Sometimes people are tempted to think they can accomplish something good through evil means. For instance, if they disapprove of another’s actions, and decide they need to change the other person’s behavior through yelling at them, berating them, and intimidating them into submission until they bend to their wants, they might feel like they did something “good” because they got what they wanted. However, they would be misled. If their yelling resulted in another person feeling resentment and anger, and possibly even wanting revenge, the long-term consequences leave everyone worse off. And there is nothing good about that.
Mary Baker Eddy offers an astute observation about what produces the best results. She writes, “The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable. Evil is not power” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 192).
Love has power. Charity has power. Intelligence, wisdom, compassion have power. Hatred, anger, intimidation, threats, are temporal frauds. They are not to be desired. They are to be shed for the healing action of their opposites, the Love and Truth of God.
Stick with living the good and the true from God. The good you do is God’s power in action. It brings the best effects.
