What are you watching

If you’d like to keep the body free of suffering, be sure to keep the thought governing that body free of suffering.

A divinely inspired consciousness of Truth and Love has the best effect on the body.

Fear, belief in disease, and sin, have a bad effect on the body.

Be wise about what you harbor in thought. Admit only thoughts that have a good effect on your thinking, and thus on the body governed by that thinking.

As Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Observe mind instead of body, lest aught unfit for development enter thought. Think less of material conditions and more of spiritual” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 419).

You’re always watching something. Be sure to watch metaphysically, rather than physically, to have a clear understanding of why things are happening the way they are happening.

Watch for God. Behold Truth. Fill up with love. Be sure to keep your gas tank of spiritual inspiration full and overflowing.

Heavenly thinking produces heavenly results. Hold your mental gaze to spiritual reality and reap the benefits. Watch for the good and stay well.

  1. What joy it is to awaken up these thoughts. Keep my thoughts on what is true and life giving. The sounds of joys and bells at this time of year is our signal to keep our thoughts on the divine. We begin with what we can hear in our thoughts that are pleasant and good for the self and from there it flows out ward to a world in need of good thoughts wrapping us all in the LOVE that is our gift to the world all around us each day.

  2. Such a helpful post, and resonates clearly with this amazing talk I listened to this morning where Mark encourages us to keep our ‘mental chalkboards’ free of anything that we don’t want to have manifest in our lives (like the common thought about disease and suffering):

    Thanks Evan!

  3. This is my last comment from yesterday.
Syl thanks for your offering help. My friend lives in Gdansk, Poland, but has a small house in the country which she is making available to anyone in need. She’s a professor at the university there and has listed her house with the authorities helping refugees. She doesn’t need any material help, but prayers are welcomed. She lived with me in So. Calif. many years ago It’s a long story, but I would briefly like to mention she got her PHD in English literature and her thesis was famous women authors. MBE was one of the authors she included and I was able to be of some assistance. She is not a Christian Scientist but well beloved by my family who are. Just a brief part of the long story. She was 19 when she came to the U.S. to help a man in the fishing industry in return for refining her English. She arrived late due to Visa problems and the fishing season had ended. He put her out on her own. She was hitchhiking into Boston and a gal gave her a ride who worked with my brother in the Publishing Society.

  4. Oh Lori I can see that your story is tremendously abbreviated, yet it points to the extraordinary repercussions of one tiny, seemingly innocuous, act of kindness… A lift in the car leads to a lifelong blessing, a blessing that is reverberating throughout the world!
Isn’t this what we are taught in Christian Science ? Not just so-called “random acts of kindness“ but knowing that we are always in our right place moving and acting and responding exactly at God‘s command, as Her listening servants!
As everyone else, I am so grateful for our SpiritView each day and this loving ,generous community of SpiritViewers! Love to you all

  5. “God is the only power”:

Looking for additional inspiration from yesterday’s Spirit View, I came across this article. This statement made me think of the picture of the child above: “In “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 124), “Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind.” Now, since adhesion belongs to Mind exclusively, error, the supposition of something opposed to Mind, can have no adhesive power. Spirit, God, possesses the only attraction; therefore God, good, alone attracts. The writer of Proverbs said, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This statement shows clearly the tenacity or adhesive power of good to hold and protect him, even after many days. These spiritual qualities—adhesion, cohesion, and attraction—support us in our God-given heritage of freedom from every claim of evil.

    1. Dear J, your comment is perfect for me. Thank you for sharing your insights about adhesion, attraction, etc… I had never thought of tenacity as adhesive power, for example; but I see it clearly now that you mentioned it.

      1. You’re welcome AD. Actually all the insights, except for referring to the article is from the article. I can’t take any credit. 🙂

  6. So grateful for every day’s post, and today especially for this one about what we are watching. So helpful. And also so grateful for all the very helpful and complementary comments Evan’s posts sparks.

  7. Hey Evan – can I please be unsubscribed from the email list. Tried multiple times but don’t seem to get through… thanks!

  8. What are you watching? The first thing I thought of when I read this is — TV. I am trying to drastically reduce my TV watching, as so much of it, especially the commercials, are constantly feeding into our thought material, error-filled viewpoints.

Matthew 6:22: “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.”

S&H p. 248: “Do you not hear from all mankind of the imperfect model? The world is holding it before your gaze continually. The result is that you are liable to follow those lower patterns, limit your life-work, and adopt into your experience the angular outline and deformity of matter models.. To remedy this, we must first turn our gaze in the right direction, and then walk that way. We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives”

  9. Thanks Rose for your comment on TV and for including such wonderful quotes. It’s so important to look in the right direction, as the quote says, as we balance staying informed on current events with not being disturbed by reports of violence, negativity, etc. I recently saw something sad on the news and thought “oh, I just can’t unsee that”… but then, instead of “unsee”, the word Unseen (God) came to thought. In “Unity of Good” (p. 7) Mary Baker Eddy writes, “An acknowledgment of the perfection of the infinite Unseen confers a power nothing else can.” This is so comforting to know that we can always use spiritual sense to “see” things from a higher (actually, the only real) vantage point. At lunchtime, as I was waiting for a take out order, they had Happy TV on the screen. Never heard of the app before, but it definitely made me laugh and smile. My kind of TV!

    1. There is also something called the Good News Network, a website with only positive stories from around the world, goodnewsnetwork.org

  10. Thank you all. Rose thank you. What are we watching. Let it be that we are watching the perfect model at all times. In doing so, we find peace..

  11. Evan’s gas-tank comment brought back an event about watching for the right things ..

My parents tried to bring me together with a same-aged cousin of the family who spent much of his time in jail / juvenile detention. We both dreaded the thought of having some sort of 17-year old “play date”.

We looked the same in rocker dress, hair, manner and so forth. But we were polar opposites. Discovered we both liked listening to Robin Trower music, so that’s a start.

Jumped in his Camaro and split. I’m watching him so as not to be corrupted, and he’s watching me so as not to be bible-thumped. Engaged in a little street-level talk. It was so surprising to just have fun together driving around.

Being respectful of me, with Robin Trower in the 8-track at a low level, his look of surprise when I told him to “turn that up man!” I’ll never forget. He saw something in me, and I in him.

We never became best buddies, but I know he and I both cherish that day of simple innocence looking beyond the surface of things and keeping God in view.

  12. Wow, you are right Evan, saying one is always watching something, and we must be sure to watch metaphysically, rather than physically. That is clear, and for me it means as Rose says, not to watch too much TV. I like to see films. But I think I must get more dominion over that and do something more reasonable like reading more metaphysical.
But I do not quite understand the rest of that longer sentence, namely “… to have a clear understanding of why things are happening the way they are happening” in relation the that whole sentence.
Could please someone explain it a bit to me as a German. I am very interested to understand the English better and better.

Thank you Evan for your always wonderful SpiritView Blog, so comforting and healing and learning! Thank you all for the links to relevant articles.

    1. Hi Uta. I’m not sure this will help, but there is a web site you can enter text in various languages and it will translate the text to another language. A link to the web site is below:

      https://translate.google.com/

I entered the English text below and it was translated into what is shown below in German.
      —English—
You’re always watching something. Be sure to watch metaphysically, rather than physically, to have a clear understanding of why things are happening the way they are happening.
      —German—
Du beobachtest immer etwas. Achten Sie darauf, eher metaphysisch als physisch zu beobachten, um ein klares Verständnis dafür zu haben, warum die Dinge so passieren, wie sie passieren.

I think Evan is just saying by this paragraph that we need to use spiritual sense to correctly understand why things are happening the way they are happening. For example, as Evan explained in his blog yesterday, the pain he was experiencing was caused by believing there was another power besides God (evil) embodied in a leader of a country that was doing evil. He realized that by using his spiritual sense. As he said, if he had instead just evaluated his pain physically, it would have been logical to try and treat the body physically to remove the pain (i.e., by taking pain medicine). But by using spiritual sense, he discovered there was a false belief that he was accepting as truth that was causing his pain and by removing that false belief from consciousness, the pain was eliminated from his experience. And that’s getting a “clear understanding of why things are happening the way they are happening.”

      1. Wow RH – that is so wonderfully inspired and very clearly explained! I really understand the whole sentence of Evan totally now, also because you took Evan’s testimony of yesterday as an example , how he found the right spiritual thoughts, which lead to the healing through “getting a clear understanding of why things are happening the way they are happening” Hope I rot it right so!
In any case I am deeply grateful to you for your loving and excellent declaration of my question!!!♡

        1. I’m glad you found what I shared helpful. I wish I could communicate in a second language as wonderfully as you communicate in English!!! Much love to you Uta!

          1. Thanks a lot dear RH, and lots of Love and to you, as well and Big Hugs!
I love English, it was my Hobby and I needed it at my work as a german/english secretary before I learnt CS nurse in England. ♡♡♡

  13. Thank you Evan + all
I made a reminder for me to continue to read your SpiritView and the various CS sources every day. Important to avoid the endless vast flood and volume of bad news.
