What goals do you serve?

March 13, 2013 | 12 comments

As I took my morning walk down our long driveway to get the newspaper yesterday, I asked myself, “Are you serving mortal mind or immortal Mind today?”
Great question! I retorted.
To rephrase the question and understand it better, I asked, “Are my goals focused on achieving a material outcome or a spiritual outcome?”
And so I made a list to get a grasp on the answer…
If I were to look at my day in terms of checking off a list of “to-do” items, I would be serving mortal mind.
If I were to see a long list of patients needing physical healing, who depended upon my prayers to recover, I would be serving mortal mind.
If I saw a need to earn money to make a living, I would be serving mortal mind.
If I counted the hours until the end of the day, I would be serving mortal mind.
If I had any material goal at all that I felt I needed to reach, I would be serving mortal mind.
However, to get out of mortal mind’s imprisoning grip…
If I saw my day as the unfoldment of God’s grace, and not as a limited number of hours to accomplish a long list of tasks, I would be serving divine Mind.
If I was beholding the perfect man of God’s creating, and when patients called for help, stayed clear as to the perfect man through every conversation and every email exchange, I would be serving divine Mind.
If I saw myself as already abounding with heavenly riches beyond any financial measurement of the human mind, I would be serving divine Mind.
If I understood life to be eternal, not temporal, and constantly rejoiced in the spiritual moment I was in, rather than watching a clock, I would be serving divine Mind.
If I had only spiritual goals before my gaze, spiritual desires impelling my actions, and spiritual views at the top of my mind, I would not be serving mortal mind; I would be serving divine Mind.
As I spiritualized my goals for the day, dropped the mortal “to-do” list and replaced it with the immortal “I am” list, I knew I was ready for a peaceful, productive, and happy place with God that day. And that’s what I received.
What goal-maker are you serving today? Is it mortal mind or immortal Mind? It’s your choice to make.

“No one can be loyal to two masters. He is bound to hate one and love the other, or support one and despise the other.” Matthew 6:24,JB Phillips

  1. Thanks for the inspiring thoughts – this has lifted me out of a limited mortal view of staff workload issues at work.

  2. Thank You Evan, I have been striving toward the wrong goal. I AM perfect just as he who made me perfect. My new to do list is to just remember that.

  3. Evan, one of your best sharings!…and I’ll likely feel the same way after the next blog because that’s often what I think each time I read your entries. Thanks so much for the clarity and uplift. You inspire us to new goal setting!

  4. I have one more to add to your list and that has to do with submitting comments to both ” SPIRIT VIEW” and “THE DAILY LIFT” C/S web sites. When I submitted these comments with the sense of boasting how good I am to have them accepted, and I can’t wait to show them off to friends and relatives, I am giving in to mortal mind and my own personal satisfaction. But when I submit them with the attitude of sincerely helping others, I am on the side of God and fullfuling a spiritual goal.

  5. this is certainly profound and really examines the intricacies and delicacies of how to separate the tares from the wheat. what I liked about your examples is it shows how cunning mortal mind is. something looks like a god thought but upon closer look, it is revealed it is mortal mind disguised as god. the deceptive serpent or wolf in sheeps clothing. mortal mind is smart but god is smarter.

  6. This pointer made me review my list to do today to be sure no mortal goal gets in the way. Once in a while mortal mind tries to suggest itself as a part of the unfoldment but I need to be alert to turn it down. The Psalmist sang “The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want” [ more good] because good already abounds is one thing I learned a few days ago.
Thank you so much Evan for an help to ALERTNESS TO DUTY.
