The most powerful gratitude list I’ve ever read…

June 29, 2010 | 27 comments

Recently, I received the below in the mail, and was so impressed by the list of spiritual things to be grateful for, that I knew you would appreciate it’s value.

Here it is…

This was prepared by a Christian Science practitioner for a patient who had been suffering for years. He was a wealthy man. The practitioner said he needed to be grateful, but the patient wondered what he could be thankful for when he was so miserable.

These lines were written in response to his plea—“If you think I have much to be grateful for would you make me the kind of list you are asking me to make?”

The man was healed before he had finished reading this list and immediately returned to the practitioner’s office to express gratitude for his healing, and he asked permission to have this list published.

I am grateful that through Him every foe has been conquered.
I am grateful that my every action is in Him.
I am grateful that my life is hid with Christ in God.
I am grateful for the peace which passeth all understanding.
I am grateful that my joy is that which no man taketh from me.
I am grateful that my food is that bread which cometh down from heaven.
I am grateful that I am making my acquaintance with God day by day.
I am grateful that I have the courage to acknowledge Him in all my ways.
I am grateful that my abiding place is in the secret place of the most High under the shadow of the Almighty.
I am grateful that my well-being is a gift from God.
I am grateful that Love never faileth, for God is Love.
I am grateful for that light of Truth which cannot be hid.
I am grateful that I am clothed with the armor of God.
I am grateful for that constant companionship of the Christ, Truth.
I am grateful that my sight is not dependent upon material vision but spiritual vision.
I am grateful that all the intelligence I possess is given to me by my Father.
I am grateful that my home is a house not built with hands, but is eternal in the heavens.
I am grateful that all the mind there can possibly be is the one which Christ Jesus manifested.
I am grateful that my liberty comes by showing myself approved unto God.
I am grateful that harmony comes by right thinking.
I am grateful that progress is one of God’s laws.
I am grateful that my time is the ever present now.
I am grateful that I may commune with Him all day long.
I am grateful that my substance is that which cannot be spent in riotous living.
I am grateful to know that my strength is in proportion to my understanding of God.
I am grateful to know that defeat can never overtake me if I lean on God.
I am grateful to know that the government is upon His shoulders.
I am grateful that Jesus has shown us the way.
I am grateful that I have no other ancestry than God.
I am grateful that the way is straight and narrow and leads up to God.
I am grateful that I draw my supply from the bank of confidence, inexhaustible Love.
I am grateful that my wealth consisteth not in things which I possess.
I am grateful that my faith is based on nothing less than Jesus Christ and Righteousness.
I am grateful that my possessions are my treasures in heaven.
I am grateful that my only guide is the still, small voice in heaven.
I am grateful that the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.
I am grateful that I am awake to the voice of Good.
I am grateful that I have found the Truth, the pearl of great price.
I am grateful that I have my being in the atmosphere of Love.
I am grateful that I shall behold Him in all His glory.
I am grateful that my age is without beginning and without end of days.
I am grateful that the foundation upon which I am building is purity.
I am grateful that I can demonstrate God’s power.

  1. Thank you so much! This is so perfect. I write gratitude lists a lot; and yet my list is not as spiritual as this. I learned so much!! What a gem & treat of a post. 🙂

  2. Evan,
This is WONDERFUL!!! Is it possible to print this out? It would be nice to keep a copy as a reminder of all we have to be GRATEFUL FOR!!!!!
    Thanks again! Much love, Sarah:)

  3. Thank you for this message. God is truly wonderful and infinite and we live, move and have our being in Him now and forever. I could never ask for more.

  4. This is one of the most helpful things I’ve read in a long time. I’d been pondering the passage from Thessalonians:
    I Thess 5:18
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

We’re supposed to give thanks for everything in everything? Instead of complaining mentally about a problem, we’re supposed to be thankful? I wondered how to do that. So, this shows us how we can be thankful for the spiritual truth that is there which applies to the challenge which is operative and can triumph.

This inspires me to search the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings for the truths that appeal to my heart especially that I can be thankful for. What a wonderful spiritual exercise and so fun and joyous. A spiritual adventure. This will be helpful to many.

    1. How strange that I, too, had that list in my hand today. My mental response was the same as yours, so familiar were the references. I was thinking it would b a good idea to look them up. I guess this is my cue, yours too. I’m just noticing the date. I’ve had this in my file a while also.

  5. A express elevator straight to heaven. You can’t ponder these and stay on the ground floor. Thank you.

  6. What a wonderful gratitude list! Never seen anything like this and I love it. Have printed it out to ponder and hopefully put into practice!!

  7. This list is wonderful. While I’ve been making gratitude lists daily for a long time I learned a lot through this one. One is that if you start every line with “I’m grateful for” it has a lot more impact rather than if you just make a list of things even entirely spiritual. I’ve been reading/studying your blog for weeks now and I’m gaining so much from it. Thank you for giving us this daily! M.

  8. Great Post Evan! Just realised my gratidude list is FAAAAR too materially based…time to go up about 6 floors !

  9. I keep looking for things to inspire me, but I get bogged down when I get slammed with the idea that “harmony comes by [my] right thinking” … as if all reality is an extension of my frazzled, scatterbrained, uncontrollable thinking that somehow needs to right itself without any help from God, in order to find God and His peace. So then, what’s the use of that [g]od?

  10. To above,

Your intuition is correct, that it is not the human mind that saves us from suffering. The divine Mind, the Mind of God, divine Love, is our Savior. Christ demonstrated this truth.

When you honor the one God, and express gratitude for the blessings God sends your way, your thinking naturally comes into accord with the divine Mind. Your thoughts are going to improve, and the effect you feel will take you to a better place. But it’s those right thoughts coming from God that do the elevating.

Thus the First Great Commandment, “Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, mind, and soul.”

  11. What a beautiful, amazing list!…But I have to ask where is the gratitude for family and loved ones on this list??…..Our fellow man seems to be left out?..Why?
I’m so very grateful for people in my life like my spouse and my beautiful three children, and my extended family and friends and neighbors!..With the addition of these I feel it would be a more “complete” list!
Also grateful for the grand beauty that is…”this world!”…would love to hear what anyone else’s thought is on this. Thank you Evan for your wonderful god messages they fill up all my empty places! : )

    1. Hi Kristen,

Thanks for commenting! I looked back at the list after reading your comment, and found family in many of the line items. For instance, “grateful for Love that never faileth.” That’s the kind of love that makes family work. That “my home is not a house built with hands…” not built on personal sense, opinion or fear, but on Love! That’s what makes family work. “…that I am awake to the voice of Good.” Awake to the voice of Good in each family member… And so on. What makes family work is in about every item, I believe. I think the purpose of the list is to lift thought up to God and see God as the source of all good, whether it shows up in family, in the park, in a business or in a piece of music. Start with God and the rest will flow.

  12. I’ve had this list for awhile and love it. And, of course, you can add to it. I found that making a gratitude list while I’m reading the Christian Science Binle Lesson can generate a similar list. So, as I read the Bible selections, I take a line or verse or phrase and generate a new list similar to the one above.

  13. Evan thank you for your comments, for Spiritview, for your work, for your devotion and dedication. God bless you and yours, and God bless all who follow Spiritview. You are loved!
