Side with Science to stay healthy

December 9, 2021 | 16 comments

How can you keep your thought and body in a healthy place when many people around you talk about disease, contagion, and fear of viruses?

The short answer is, “Side with Science.”

In explaining how drugs can affect people, even if the person receiving the drug has no knowledge of taking the medicine, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “The chemist, the botanist, the druggist, the doctor, and the nurse equip the medicine with their faith, and the beliefs which are in the majority rule. When the general belief endorses the inanimate drug as doing this or that, individual dissent or faith, unless it rests on Science, is but a belief held by a minority, and such a belief is governed by the majority”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 155).

To stay healthy, it’s important that thought is not swayed by popular belief, either consciously or unconsciously. One must mentally “come out of the pack,” of popular belief, and agree with spiritual reality to demonstrate immunity to popular belief.

As with drugs, so it is with viruses. Whatever the majority of people believe about a virus is what people affected by popular trends experience even if they have no conscious fear of the virus.

To “side with Science”, is to live the laws of God, to be consciously aware of God governing the universe, and to keep man in a state of perfect spiritual health.

When we “side with Science,” we agree with Truth, and disagree with error. We are tuned into spiritual reality, following where God takes us, and not swayed by fears and false beliefs circulating around us.

  1. Thank you for the reminder Evan that we each must do our work for ourselves and for the world around us. There is so much activity centered around what the world perceives as absolute truth. Seek wisdom and Truth in the place where is has always been— within your Consciousness.

  2. I’ve been praying to know how to treat this miasma of fear. I found this very helpful paragraph in an article by Brian Talcott.

    https://journal.christianscience.com/issues/2011/2/129-02/what-should-i-do-when-someone-asks-for-treatment-for-some-other-adult-in-his-her-family

He writes: “One can always pray to “handle” the general resistance to truth, rather than give in to worry. How do we do this? By knowing that true consciousness is Christly and everyone has this consciousness. The fact that man reflects the one perfect God, or Mind, and is conscious only of what this Mind imparts is the basis for all spiritual thinking and reasoning—and healing. Mentally affirming this truth does not intrude upon another’s thought. It is also helpful to know that evil of any kind is no part of anyone’s thought or experience, thereby separating the problem from the individual and treating it as an impersonal claim. Evil and false thinking have no ability to afflict a Christly consciousness. Impersonally putting down the claims of evil has the effect of saving the victim of “the mental assassins,” which is always right to do. There is no need to fret about what seems to be governing another’s thinking. Stick to the truth of being, and leave the rest to God.”

    1. Diane that quote is just wonderful, thank you very much for sharing it. Would love to read the rest of the article but only the first sentence is visible, I believe only subscribers to JSH Online can read the whole thing with that link. If anyone can share the public link it would be much appreciated.

I love that the quote made clear that we must not personalize error or evil (attach it to a person or circumstance) but instead expose its claims impersonally and see that it does not exist.

      Today’s post brought to mind:
“One, with God, is a majority.” https://sentinel.christianscience.com/shared/view/snic05fa90

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.’ (John 16:33)

  3. Reading the citation quoted in your blog today, Evan, reminds me that before I knew
anything about Christian Science I used to take pills and potions for health problems,
as I didn’t know of any other way to feel better. I also recall, that when I took this
material medicine, I just took it and expected it to bring me relief. Sometimes it
didn’t seem to help, and I had to take other doses, or different ones. I didn’t try and help
the medicines along in any way – well, there wasn’t anything I could do to help it along, I just had to
trust and hope that it would work, and mostly I expected it would.

What a relief to have found Christian Science and a remedy that never fails, and
the remedy for all ills is the same – Truth, as revealed to us by Christ Jesus. What’s
more, as we know, it is a Science which can be proved by anyone. We can totally
rely on it, as we do our part, as Evan says, by “living the laws of God, and being
consciously aware of God governing the Universe in a state of perfect spiritual health.”
As we are aware of that, and keep in accord with it in our daily lives, we cannot be
tempted into fearing or believing what most of the world believes and fears. We can
trust in Christ’s statement “Ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.”

We so need to keep going on this one until the whole illusion breaks and disappears
before the Christ, Truth, as it must and will.

    1. Beautifully stated Maggie, thank you. Yes we will “keep going on this until the whole illusion breaks before Truth, as it must and will.” It’s uplifting to realize that Christian Science students in every corner of the Earth are knowing the Truth, bearing witness to the spiritual reality. How powerful that is!

Thank you Evan and love to all!

  4. Evan,
This is an excellent Spiritview. Thank you! I love how you have described mortal opinions vs. Truth. I cannot help but think that many appear to be swimming in the ocean of mortal opinion, caught by riptides of belief in a virus or pandemic and fighting the current while being swept out to sea. It is impossible to fight the currents but is wiser to rise above them by knowing Truth and walking on the water as Jesus did. Everyone has the ability to do this and experience peace in the seeming storm.

  5. Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him. There is no disease.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 421)

  6. Your post was certainly the booster I needed this morning Evan, and the truth-packed comments are powerful antidotes for what seems to be such a prevalent and persistent fear in human consciousness. So much here to inspire confidence in prayer and affirmation. Thank you all!

      1. Yes, even though you are a member they make you log in. I have gained a lot from my membership in JSH Online. And my subscription for the CS Monitor. Thank you, Diane, for typing the important part out for everyone.

  7. Thank you very much Evan. I thought thoroughly about your clearing spiritual views. It is very helpful like ever. And I still have to ponder all this prayerfully and also tomorrow and further.
The thought came out of what I learned in CS that “Science” means divine Truth. And I pray to know what Christ Jesus said “ye shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free^. That is a wonderful promise, and we can trust God to lead us the way of Truth, divine Science ♡
