What is error?

January 19, 2021 | 26 comments

Error is a term used in Christian Science to describe anything and everything that would deny God’s power and presence.
It’s a mistake, a wrong point of view.

If you want to see what error is, look on page 498, of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

What do you see?

  1. Love this message! Error Is Nothing, No-thing. I was curious to check Page 498 in S&H. It is a blank page, just like the photo above which is a whole book of blank pages. That is what error amounts to — with all it’s huffing and puffing and shouting and drama– a big Zero. All is God, good. Our lives are filled with continuous pages brimming with the goodness of God. Let’s read that book.

“Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist [reject] all that is unlike good, God has made man capable of this….” (S&H p. 393)

    1. Love your comment, Rose. And thank you Evan! Love the purity and simplicity of a blank page. One of my first Sunday School lessons was the question,
“What is error?” and we had to turn to pg 498 for the answer. Great lesson!! The majestic glory of Truth, righteousness and justice is ALL and reflected by all!!

  2. How powerful to realize only “spiritual sense” can tell us what is true. “Material sense” does not know the truth so it cannot tell the truth. Evan it is such a gift to have SV to declare the truth. A truth our spiritual sense can discern, understand, and celebrate.

  3. I love this! And now I recall that I have used it in my Sunday School classes over the years.

Thank you, Evan, for the reminder!

  4. Hahahahahahahahah … NO-thing !!! very clever, love it — hit the mark!!
thank you Evan ! You truly made me laugh out loud … felt good!!

  5. Brilliant Evan!
‘ Aye darkling sense, Arise go hence
    Our God is Good!
False fears are foes, Truth tatters those
    When Understood!’ Hymn 161
    Love to all❣️

  6. First, if you see that error means erroneous or false, unreal, a lie, then one can see that it is actually nothing. And as I understand, Evan wants us to teach and see that “error is nothing”. And that is shown on page 498. Rose says, that in her Textbook (the English one) this page is blank. However in the German translation of Science and Health, p. 498 contains a verse from Revelation without a page number and the next page is 501 Chapter GENESIS. There is no page 500.
Evan thank you very much for today’s humerous SpiritView, yet having a deeper meaning of error’s nothingness! It is a very helpful lesson and I am grateful for it!♡

  7. How does one get Rose’s book?
    Thank you!
Let “nothing” ever get in your way!
    All is Love, Love, Lovingkindness!

  8. This reminds me of a citation in S&H:-

“Error is unreal because untrue. It is that which seemeth to be and is not.” (SH 472:18-19)

There is no error in God’s kingdom, so whatever seems to be going on which is not
good, we can know that it is not from God, and therefore is nothing.

  9. Satan/carnal mind/bullier/accuser/blamer/liar/confuser/demoralizer/hypnotizer/mortal mind/NOTHING trying to be something!

    Thank you, Evan!!!

  10. Check me on this. In Science, Truth is Nothing. Error is anything appearing as something– good, bad, or otherwise. Only error realized as Truth is Nothing. To say, error is nothing is neither wisdom or Science. The message of the Christ is to prove the nothingness of error. Unless where you stand, only Divinity is; your entire human experience is error. And when you realize the Truth you will know the meaning of God is All– because what is “thought” to be me is nothing in Truth. There is no personal sense of Life. Stay in the Spirit of Truth.

    1. Thanks for the link to this sweet children’s story Kirsten, It really made me smile; so simple and true. Error tries to disguise itself as our own thoughts, but it fails again and again. Loved the image of Albert the troublemaking zebra, disguised as a black horse by putting mud over his stripes, but to no avail. God helps us see through the disguise.

    2. Thank you Kirsten for the Link to that sweet story! It teaches us a lot how to behave to each other as child of divine Love, our God!♡

    3. Thank you Rose and Uta. Yes, instead of what the article states;

“Chris could see now that error—the name Christian Science gives to wrong thoughts—is the troublemaker and needs to be chased out. Like Albert, error needs a disguise so people will listen to it, so it usually comes disguised as our very own thinking. If we’re foolish enough, we may do what it says. So it was error that tried to get Chris and Randy to fight! It wasn’t really what they wanted to do at all. They really loved each other.”

      What about this;

The (choose your political party or race or ?) could see now that error—the name Christian Science gives to wrong thoughts—is the troublemaker and needs to be chased out. Like (any lie), error needs a disguise so people will listen to it, so it usually comes disguised as our very own thinking. If we’re foolish enough, we may do what it says. So it was error that tried to get (choose your political party or race or?) and (choose the other political party or race or ?) to fight! It wasn’t really what they wanted to do at all. They really loved each other.
      Hugs! 🙂

      1. Precisely!! We really do naturally love each other. God, who is Love, made it that way. I pray to know that all “sides” of any and every “conflict” can see and understand what you have described. It would be the healing balm that is so needed. Thank you!

    4. Thanks for sharing, Kirsten. Every Sunday School teacher, parent and grandparent should have it!!

    5. Hello Kirstin, Uta and Rose, and Cathryn,

I thought you might like to know that “The troublemaker” did go out all over the world as a pamphlet, “Albert the Zebra” published in 1972. I wrote it almost 50 years ago, and how amazing it is remembered and applied so well to today’s issues. I left a message to Diane re church changing. All the best to you all.

  11. Years ago someone said to me “The name of every disease in the world is on page 498 of Science and Health.” Nothing. Not in God’s vocabulary.
