Rest your faith in the goodness of God

November 3, 2020 | 24 comments

Fear can keep us up all night long, but faith makes one fine pillow.

~ Philip Gulley

Fear is faith in evil. Peaceful rest is faith in good.

If you’re having a hard time resting, move your faith from evil to good, and enjoy the peaceful thoughts that come. They make a “mighty fine pillow” to rest your thought and head upon.

  1. Mrs. Eddy speaks about having faith that all things are possible to God. Well, a good night’s sleep could certainly be one of those good things.
I love the word faith because to me it means trust in the goodness of life.. trust that the outcome of any circumstance, situation or effort can be good..
Today I will trust the outcome of all things to be good and will rest well tonight..

  2. I am up not having a good nights rest so Thanks for resting
In goodness everpresent. Wherever we are our thoughts can rest assured on God and His care for us.This is especially meaningful for
me today. Thanks Evan you are such a help in keeping us on the right
    Path.

  3. Thanks Evan for sharing this Awesome spiritual truth.

-reminds me of the comfort in Mrs Eddy’ hymn 207:

    O gentle presence, peace & joy & power;
O Life divine, that owns each waiting hour,
Thou Love that guards the nestling’s faltering flight…

His habitation high is here, & nigh,
His arm encircles me, & mine, & all..’

  4. Just for you Evan: thank you so much for your podcast on pandemic fears. It is gold and will be replayed daily until healing of Covid in our family. I am a student of Beverly Bemis DeWindt, CSB (class of 1985), and Tim Myers is my practitioner. I had mentioned to him about how much your articles resonated with me and he suggested your Spiritview blog. I have been grateful ever since. Please know you are dearly loved and supported by many!

  5. Last night I was unable to sleep. I got up and read the lesson sermon. Then Psalm 23 came to me
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing
He makes me lie down in green pastures
He leads me beside calm waters….”
What great comfort and then later to awake to this message today!
Thank you Evan. Love to all ❣️

  6. I find myself waking up toward morning because I am entangled with some thought not of God.
I read somewhere that error/mortal mind rehearses itself. yes indeed. I often lie there and
some bible verse or something of S&H floats into consciousness and gives me peace.

  7. Found that reading the lesson before going to bed gives peace.
Books relating to the study of Christian Science, available at Christian Science Reading Rooms throughout the world are also a peaceful and inlightening way to “tuck in” all whom your thoughts are resting on.
One of my favorite is “We Knew Mary Baker Eddy”. Medium and short stories relating to those who served at her homes and had daily contact with our leader. I’ve read through it twice, one chapter each night. Amazing demonstrations, gained through the experiences shared from her most trusted companions.
Thank you for the topic which addresses the night time vidual of keeping our thought uplifted.

469:21-24, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy,
“We bury the the sense of infinitude, when we admit that, although God is infinate, evil has a place in this infinity, for evil can have no place, where all space if filled with God.”

Have a most wonderful day and night!

    1. Your suggestion of reading the lesson and passages from the books on MBE before sleeping rang a bell for me. Currently, I’m not getting out a book, but my mind naturally drifts to Bible verses and the:
“Scientific Statement of Being”, plus the Daily Prayer and Lord’s Prayer, recalled and recited mentally, to keep me constantly pointing my thoughts toward peaceful rest and away from interrupted waking. Your suggestion will be a big benefit, because here at home I have a library of books to choose from. including Mom’s CS Monitor Religious articles pasted into used CS Quarterly’s, resting on a shelf, that are available before heading to bed.
      Thank you for your suggestion.

  8. “Stand porter at the door …” MBE
“Action expresses more gratitude than speech.”MBE
EVAN, you keep us tuned in to God’s channel!

  9. I love the poem “Storm Stilling” from the Sentinel that Martine shared. We can “dress down” fear, worry, suspicion, and willfulness with Christ’s peaceful presence. It reminds me of this statement by Mary Baker Eddy:
“The best spiritual type of Christly method for uplifting human thought and imparting divine Truth, is stationary power, stillness, and strength; and when this spiritual ideal is made our own, it becomes the model for human action.”
    (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 93:13)

Uplifting human thought and action by stationary power, stillness, and strength is what I’ll be striving to do today!

  10. Evan, your inspiring articles and all the replies are so healing. Thank you everyone for sharing. I’m one who’s been having a problem sleeping and I’m confident that I will be able to get my needed rest tonight.

  11. Dear Evan and our Spirit View Community,
Thank you so much for your shared wisdom and uplifting thoughts. Last nite after listening to the news, I was overcome w tears of fear for the first time re our election. I didn’t wish to stay in that fear. The idea came to pray with the 23rd Psalm. Here is the paraphrase that calmed my soul.
The Lord, Supreme Wisdom, is our Decision-Maker and the foundation of our democracy.
    I will not fear.
She makes us to relax and be at peace while we await the results.
As the One Mind gives us stillness and clarity of thought, I feel my soul, my joy, being restored.
Our loving Shepherd leads our country in right paths, so that we may continue to be a light to the world.
Even though we walk THROUGH the darkest valley of dishonesty and divisiveness,
    We will fear no evil,
    for You, Perfect Love, are with us;
Your strength, inspiration and divine laws–comfort us.
You prepare a fair election before us in the presence of those who would like to upset and create discord.
    You anoint our heads with oil, with gentleness, healing and protection;
    Our cup overflows.
Surely goodness, freedom, justice and mercy shall follow and unify us all the days of our lives.
And we will dwell in the house of unconditional Love, in security and equity, for ever.

  12. If I am wakeful at night due to being disturbed over something, I find very helpful a Christian Science Sentinel article titled “Prayer in the Middle of the Night” by Walter Rodgers. Have found healing–and peaceful sleep–utilizing the ideas in this article, many times.

  13. Thank you Sheila B. I thought Evan screened comments before posting or I would not have included personal info and I would have included a huge thank you to the Spiritview community that are disciples indeed. Cathryn your paraphrase is thoughtful, inspiring and comforting—beautifully set forth—thank you.

  14. Cathryn in San Diego, I love your use of the 23rd Psalm, I also have prayed with it making changes to meet my current need.. I usually end with something like I shall not want for home, security, love, strength, peace, harmony, joy, patience – on and on! The list is endless and constantky changing.

  15. I have found this paragraph from Science and Health, (Glossary definition of Valley ) really helpful and work with it daily. “Though the way is dark in mortal sense, Divine Life and Love illumine it, destroying the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death and the supposed reality of error.”

  16. Thank you, Evan. And thank you for the wonderful interview Tony Lobl did with you and which is posted on JSH online: “Mastering pandemic fears with spiritual truth”. It is so very precious! Thank you!

  17. Thank you dear Evan , and I agree with Philipp Gulley’s utterance. However what you give us today is wonderful and very needed! Enjoying the peaceful thoughts coming from God, make a “mighty fine pillow” to rest my thought and head upon – I like this loving and comforting SpiritView idea – thanks a lot! How cozy this foto – could immediately jump into that bed with the nice sunshine coming in ! ♡
