The difference between knowing what to do and why you’re doing it

October 18, 2018 | 35 comments

If you are a student of Christian Science, do you know why?

Here’s a short video clip produced by Michael Jr, that explains the difference between knowing what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Lots of people know what they are doing, but it’s the ones who know why they are doing it that have the best results—and change the world for the better.

Watch until the end. It’s inspiring.

“Know your why”

Thanks to a reader who sent this link to me!

  1. Inspirational! Our purpose is to love, because our source is Love. When love becomes our all, we become at one with our source and that is the unlocking of our true potential and that of others. My “Why” is to express my Maker, as a painting expresses its artist. When we forget ourselves, we open up our expression of what we are,, we free up what we can do, and “nothing shall be impossible unto you”. Perfect humilty is perfect reflection and freedom to be God-like! That’s why.

  2. Thank you, Evan, thank you, Michael, thank you, Ken. You put your finger on it, Ken – humility. Asking to be shown and then acting on that in trust.

    1. Thank you Janet. There is such a contrast between the humilty of being in God’s image and likeness and the arrogance of “Ye shall be as gods”, the joy and inspiration of atonement and the
      empty flattery of self.
May I interest you in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtrSJL_flCY which looks at atonement and gives another angle on “Why?”: “It’s great to be His Son!”

      1. Thank you Ken, for your lovely and poem, you speak on YouTube. You speak very distinktly and I could understand and follow your inspired words very well, thanks a lot

  3. This is so impressive, and , as Ken syas, inspirational. Thank you for sharing it, Evan, it certainly makes your point.

  4. Living a life of purpose, why am I here, Father! Understanding the why brings an exclamation point to the everyday activities of our life. It’s the difference between eating a dull lettuce salad or eating one chock full of wonderful texture(nuts) color (lots of vegetables) flavor(herbs and seasoning) and a delicious salad dressing! Thanks, Evan, and reader who shared it with you. Lots of my friends/family are going to see this in their inbox today!

  5. That was sooooo Inspiring! Thanks! To me….it’s like we can get up and read/study the Lesson, go to Church, sing Hymns, yada, yada….that’s our What! But when you or someone in your Family is Ill or is Homeless or who has fallen into the Depths of Despair….it’s that very “Cast-Down-Ness” that provides the Why and that is the impetus for the Lifting Up. There is real Heartfelt Soulness behind Prayer or Hymns when it comes from the Depths of the Heart and all the false rubbish of our “Pretended Devoutness” has fallen off and we are at the core of our pain – that’s when we can really contact that God within – the Higher Power! It’s only by Hitting our True Bottom that the False Ego Identity can finally be stripped away and we can Surrender! Feel, Deal and Heal!!

  6. OH MY GOSH…THANK YOU isn’t enough! What an awesome wake up from the clip and the comments. Oh, and did I say THANK YOU…I know “what ” I said…but I thank you because I know “why” now.

  7. There is a finer
    more subtle set
    of emotions we
    all possess…
    They are like the
    1000 string harp
    of the Soul which
    gently quivers as
    the breath of the
    still, small voice
    of the Divine speaks
    to our hearts…

  8. Thanks so much for this inspiring video! Exactly what I needed today for a project that I’m working on. Why? What’s my reason for doing this? Thank you!

  9. I love this illustration and demonstration of “why” — of knowing why we are doing something. When we let what we feel and know from Soul- God inspire us in our actions, our thoughts and love for one another grows, a change of thought guides us, a deeper thought and inspiration comes to us that leads to progress. This humility can result in finding an answer needed in a particular situation, healing and uplift, a profound sense of being loved, and confidence to go forward. Thank you everyone for your helpful comments today!

  10. Ok, I love the English language very much, and therefore I am striving to learn and learn in order to understand some things better and better. So it is with the video, Evan sent us in today`s SpiritView. The thing this time is, that I have to listen again and again to understand the inspirational part fully. The singing of Amazing Grace is wonderful!

My WHY to be here and doing what I am doing is to be a witness of God, to glorify God and to express God in every single quality He gave me, and He gave me these qualities only to glorify Him and that is my reason of living and doing!!!
So, that`s how I learnt it and what I agree wholeharted with! Thank you Evan to make us think about the WHY and for the wonderful video.

Thanks Maximo for your inspired poem today!
And thanks all for your helpful comments !

  11. Wow. Thanks. We often have a lot of decisions to make…sometimes seemingly too many at one time. Asking ourselves why and listening…can help speed up that process!

  12. Thank You for your “Thank You”, Maximo! I, too, am inspired by YOUR Comments and especially by your Oh so sensitive and exquisite Poetry! True Soul can often only be expressed through Poetry! Bless YOU….Wise Soul!!

  13. Evan thanks for the video “Know Your Why” which so clearly and visually shows the “Why” and how different it is from the what. Thanks, Ken, for being the first one to comment with such inspiration. Unfortunately, I was not able to listen to your poem as the sound on your link was very soft and I didn’t see a way to increase it. Also, thanks to Kirsten for the link to “To be Divinely Inspiring” which was indeed inspiring.

    1. Dear Lori, thank you for looking. The words are available if you scoll down where is says “Show more”, and this will give further links that may be helpful. I will check out the sound, – thank you for letting me know.

  14. This conversation highlights why some folks call and say they have prayed and prayed without
being healed. Stating a fact, even a spiritual fact, does not bring healing – but the WHY – the meaning behind the words, the understanding and the acceptance of its truth – brings instant healing. Just reading or thinking the truth is not enough. But understanding that the truth wipes out the false belief allows us to accept the healing. Children can memorize 2+2=4, but can’t demonstrate it until they understand the math behind the answer. Once they learn that – math is no longer a mystery which doesn’t make sense. OK – think algebra instead of 2+2!!! Wonderful post all around!! Thank you, Evan!!

  15. Thanks Ken for responding to my comment. I did as you suggested and it worked. What a beautiful poem. I especially like the very first verse which reads:
“I can of mine own self do nothing”,
    Our Saviour Jesus said.
He held this thought throughout the day
And when he went to bed.
This is the thought I will also hold throughout the day and when I go to bed. With God ALL things are possible.

  16. Thanks Evan for sharing this video clip! Outstanding!!!
It really makes the point. Really need to get it — the WHY — the reason for
    it all!
Thanks too for all the comments today.
I love being part of this community of SpiritView.
