See past negativity to what God sees

October 17, 2018 | 27 comments

I had a patient call for prayerful help with a physical problem she was struggling with, and because she had been struggling with this problem for a long time, she sounded very discouraged and depressed about it. I shared some spiritual truths with her that brightened her thought and made her feel much better. We agreed to pray together for complete healing.

Later, she called back and apologized for sounding so negative when she first called me. “I’m normally very cheery and upbeat,” she explained.

I replied, “You don’t have to apologize for the negativity. I don’t listen to what my patients sound like to decide what’s true about them. I listen to what divine Science tells me about them and draw my conclusions from that.”

She laughed and said, “Well, of course, you do. That’s why I called you in the first place. To see the real me!”

And that’s always our goal in the practice of Christian Science, to see the spiritual man of God’s creating, and never get suckered into believing something negative about another.

God’s children are positive, inspired, upbeat, and a joy to be around. Anything less is not God’s child, and to be rejected and replaced in consciousness with the right idea of God’s offspring. In this way, we help ourselves and others realize more of their identity in God’s glorious image. Our thought improves, their thought improves, and everyone is better off.

  1. Dear Evan,
Thank you so much for this wonderful and inspiring message this morning. Just what I needed today, as so often is the case. I am usually a “silent follower” but just had to express my gratitude for this post.

  2. Thank U for helping me to see my true identity and the true identity of my family & friends. What is true about me is true for all. Such a good & “true” thought for today & every day. Much gratitude, Evan, for another God-filled day

  3. What a wonderful post. It is so encouraging to see through the spiritual lens, the reality of the perfection of God’s creation and never accepting the material picture of sickness, which is just an illusion.

I have experienced this beautiful fact of filling our consciousness with Truth, which totally wipes out the seeming error of sickness. Just as light dispels all darkness, the realization of our true selfhood made in God’s image and likeness, perfect and unblemished, totally wipes out all sickness. We need to see with the lens of God or in the light of God, or with our spiritual sense in order to see perfection.

The material lens never presents the true picture, but misleads us and mesmerises us into believing that our situation of physical disability is hopeless, needs medical attention etc. The only correction which needs to be made is not in the body, but in our thought and in our consciousness I.e. to accept our spiritual identity as the only real identity, made in the image and likeness of God. God could never make an imperfect model. His creation man, is always perfect, complete, intact and whole. Remove the illusion and see the reality and experience it…the allness of God good and the nothingness of evil…sin, disease and death.

  4. I really needed this messgage, Evan, thankyou so much, you always seem to know what I need to know. Thanks to Nergish too for your very thoughtful response, which is also helpful to me and all.

  5. What about Healing from emotional problems or from abuse or from times when we’ve been betrayed….?? The worse thing to do in these cases is to gloss over the hurt and tell ourselves it doesn’t really matter or even really hurt. This does damage to our Hearts. We need to feel our emotional hurts and not deny them and then find a way to give comfort and love to ourselves……otherwise we, as Humans, can tend to let each little fracture in our Heart go underground and get covered over with a blanket of Denial which then causes us to eventually close down our Hearts, the feeling, caring part of us, and we walk around not feeling much of anything on a very deep level – especially Love for Ourselves and Others!

    1. Christian Science teaches one to approach the healing of emotional problems differently than the healing of physical ailments. Physical ailments can be healed by undoing the belief that they exist with the spiritual truth that God made man healthy and well, and keeps him that way. But if resentment, anger, hard feelings, fear, feelings of betrayal, feeling deserted, etc., are involved, then these cannot be just denied. They have to be resolved with truth and love, which may include learning forgiveness, how to be honest, learning what to trust and not to trust, where to place faith, finding something to be grateful for, etc. And the desired outcome is a heart free of the suffering, and a mind overflowing with love, Spirit-based joy and gratitude. That’s a real healing.

      Thanks for sharing, Bevi.

      1. Do I walk in the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth or am I in denial of all the discord and evil surrounding me? At what point does the prayer of argument become pretending to be Spiritual? If God is all and all is good; how are emotional problems (reaction to evil) “real” and physical problems unreal? There are no problems in God’s creation. Please check me on this; in the Spirit of Truth.

        1. Hi Kenny,

At no point are evil conditions real, but the demand is to see them as unreal and prove it. To prove sin unreal, it typically has to be exposed as sin, and then it can be effectively handled with truth. For instance, if a person is full of anger, it’s typically not helpful to repeatedly say, “I am not angry.” And then continue to feel anger. It’s Love that heals the anger. So, a healthy first step is often to see, and admit, that the anger is not right, that it’s not the way God made us to feel, and then reach out to Love for dissolving that anger and healing it. The effect is a transformation of character and outlook. Just denying sin, without addressing it, usually leaves the sin to smolder and worsen.

Oftentimes, people deny sin, without really healing it, and no improvement occurs. Conditions may even worsen. The sin has to be uncovered, exposed, and then it can be dealt with in a healing way. Jesus exposed lots of sin in his healing ministry. And in that way, helped people find the kingdom of heaven within. Thanks for sharing!

  6. Que mens. Maravilhosa chegar na hora em que o erro tenta nos iludir com suas mentiras. Nos fortalece e disipa as nuvens do medo e duvida. Obrigada

  7. Thank YOU, Evan! I just feel a need to share on this Blog from a different space than most of the contributors. I was raised in C.S., but I never really experienced it from the Heart and Feeling place. It was always just an intellectual recitation of words, words, words. I see so many people just quoting and spouting things from the Bible and Science and Health without any feeling of their own original understanding. To me, it’s NOT the words, but how it resonates in my own Heart that makes it Real. And I don’t even need to use words from the Bible or Science and Health to validate what I think! (What a Concept!) I appreciate that you use other ideas, words and quotes (outside of the C.S. spectrum) to bring across spiritual ideas for living! You are doing much Good for the C.S. Religion and for the World! Bless You! Bevi

  8. Dear Bevi, My heart goes out to you. As one who seemed to experience abusive behavior from a family member for many years, I know how difficult it seems to be to face it and let it go. It needs to be healed. It took me a long time, but I finally was able to feel true forgiveness and that it didn’t matter whether he saw what he did and ever apologized or not. I had carried these hurts around for a long time, and they didn’t hurt him—they only hurt me. When I felt forgiveness and saw his true nature as God’s child I could let go of the false pictures. What freedom that has brought to me! As MBE says, we are responsible for our own thoughts and acts. When we correct our own thought that brings us freedom.

  9. Thanks Evan for explaining that there is different thinking to heal physical and emotional problems. I too find words not followed by action are hollow, certainly not CS as conceived by MBE.

  10. Thank you, Evan. And commentors. 🙂
I am grateful that with Christian Science treatment there is no formula. We pray and study and watch and love and listen and obey..the voice of our Father-Mother God.

    1. Thank you, dear Kathyw, it`s my understanding and feeling, too, to be very grateful for – so very good!! 🙂

  11. What a sweety, that lovely girl on the foto!

Just had a lovely testimony meeting, and I read about the toppic “Christian Science is the best healer”, based on the passage from Science and Health by MBEddy on page vii “The question: What is Truth, is answered by demonstration, – by healing both disease and sin; and this demonstration shows that Christian healing confers the most health and makes the best men.”
Isn`t that a wonderful perspective of Christian Science? I am sure, it is! I love that.
I we love, love, love we cannot else but see only the man of God`s making in our neighbor as His loved child. And I think, that is not just a saying, it is the Truth that heals. Am working on it.

Thank you all for your comments, specially Evan for your very loving and so scientifically clearing explanation to Bevi`s concern.
Am grateful we can comment, discuss and clear concerns within this very inspiring, loving and healing blog! Thank you Evan ! 🙂

  12. Thank you, Uta, for your comments and your readings at your church meeting. I look forward to ours tonight. 🙂

    1. Have a very lovely and inspiring service, Kathyw .

I once read and it is my conviction, that a testimony meeting is a festival of Love !

Wish all commenter friends such a church service tonight !
      Love to all

  13. Thank You, Daphne for your sweet compassion and empathy! (Love how we are trained in C.S. to preface any “bad stuff” with the word, “seeming”!) I am continuing to seek and receive help and healing for my experience and after I have achieved my God-given Wholeness and Love for myself, I will then be able to look at Forgiveness. Blessings!

  14. Hi Evan, Thank you for taking the time to reply and sharing your clarification and wisdom. I appreciate what you are doing here. Stay in the Spirit of Truth.
