The gift of listening

One of the gifts God has bestowed upon each of us as children of God is the ability to listen for divine instruction and see solutions to problems.

For instance, I was at my local airport in Pasco, a few weeks ago, waiting to catch a plane to Salt Lake City; then another flight to Tucson, AZ. My flight in Pasco was delayed because of mechanical problems, and soon I could see that I was going to miss my flight out of Salt Lake.

It was evening, and there were no later flights to catch. I needed to be in Tucson to deliver a lecture the next morning. What was I to do? I was clueless.

I got mentally quiet and prayed for God’s guidance.

There were no obvious human solutions.

The agents were swamped with people wondering what to do. I sat in my chair listening for an angel message. No clear direction came. So, I continued to stay calm, be patient and listen.

Twenty minutes later, as I was eating a small salad I picked up at the food counter, I felt a mental nudge to stop everything and go to the counter. I looked up and there were three agents with no customers standing at the counter. A miracle by itself! And a window of opportunity. I walked over and mentioned to one agent that I was going to miss my connection. He took my ticket, and within a minute, put me on a flight to Phoenix that left Salt Lake City an hour later than my Tucson flight. Phoenix is a two-hour drive from Tucson. Perfect! I said. And walked back to finish my salad.

I was overflowing with gratitude. The act was so simple, so easy to do, yet, I hadn’t seen it coming. The possibility hadn’t even occurred to me. But it had occurred to God, and He had nudged me at just the right moment to see it through, and I was listening.

I still kept praying to see the local plane repaired and ready to go, which eventually happened, and in just enough time to get me to Salt Lake and catch my plane to Phoenix. I had a nice drive to Tucson at midnight, and all was well the next day. No panic, no worries, no reason to be afraid. And again, I was so grateful to be part of a workable solution.

When unexpected problems pop up in our lives, it can be tempting to get worked up about them, fret, worry and fear. But that’s the last thing we want to do. It doesn’t help. It puts a fog in thought that doesn’t see solutions. Rather than panic, it helps to stay calm and listen. To listen for God’s direction, and it will come. It’s always present, and His voice speaks at the perfect moment an action needs to be taken.

Listen, follow, and rejoice!

  1. You are so right to allow God’s thoughts to guide you. This is just another proof that when we take time to adjust to our Spiritual awareness, not to panic, that our guidance to meet our needs will be fulfilled. This reminder leaves us with a tranquil need to master our emotions.
Well done, Thanks Evan to remind us our critical needs will be met.

  2. Thank you Evan! I often think of this line from the article “God’s Law of Adjustment” by Adam Dickey in times like you described:

If a man were drowning in mid-ocean with apparently no human help at hand, there is a law of God which, when rightly appealed to, would bring about his rescue.

We just need to *know* God’s law is at hand…and silence human will to hear divine guidance…and a solution to any situation we face will be revealed to us.

  3. Thank You Evan! I have a clear understanding now as to how I should respond to all situations as they arise. Don’t do- Listen.

  4. Thank you , Evan! What a Beautiful example of “Be still and know……” How does God know our need and then fulfill it? The only answer I can come up with is that once we know that we are one with God, Mind, it is impossible for our need not to be fulfilled, since demand and supply are one in Mind. Is that right..??

  5. Page 115 “SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATION OF IMMORTAL MIND.” Was an article that I wanted to write about but couldn’t remember any of the words so that I could look it up. I could have easily given it up but that would have given into error or mental malpractice. This desire was for weeks and it really frustrated me. I didn’t even have the right words to give to my other friends who were C/Scientists so they could help me. Then out of the clear blue sky the page came to thought and there it was. What a great example and demonstration of THE GIFT OF LISTENING!

  6. Listen, follow and rejoice! Three key words in the first verse of Hymn 304 “Shepherd, show me how to go …” This verse is a petition for God’s guidance, accompanied by the promise (on our part) to follow. Learning to listen, and following, suggest obedience. And when God’s direction comes, we can rejoice- be grateful for His unerring guidance, as you so beautifully demonstrated in your experience, Evan. Thank you for sharing with us.

  7. Thank you Evan! I am faced with a seemingly knotty situation involving other people, which needs God’s help. “I will listen and rejoice”, for I know divine Mind is always in control and will send the right message to all of us involved, to untie the knots!

  8. In the Bible, Proverbs 3:5, 6 we read, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Our own limited understanding may not have all of the answers we need. but God – divine Mind – certainly does!

  9. thank you, dear Evan, for your wonderfull and blessing experience your share with us!
It helps me a lot. And thank you Shireen for comparing this experience of Evan with Mrs. Eddy`s sweet song Nr.304 “Shepherd, show me how to go”, thats so lovely – thanks also to all today`s comentators!

  10. Oh, thank you Evan: there is not room to write of the many times when despair about a solution to some looming problem plagued me/us—and by staying still, turning our back(s) on the erroneous fears knocking on our mortal minds——we listened, and the solution, the direction of how to solve the problem was there. Even when mortal mind kept trying to push us in the opposite/wrong direction, God put a stop to any erroneous action and placed us exactly where His love intended for me/us to be. And, looking back, we were always astonished, then so incredibly grateful for Divine Love’s guidance. Daily I say, “Thank you, God.”

  11. Adam Dickey’s God’s of Adjustment was one of the first CS pamphlets I read. Every time I slap a difficult situation up against the ideas in that pamphlet, the idea of help in the middle of the ocean seems less and less impossible.
