Prevent sickness with watchfulness

One of the great benefits of practicing Christian Science is that it teaches one how to prevent disease from happening before it has a chance to form in one’s outward experience.
All human experience incubates in human consciousness. The outward effect may happen quickly or slowly depending upon what belief allows. But nonetheless, the inner precedes the outer. So, the alert metaphysician learns to watch thought.
If one is in the habit of watching their body, instead of their thought, they will likely be too late. By the time they see an effect on the body they will have missed their opportunity to prevent the trouble in the first place.  Nix the lie in consciousness upon inception, and there will be no outward symptom.
Three days before I left for Australia, I took a couple of minutes to lounge in a chair after a busy day. I let my thought “lounge” too, and within a few minutes I started to feel the distant hints of nausea and sickness, sort of like the flu coming on.
I immediately caught it. Like I say, it seemed very distant, but started to show up in my body a little bit. But I didn’t ignore it!
The first thought that came to me was, “Oh yes, just what mortal mind wants to do, get me sick so I can’t board a plane in perfect health for Australia in three days to share Christian Science freely and abundantly on that continent.”
I gave myself Christian Science treatment.
I knew that mortal mind had no power over my health. I knew that mortal mind could not plot against me. I knew that mortal mind was not a mind, and therefore had no presence, no influence, and no effect.  It was a zero, and zero plus Evan equals unchanged Evan—God’s perfect healthy man at all times, under all circumstances.
Honestly, I got so lost in the treatment I forgot all about praying for myself until the next morning when I remembered what had happened. And I was in perfect health. Those symptoms had vanished entirely.
So pay attention to what you think.  When you take quick spiritual action against what feel like remote aggressive evil suggestions, you are acting wisely, and can decisively prevent unwanted trouble further down the road.
It is better to prevent disease from forming in mortal mind
afterwards to appear on the body; but to do this requires attention.”

  1. Now that is good math! Thanks, Evan!

I remember being told that the best definition of error – the cause of disease – is written on page 500 of Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health. It is a blank page. Nothing. However, I found another equally great definition in the French translation of Science and Health on page 500. Actually there is no page 500. It skips from 499 to 501 because of the unique design of the book. Like an error of sickness, its NOWHERE. 🙂

  2. Evan, that isn’t a photo of you lounging in that chair, pretending to look sick, is it? 🙂

Thanks for the great example of how to nix diseased thoughts before they have a chance to “spread” to the body.

And thanks for the reminder about page 500. The non-page in the French translation is just as apt. Merci beaucoup, Michelle.

And, of yes, that’s great CS math.

  3. “All human experience incubates in human consciousness.” Not some, but ALL you say. That’s a startling statement, surely caught my attention. That’s of course why government health care will never make us healthier…treating matter will never make us healthier. Health is consciousness as Mrs. Eddy states. And this statement you wrote today gave me such hope when I read it, Evan. Each of us has the ability (God-derived) to protect and defend individual consciousness. Herein lies health. LOVE this idea. Michelle, love your blogs as well, love your idea of prayer MOJO…that sweet spot where the human consciousness yields to the Divine. Thank you both for your contributions to world thought!

  4. Oh; thanks for this Evan! I know to treat thought when the body has an issue. But I hadn’t thought of watching thought always, so the body never has an opportunity to express anything but Love. What a great lesson with which to start out my day!
