Shed the destructive guilt complex from old theology

November 9, 2015 | 6 comments

If we do something wrong, then we need to admit it, correct our error and do right.

However, there are times when one doesn’t do anything wrong, yet still feels guilty. They start blaming themselves for some event gone wrong or a relationship gone sour, and allow self-berating thoughts to take over and beat them up from the inside out. They start feeling down and discouraged and wonder why they are such a mess-up. Has that ever happened to you?

It’s a symptom of what I call believing in “old theology.”

Old theology is religious beliefs held tightly by mankind over the centuries that Christian Science has rendered invalid today.

For instance, the doctrine that man is a born sinner is old theology. Christian Science has revealed it as not true. Man is not the progeny of Adam, but the offspring of Spirit. This is what Jesus knew and understood. He could spiritually see beyond the mortal to the immortal in every person he met, and he could bring out their immortality to the effect of healing. He did not condemn people as hopeless sinners, but worked to bring out their sinless nature in God’s image.

Christian Science does the same today. It takes thought beyond the mortal, to the immortal, and brings out God’s image as man’s reality today, now this moment. Man is God’s image, not a wretched mortal.

But this time-honored theological belief that man is a born sinner is so widely believed, even today, that it exists almost everywhere in the public consciousness. If a spiritual thinker does not “come out and be separate,” (II Cor. 6:17) from the public consciousness, they may very well mentally pick up on this commonly held belief, and then believe it themselves. It creates a guilt complex that is not appropriate. It makes one feel guilty all the time, when they should be more aware of their innocence and purity in God’s image.

So, if you’re ever feeling guilty and shouldn’t be, it might help to “come out and be separate,” from old theology. Don’t act out the role of guilt when you’re not guilty. Point the finger of accusation at mortal mind and denounce its outgrown beliefs with the truth that sets you free from its unfair blame.

God beholds your innocence, and you should too!

  1. Oh Evan, this is sooooo Good and sooooo needed in our World today! And even with Christian Scientists, too, who have been taught that we are not sinners, but yet often still have some lingering guilt hidden away. Often this stems from childhood programming or just an unsettled feeling that we are not “good enough” to deserve God’s unconditional Love. Thank you for affirming our Innocence today! Much Love!

  2. Yes, this article gets to the “core” of the whole matter..our innate innocence under (or instead of!) what seems hidden under (many) layers of false education, whispered lies…the whole wet blanket of mortality! And we needn’t accept that it takes time, a long time and great effort, to crawl out from under all this! Truth is spontaneously true, now, here!! When a light goes on, it goes on immediately, not slowly and laboriously! God, divine Truth, is lifting mankind out of all false concepts and the resulting illnesses, fears, lack, even the belief in death! There is great cause for rejoicing!!!

    Thank you, once again, Evan.

    :<))

  3. Evan, am I glad you brought up this blog. Nearly all the accepted religions of today preach that we’re born sinners. Also does anyone know that all the accepted religions that are accepted mainstream today were considered as Cults by the Romans. A Cult is the worshipping of a human instead of God. Even C/S worship their C/S Practitioners which changes From Cult escape to “Bring on the Cults.” How gross and how debilitating a great discovery, because of sheer ignorance, could be destroyed by 1 mistake as this. Each rung in “JACOB’S LADDER” = An understanding of man’s relation to GOD GOOD.

  4. Thank you Evan! This was an idea that I definitely suffered from at one point.

It is also important to remember that God still loves us even when we are not humanly perfect. So many religions teach that God condemns those that fall humanly short of perfection. The alcoholic, drug addict, sex abuser, self-righteous, sick, judgmental, adulterous woman, etc. are all still loved by God, as Jesus so clearly taught us. Of course, God sees our true identity and doesn’t see us as suffering from these errors. And learning to love ourselves as God loves us helps us free ourselves from these enslaving beliefs.

More and more I’m realizing how many people enslave themselves to suffering due to their lack of understanding that God loves them unconditionally. This can be a subtle belief that we may not even realize we are entertaining. This idea was brought out in an interesting way in the October 19th issue of the Christian Science Sentinel in a testimony entitled “Enveloped in Mother-love”. A link to this article is below:

  5. Oh my gosh! I received wonderful ideas not only from the blog post (duh) but from each comment. I guess I’m just in a very receptive place for these truths right now! God gives us what we need every minute.

    Thanks Brian, for the link.

This was so much better than than a cup of tea… 🙂

    Love to all~
