The most important food

August 22, 2023 | 24 comments

Many people spend a considerable amount of time thinking about what food they are going to eat. To make wise decisions, it’s important that taking in spiritual food is at the top of one’s list of desires!

Spiritual food is the most important food of all. A knowledge of Truth, the inspiration of Soul, wisdom and love coming from God, are what feed consciousness with healthy and fit images of thought, and in turn, keep the body in good health.

The human body is human consciousness. If consciousness is filled with fear, worry, anxiety, and doubt about food choices, the body it governs reflects the discord and dismay thought signals to it.

Thought fed by Truth and Love, makes wise decisions. It is not influenced by selfish want, gluttony, blind impulse, or ignorance. It makes decisions that reflect the intelligence and wisdom of divine Mind. It is a peaceful state of thought that manifests balance, sensible reason and sound logic.

Divine Mind does not need to know the nutritional make up of material food to influence our thought into wise decision-making. Divine Mind knows what is best for us, and always steers our thought in a healthy direction. When we humbly listen for divine direction, the voice of wisdom will guide our decision-making, and we’ll make choices that feel good and produce a good result.

Jesus Christ taught, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6, RSV). Righteousness is right thinking, spiritual thinking. When we seek a spiritually inspired state of thought before we seek food to put into our mouth, we’ll have a state of thought that is at peace with God. It will be calm, poised, under control, and ready to make intelligent decisions.

Real fulfillment, satisfaction, and contentment are not products of what we eat, but of what we think. Fill thought with spiritual truth first, and anxieties about physical food will disappear, along with any negative side effects associated with it.

  1. An outstanding blog! Evan, I hope you can share this with the newspaper editor who often uses your contributions! There’s so much fear about food in the general thought.
What we take in, we radiate! So let it be peace and love.

  2. Thank you so much Evan, for this perfectly timed (for me) article. I love “The human body is human consciousness.” To me this says, when we are following God, we automatically eat what is seen or believed to be healthy for us – and if we occasionally don’t it cannot harm us, as we are spiritual anyway, not material and it is our thought that governs what we see as a material body.

  3. Thanks, so, so, so much for sharing this with us, Evan! Perfect thoughts for today, which will make our day better and better!

  4. Thanks Evan and all inspiring crew,
How true it is when we are busy and focuse in our activities and particularly when we are aware of Spirit’s presence, guiding us in each moment of a day, often we forget about food because we are enjoying ourself and reassured by the Spiritual power. That reminds me when we are with guests around table, it is not really food we are enjoying the most , but the
exchanges to one another and hopefully to beneficiate and elevate our thoughts.
    To a next level

  5. Thanks so much Evan. Another one of your wonderful, practical daily thoughts filled with inspired wisdom. Knowing that “filling” ourselves with the consciousness of spiritual truths will intuitively guide our eating choices in right directions provides a most comforting approach to meal times.

  6. “It is as necessary for a health-illusion, as for an illusion of sickness, to be instructed
out of itself into the understanding of what constitutes health; for a change in either a health-belief or a belief in sickness affects the physical condition.”
    Science and Health pg. 297:7-11
And in the front of Science and Health is this quote from Shakespeare “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

  7. A line in the Lord’s prayer and its spiritual interpretation given to us
by Mary Baker Eddy is a useful thought in thinking about food:-

“Give us this day our daily bread” – “Give us grace for today, feed the
    famished affections”.

Thinking of our true spiritual food in this way we can apply the
metaphysical law of changing things into thoughts, and exchanging
the object of sense for the ideas of Soul. We can see our food as
supplied by Divine Love which, as Mary Baker Eddy tells us, “always
has met and always will meet every human need”. Then we can
confidently know that nothing can ever harm us. God never could
make anything to harm us – it would have to harm Him first, as we
are His reflection. That would be an impossibility.

So the food we really need is the provision of Love, and we can give
thanks and enjoy and share without fear.

  8. Thank you Evan. Jesus proved it. He fed the 5000 after a long day of teaching and healing. This came as a great surprise to the people and even to his disciples. This tells us how easy it is to have material food while filled with the spiritual already. Thank you all for your contributions.

  9. The bedrock wisdom provided in the Christian Science textbook states it BEST:

“Departing from Christian Science, some learners commend diet and hygiene. They even practice these, intending thereby to initiate the cure which they mean to complete with Mind, as if the non-intelligent could aid Mind! The Scientist’s demonstration rests on ONE Principle, and there must and can be no opposite rule.”
    (S&H 457: 24-30)

“The scientific government of the body must be obtained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way. On this fundamental point, timid conservatism is absolutely inadmissible.” (S&H 167: 26-30)

“In Christian Science mere opinion is valueless.” (S&H 341:11 only)

  10. Thank you for this reminder. We are fed by Divine Love. The practitioner and I ,worked with this thought and the others, when our daughter showed signs of an eating disorder. She did not eat solid food for a long time, but never lost one pound. She now eats normally and enjoys food. These ideas of food being spiritual thought are the Truth!

  11. I remember reading that during WW2 CS men & women in German prison camps were the last to be liberated because they were in better health than many of the other inmates. I also read that one CS man did not lose weight even though his food was as meagre as everyone elses. He said he had spiritual food to help him survive. Wonderful.

    1. Caz thanks for that fascinating info about the Christian Scientists in the prison camps and how they were able to thrive on spiritual nourishment. Eye opening stuff.

  12. Thank you everyone for wonderful inspired comments today that lift my thought in a Godly direction.

Evan thanks for today’s message, which can certainly be applied beyond eating, to any bodily concerns.
I loved, “The human body is human consciousness.” To me this means there is no actual material body but only the reflection of all the qualities contained in divine Mind, which belong to us as God’s expressions.

  13. Food convenient for me”
    WENDY LOUISE STEVENS
From the December 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

    Prov 30:3
“Feed me with food convenient for me.”

***Sorry, I don’t know how to insert the link, but this article has always meant a lot to me.

  14. Thanks a lot, dear Evan for today’s theme.
I love what St. Matthew says in chapter 6, Verses 25, 31, 32 and 33

    25
Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

    31
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

    32
… for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

    33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteouness; and all these things shall be added into you.

Mrs. Eddy says in SH on p. 494:
“Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need!”

I am always thankfull for all your wonderful inspirations here and the very inspiring articles, “J” is sending us. Thank you very much! ♡♡♡
