We are in an age of absolving responsibility for thought.
Legions of scientists seek cause and effect in the physical body. They attribute absolute mind-power to the brain, creative power to DNA, and control over life to the heart, lungs and partner organs. They publish high profile studies depicting their observations and hundreds of millions of people believe the reports.
For people who believe matter controls mind the research appears logical and sound.
But Jesus Christ taught more. He demonstrated a divine Mind at work in this universe that is greater than the body. He controlled the brain, heart, lungs and muscles through the power of God. And he left his example for others to follow.
The detrimental effect of believing the body governs mind is to absolve responsibility for thought. People resign to hopelessness by making conclusions such as, “If DNA controls my eating habits, it doesn’t matter what I think. If a propensity to drink exists in my genes I’m doomed to be an alcoholic. If a gene says I’m going to get cancer later in life I’d better prepare for the worst.”
Christian Science explains a better way.
Divine Mind governs the body. We are not helpless. A bad material condition is the effect of human belief. And it can be changed with spiritual truth.
As Jesus taught, “Know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”
What we think does matter. It can make all the difference.
Mary Baker Eddy, a phenomenal Christian healer of the 19th century, shared profound insights on how to heal metaphysically in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Here are a few choice sentences on divine Mind’s government of the body:
Realizing that the issues of my life are really mental and spiritual has changed the whole direction of my life. It has made the Scriptures come alive for me as the guidebook for caring for my body, my family, my career, even how I spend my free time. Keeping thought aligned to God is really important! Health is natural and normal for an idea of Mind. Joy is natural and normal for an expression of Love. Abundance is natural and normal for a daughter of Soul. Ask yourself: what is natural and normal for a child of the Kingdom? Those things that pop up in our experience that our not natural and normal? Well, we have divine authority for refusing them in our experience. We come to see that they are like the darkness which flees at the coming of the light. Okay, this is not always easily seen, but it’s worth the effort to stay the course until the truth becomes the reality in your thought. Whatever seems off course will adjust accordingly. It’s really an exciting way to live one’s life! Yes, it requires personal responsibility for guarding thought and action. Thank you, Evan. I love this blog.
Very timely message as I have been struggling with negative thoughts about some test results.
This is so wonderful to read here! Not only is it divine Truth and Love coupled together in a healing message as we READ it, but it is exactly what is happening in the” outer world” to keep the thinker at base levels. Working out each day from divine MIND and allowing us to HEAR IT and LISTEN TO IT ,and then be OBEDIENT to it ,is our salvation! I am proof of that, as when I use MIND consciously as my standpoint ,and not my own thoughts, wow, I can really make progress!! Thank you, Evan again, for your deep, heartfelt and loving posts and work for the world!-I appreciate your selfless work!!!–Merri
Sometimes progress is slow and when that happens, it seems to tell us that prayer is of no avail. But take heed, all of us is working out our divine salvation and it shall come. Don’t let mortal thoughts take hold of your consciousness and discourage you. It shall surely come to fruition since God, the only force and the only power is behind it.
Thank you Evan….I have been to many of your wonderful lectures. How nice of you to add this web site. I have signed up to receive your good thoughts. 🙂
Lovely article Evan, on control of Mind over matter. The citations selected from Science and Health are very helpful indeed. Deeply grateful for such a lovely article.
