Watch out for the illusions

Wanna have a little fun?

Here’s a short video clip that reveals how wrong reports via the eyes can be.

I showed this illusion in static form to my Association a few years ago via Powerpoint, and I think some in the audience thought I was playing tricks on them. But there is no trick to it. What the eye sees and what really exists is opposite. The square appears lighter than the other because of the shadow the cylinder casts over it, which in turn deceives the eye into seeing the square lighter than it really is.

Christian Science is constantly revealing illusions of the physical senses. Disease is one of them. Jesus Christ understood this better than anyone. Right where the human eye saw disease, Jesus could see health, and his understanding of the difference enabled him to wake others up from the illusion too. We can do it too.

  1. Thanks, Evan! Very thought-provoking and insightful! (Amazing how different things look when you cast a little light on them!)

  2. Dear Evan, I am so glad about your post of today. Just a few weeks ago, I used some ‘illusion-pictures’ in Sunday School in order to show the pupils – and remind myself – of how our physical senses are not reliable!
Thank you for all you share!

  3. I had to overcome the “illusion” that I am dense! 🙂

After watching twice, I could not “see” any illusion.

So I went back and reread your explanation, Evan, then watched the video a third time.

Persistence — a desire to see and know the truth — paid off! I finally saw what I was supposed to see: the two little squares at the very end of the video, after being cut and placed above the “board” of squares, were equally dark.

Yes, truly amazing. And to think this lesson also taught me to see beyond — reject — the illusion that I am dense! 🙂 There’s no such “I AM” is there?

  4. Well anonymous #3, I had the same ‘problem’ but caught it the second time around!

Love this blog and all the comments!

It is the lesson for today!
