once you understand what the spiritual idea is, there is no limit to where you can go and what you can do with that idea, for there are no limits in Mind!

In this video, I share some insights about resolving things into thoughts that I gained from visiting the Hammer Museum in Haines, Alaska. Did you know such a place existed! This one little building is filled with metaphysical lessons. It was filmed during our trip to Alaska last September.

  1. Thanks Evan – good thoughts to start the day. Look forward to more insights and thoughts on spiritual healing.

  2. Just love this…such a clear explanation of resolving things into thoughts. I love the idea of the idea appropriate for our needs at the moment. No outlining of how that supply of ideas takes form either, just trusting God who loves every single one of us, to meet the need in a perfect way. Thank you, Evan!

  3. Much gratitude, Evan, for sharing your fun adventures and turning them into great learning experiences for us. Appreciate so much the good work you do. Thank you!!

  4. This is fantastic, Evan. Who knew you could get such inspiration for a hammer museum! Thank you so much for SpiritView. I wouldn’t miss a single post.

  5. Thank you Evan for doing such a great job of illustrating the idea of “looking beyond the form to the idea.” About a year ago I realized the story depicted in John 21:1-14 illustrates how Jesus demonstrated this same concept. One commentary I read on this story indicated that during Jesus ministry, the disciples and Jesus were probably supplied by the charity of Jesus’ followers that supported Jesus’ mission. After Jesus crucifixion the disciples may have been struggling with a lack of supply because they were no longer receiving the generosity of Jesus’ followers. So they went back to their prior occupation of fishing and caught nothing. But when Jesus appeared, his thorough understanding that God’s ideas are always supplied with whatever they need broke the mesmerism of lack the disciples were experiencing. Once the disciples obeyed the directive to move their thinking to the “right side” (an understanding of God and His perfectly supplied ideas), that truth first manifested itself in the form of a huge catch of fish, proving forever that man can never fail to successfully achieve whatever good task he is led to achieve. Then after fishing all night the other belief of lack the disciples were probably experiencing was hunger. But again, Jesus perfect understanding of supply was manifested in the form of fish cooking over coals and bread. The right ideas of God can always be manifested in our experience in just the right “form” to meet our needs.

  6. Love this Evan – empowering! And, you can apply it in so many ways. Just like there are thousands of hammers, there are 7 billion plus people on the Earth. And, who knows how many if you take into account all life forms. How could one feel lack? Life is everywhere! And, this expression of Life is like a feast for us. Once we identify who we are and what we want, there it is to meet every need – education, job, relationship, hobby. The solutions/ideas are already out there. The hardest part can be getting on track with identifying who we are and what we want. And, learning to listen for the answers and be open to them (see them). The freedom when you understand this is amazing! Wonderful vlog!

  7. Love your teaching very much, to see a useful idea in the things. On Wednesday evening when I drove our japanese organist home, I told her that in my 30ies when I was Sundayschool teacher, I told my pupils that the table is not matter, but an idea which God gave to the carpenter to shape it and create it to a useful table. So Everything useful is in reality an idea from God. Our organist was very happy with that understanding, as she told me. She is not a Christian Scientist, but meanwhile understands a lot of our wonderful Science.
Am grateful for all your inspired comments, so helpful!
Thank you very much Evan, for your teaching the Truth here – it is so comforting and healing !

  8. Another gem of a SV! Thank you so much Evan. I will never hear the song “If I Had a Hammer” in the same way again!

  9. “Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own universe of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind. The material and mortal body or mind is not the man.”
    S&H 209:5

“In Thy light shall we see light.”
    Ps. 36:9

  10. What a wonderful post. All those hammers, each one a unique solution to a problem. As you say, the solutions are infinite. I am so grateful for your posts. Thank you

  11. this reminds me of a story i read about a dad who taught his son through the history of the horse and buggy business. if they had been in the “transportation” business they would still be in business today. but bc they held onto their identity as being in the horse and buggy industry they became out of fashion…..same with kodak or maybe other film companies….the ones who evolve with the spiritual idea of their purpose can continue and be relevant and still worthy…..

  12. This has been put in such a practical, fun way. To open up to the infinite possibilities without outlining how the “need” will be answered in a specific material form.

I recall when I was young, married, with not much money and I badly needed new jeans. We just couldn’t swing it financially for a few months. I accepted that for some reason. I was just getting back into Christian Science.

Then one day my sister gave me some clothes she couldn’t fit into any more. I was delighted that there were two pairs of jeans that fit me perfectly.

I didn’t realize it until a week or so later that my prayer had been answered. I was still wondering where the money was going to come from, even though I didn’t need jeans anymore!

Thanks Evan. Also Brian and Tricia for their comments.
