Preparation for a good night’s rest

October 20, 2023 | 45 comments

Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness. Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort.

~ Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellany, p. 210

  1. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness. Yess Evan sir but only spiritual sense recognises it and becomes sometimes difficult to be with Spirit all time in this materialistic world.

    1. Sweet Monica you are right that it isn’t easy but you know I have had times when it became easy because of the discipline I was able to use. Just to keep focusing on what is good no matter what material evidence. Mind you I’ve also been caught up in the material world and found it feeling almost impossible, but God has helped me keep my focus on spiritual truths even if I can’t feel them. And you know eventually I have seen the change in the material world as well. God is gracious and leads the way. xx

      1. Dear Dinah, thank you very much for your loving reply to Monica!
It`s the way God does with us all; He is gracious and leads the way, as He loves us without measure!!!xx

      2. Dear Dinah, how beautifully and tender
You answered Monica. It’s true sometimes
For a brief moment all the doubts seem to take over and my belief in divine power seems
Like a dream and not real..
But what a delightful it is when that strong spiritual and natural feeling is back again and
        All tasks unfold without complaints..
Thanks Evan ! Thanks God , and all at SpiritView for that real Love that takes us each day for a new adventure, big or small ,that doesn’t matter…

        1. Am happy for you, Patrick. I know what you mean. It was pouring rain
and my little dog started barking at something. Mortal mind again
can sure seem very real sometimes. I appreciate the thoughts here.

      4. Sorry to thank you Dinah a bit late but grateful for your wonderful answer —DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE— nothing else , no matter what material evidence , only discipline to serve Spirit no matter -a solution to my every question. I need persistence and consistence in efforts.

  2. What a great mental exercise!

Mrs. Eddy knew full well that all is mental and that that is where the work begins.

We must constantly be about our Fathers business.

We must take up the spiritual work that enables us to see the differance between Truth and erring suggestions.

  3. I think especially at this time as I think of people in Israel hostages and those in Ukraine and wherever evil presents self to fill our hearts with love and goodness and know that God does not leave its creation for a moment This takes discipline but I have seen many times that there is no border for thought.

    1. Thank you Nadine. for sharing your strong answer to
all fears! We can all take heart and be strong with God
on behalf of EVERYONE, IN EVERY NATION INCLUDING ALL NATIONS–no matter what they think they should be doing! GOD, GOOD ALONE IS THE ONE MIND THE ONLY MIND for me and mind and THANKS MUCH EVAN for providing this encouraging space for us to share and to learn and be encouraged!!!.

  4. This is so wonderful, thank you, one of my favourite passages.

It is so important that we are always, always, working – Mrs Eddy’s direct instruction was to never be off guard – and what a privilege it is to be able to work towards obeying that direction.

As Linda says we must constantly be about our Father’s business. And that means seeing through all claims of error.

  5. God is encompassing all Hhis/Her children . Thank you for that beautiful and uplifting passage from Miscellany Evan.

  6. to focus on working we may be emphasizing that which we are working against. I prefer to YIELD to life truth and love

    1. I agree with you Marge, the idea of yielding and surrendering to the all-power of Truth and Love is comforting and takes away the burdening feeling of working and struggling and striving against a perceived so-called enemy. That can seem to give reality to error as a large force that has power.

Though we do need to watch thought always. Mrs. Eddy said about enemies, “Even in belief you have but one…and this one enemy is yourself — your erroneous belief that you have enemies; that evil is real; that aught but good exists in Science.” (Misc Writings p. 10)

          1. Yes Cheryl, your second link does also work on my PC, thank you very much indeed for it!

  7. This statement met my exact need this morning – I offer it for your consideration: “To the burdened and weary, Jesus saith ‘come into me!’ O glorious hope! There remaineth a rest for the righteous, a rest in Christ, a peace in Love. The thought of it stills all complaint; the heaving surf of life’s troubled sea foams itself away, and underneath is a deep-settled calm.” MBE ‘02, 19:15.

  8. Sometimes it can seem tough to fill thought with vague concepts. MBE says “song, sermon or Science” can provide “crumbs of comfort” as tangible representatives of good. “All nature teaches God’s love to man.” (Page 326), but only as a stimulus to spiritual sense; the rest of the sentence urges us to abandon the material. I use cats, dogs, birds in feeders, leaves, sky, trees and music as starters, stimuli, for the gratitude that is constant prayer. (A tree is being planted in my yard today, with all that it evokes, implies and triggers.) Matter is not the point– MBE calls flowers “hieroglyphs of Deity.” Remember the old children’s book from the Publishing Society, “Filled up Full”?

  9. Hymn #263 from the CS hymnal opened randomly this morning and the words, “Only God
can bring us gladness, Only God can give us peace” shone forth.
A little while ago, I was awakened in the middle of the night by what I thought was a
disturbing sound outside the window. Before realizing it was probably just a dream shadow,
it was a bit frightening at first, as some rather questionable (to human mind’s perspective)
characters have recently moved into the neighborhood. Holding thought to God’s presence
    restored thinking to peacefulness again.
Also, when in college… I worked in a factory during the summer to help pay the tuition. I would
often wake during the night, not knowing for “real” if I were dreaming or still at work, because
the work was so repetitive in nature. It is like the mortal mind of belief that tries to fool us into
thinking it is real when it is not.

  10. Carolyn G- Thank you for reminding me of this beautiful quote from Mary Baker Eddy. So comforting.

  11. as I watched Bach being played in Notra Dam last night. What an army of beautiful sound and illumination of love, the almost breathless wonder of unity, Voices were surfing over clouds.. It seemed, thinking of the 5 senses .. not being real, I thought how sad Gods missing this,…
    (there is no sadness) MBE
then again she knows Her angels… making it all so easy.
thank you, softly gently, into the day with
    tender friends

  12. Thank you Evan for your wonderful and inspiring words. They lift me up every morning. God bless you and all of us.

    1. J, thank you for the Night Prayer by Anne Holway Higgins. What a wonderful prayer before closing our eyes for the night. And thank you for the article by Joni Overton-Jung. I shared an article under Marge Thornton’s comment, and wouldn’t you know? Both articles had the same quotation from The First Church of Christ Scientist, and Miscellany (p. 121). We are of one Mind.

      1. Hi Cheryl, you are so welcome. And thank you so much for posting the article on yielding. I love that both include the same quotation. 🙂

  13. Evan thanks for the great quote from Mrs. Eddy on the power of staying filled up with good thoughts of Truth. These days we have charging stations for electric cars to keep their power levels high. Prayerful, uplifted thinking and study is like our spiritual charging station to keep our well of Truth filled up so we can bless others and experience the joy and goodness God provides for us.

The final sentence of that paragraph in Miscellany reads, “And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited.” Love the inclusiveness of that!

  14. Mrs. Eddy says, on page 61 of Retrospection & Introdpection starting on line 3, “…but if you fall asleep, actually conscious of the truth of Christuan Science, —
namely, that man’s harmony is no more yo be invaded than the rhythm of the universe, — you cannot awake in fear or suffering of any sort.”

  15. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
How comforting this verse has become on so many occasions.
Also, when considering the enormity of our spiritual protection and eternal invulnerability
    1st John 4 v19
‘We love because He first Loved us.’
Thank you Evan for this today…and I will look forward to reading the articles over the weekend which so many of you provide links for. Happy God filled thoughts all❣️

  16. Thank you so much for these kind words of encouragement, BarbaraUK (and Carolyn G). This
message is a God-send. Your quote”Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and
I will give you rest” are the exact words so much needed in the world today of hardworking
folks, both “physically” and mentally, trying to stay above the seeming turmoil in the world today – with seeming so much evil in charge, with big this and big that – fill in the blanks, and unfortunately can’t even write freely these days or mention what seems so wrong.
So many Seeming lies do appear to be a very heavy burden… not to mention the oppression of those who have worked so hard all their lives, seemingly struggling, the homeless, living off of
what some probably couldn’t even fathom, some not getting a break, because always working
-but it is the Simple things that really matter and sometimes doing without, helps to bring about those simple things more clearly – to appreciate God more.
Such as – looking out at the beautiful colors of changing leaves, or peacefulness of sweet dogs
so loving, unconditionally, cozy home, gratitude for strength and energy through God to be able
to accomplish all of the chores that need doing, the Knowledge of what is Really True, the
“emotional” support and Divine Love like shared here – it helps to keep Hope going, under sometimes seemingly very trying circumstances in the world today.
I Thank God, literally, for this website and for the technology, power, freedom of religion which
we must keep a constant vigil because even that is under assault in today’s world of wanting dominance of the material.
Sometimes maybe feeling like just a little nobody in the grand scheme of things, we all need to realize how very important we really are as children of God and how important our prayers are to each other and for the entire world.

    1. Hi Carol
So glad you found comfort in my small contribution this weekend. Sometimes reading other people’s ideas are just the nudge we need to look more deeply into the truth of our divine reality.
What a bonus Spirit View is! Picking us up where needed and encouraging us to focus spiritually , not materially….
So grateful to you Evan and everyone here today and everyday.❣️

  17. Thanks a lot Evan for sharing this uplifted passage which we should make a part of our daily life. Thanks also to all other contributors who shared a lot of inspiring ideas.

  18. This was a wonderful lecture and such a ray of sunshine! Loved the thought of being Still and know that… God Is, as the lecturer so kindly declared… where the Christ idea, the Oneness of God comes to us… . So lovely.

  19. Thank you dear “J” for that article rich with helpful quotes by Christ Jesus and MBEddy. I dived mentally into this ocean of wonderfully comforting spiritual truths, that God, divine Love is the source of real peace. Mrs. Eddy said once: “Go to God, rest in Love, the infinite, allmighty Love, ready, waiting to comfort you, and you will find peace.” Also this quote by Christ Jesus is contained in this article: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubles, neither let it be afraid.”
This article is very helpful and very worth reading.

And thanks for Anne Higgin’s Poem. Annie is a Facebook friend and was happy when I told her that you posted her lovely night prayer. She also immediately subscribed to SpiritView after I explained her how to receive daily this blessing SpiritView Blog in her inbox.

Thank you very much, dear Evan for your loved SpiritView Blog, and thank you all for your lively and inspiring comments.
Am very happy, so as many others who do not comment, to get every Morning these blessing and healing spiritual views!♡

  20. Oh “J” I was relating to the article “Peace of Mind – even in chaotic times ” by Joni Overton-Jung.

I once watched Alexandre Fisher’s lecture you mention up here, on YouTube. But it’s worth listening to it again. Thanks “J” for always lovingly giving us relevant and helpful articles!♡
