Why study Christian Science?

July 13, 2021 | 31 comments

With the long list of demands one may face in their schedule each day, why set time aside to study Christian Science?

Christian Science explains how the universe works. It explains how to find health, how to live happy, how to demonstrate abundance, how to get along with others, and how to live with meaning and purpose.

If you face lack, Christian Science takes you to supply. If you face disease, Christian Science reveals health. If you face conflict, strife, and despair, Christian Science leads you to resolution, peace, and love.

Christian Science is an all-encompassing truth that explains the unreality of evil, the omnipotence of good, and our rights to the best God has to offer. When we honestly live what it teaches, we experience its blessings.

When you study Christian Science, you are taking the fast route to success that matters. You are doing what helps the most.

  1. Thank you Evan – as a life long Christian Scientist I have found Christian Science to be a strong secure foundation which never fails.

  2. EXACTLY! I cannot imagine what my life would have been like without CS. I don’t even know how people who are not Christian Scientists, manage!

    1. Exactly how I feel, Diane! Christian Science is my lifeline and I truly don’t know how anyone could live without it!

    2. Same, Diane – I am so grateful to my mother and her mother for shining the light on this glorious Truth full of riches, yet to be discovered!

    3. It seems to me that Christian Science is the most direct way to live a life that is happy and secure. It provides freedom from all kinds if evils. However, the Christ has been around in the way that met peoples’ needs in the past, and great thinkers and doers have had what CS provides. This means to me that we have the most essential ideas in common with everyone.
Those who are not followers of CS can teach us about its basic elements because they have the Christ already in them. Mortal mind would like us to use labels and limit good to certain individuals and situations, but that’s not God’s plan. All good is from God and is expressed universally.

  3. So beautifully stated, Evan. Thank you. I too am a life long Christian Scientist and don’t know what I would have done when faced with trials and sorrow. To God belongs all praise and glory.

Very grateful for what everyone shares on this platform.

    Blessings to all.

  4. Hi friends, what is ment with “immunity dept” (from yesterday’s SpiritView ).
Could any one explain a bit, please?

    1. Hi Uta. It helps to understand by reading the last sentence of Evan’s:

” Have no fear of an “immunity debt.” With Spirit, you have an immunity surplus”.

That says to me that we don’t have any lack of immunity, because God is keeping us immune from something that is not real by His ever-present protection – therefore we have an abundant supply of immunity – absolute protection from our loving Father at all times and in all places.

I hope this helps. With love. Maggie

        1. I also got from it we – don’t owe sickness anything( we don’t have to give it reality)! We are indebted to God who gives us all good!

    2. Dear Uta, Maggie has given a very good response. You can also refer to the first two paragraphs of yesterday’s post, where Evan cites the article in the Wall Street Journal which describes what is ‘immunity debt’.
Maggie’s answer is just perfect in order to reverse this concept. Thank you Evan and Maggie!

      1. Dear Beatrice, my request to help me with clarification relates to yesterday’s wonderful post of Evan. Thank you very much! I understand it now thanks to the explanation of you and Maggie – with Love Uta♡

  5. Wow dear Evan, that is.so true and wonderful! What the former SpiritView friends say today, to be a life long Christian Scientist. I’m not quite sure but I think I am too. I came to Sundayschool with 9 years. And I can also say, without CS what would happen with me. I was not at all an angel in my youth. Although I didn’t read the lesson really, Sundayschool taught me the divine truths in CS, though. And I am utmost grateful to this!
Evan says, CS teaches how the Universe works. Yes that is a blessing, as CS teaches that the Universe is entirely spiritual, lacking nothing. This truth is comforting and healing fears about what happens seemingly around the globe. Fire, water and heath and other incidents seem to destroy our loved and beautiful earth. But we find comfort in the Holy Bible that God made everything, the whole earth including all life on it and including man to His image and likeness. And God found it very good! But He created it spiritual which is undestroyable and perfect forever. And Mrs. Eddy explains it so clear and thorough in Science and Health. I write this because I just saw a docu film about some catastrophs happening on our Planet. In CS I can pray to be aware of the divine Truth. That is very comforting and helpful!.
Today I know and practise what Evan says in the last paragraph in today’s SV. And it is very blessing for us all.
Thank you very very much, Evan for helping us with your wonderful spiritual views!♡

    1. Hello Uta,
There is a wonderful article titled
      https://journal.christianscience.com/issues/2020/6/138-06/all-figures-are-drawn-on-infinity by Barbara Cook Spencer
I found it most helpful in so many ways, the second to the last paragraph is very insightful when thinking about the earth, its resources and its future. We know the definition of earth (S&H 585: 5) says in part: “…a type of eternity and immortality, which are likewise without beginning or end.”
Below I have pasted a quote from Spencer’s article
” In divinity’s uninterrupted embrace of humanity, where heaven’s law of good is the only real law on earth, all useful elements (like water or minerals, for example) could be discovered, or simply appear without process (in unimaginable quantities and of superlative quality), in places mankind has never before imagined them to be. And they would be brought forth without harming the environment. Science and Health explains, “Creation is ever appearing, and must ever continue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source” (p. 507). ” Barbara Cook Spencer

          1. Hi Virginia and Beatrice, thank you very very much for the link to Spencer’s article. It is very helpful! It is on “spiritual infinite supply of God”. – so helpful – it goes deep into the divine Truth -wonderful! Hugs to you both!♡

  6. Thank you, Evan, for this beautiful post! It seems to me that it goes perfectly with a recent article in the Christian Science Sentinel ‘Don’t skip the “meat ant potatoes”‘ by Debra Brandt (C.S. Sentinel, July 12, 2021): https://sentinel.christianscience.com/shared/view/22bz64bvnxc?s=e
As others who commented, I am so very grateful for the teachings of this wonderful Science Mary Baker Eddy has given us, for the Bible Lessons, the periodicals and all The Mother Church is providing, for Sunday school and church, and not least for this blog. What a privilege to be able to study Christian Science! We truly are blessed.

    1. Thank you Beatrice for sharing this wonderful article. I loved Debra’s statement: “I chose my path based on a knowledge of God as Spirit and of my identity as His spiritual likeness, as stated in the first chapter of Genesis.” To know that we have an unbroken connection with the infinite is so comforting.

  7. Thank you Evan for the brief but powerful insight as why we are studying Christian Science. I will print this post and keep it handy as a reminder why I read and ponder the daily Bible-Lessons. Thanks to all who commented too, daily study is the most needful and best thing we can do each day for ourselves and the world.

  8. Thank you Beatrice for the Meat and Potatoes article.
I have found daily study to be very important in my life these days. I was born into CS and although I didn’t study daily the whole lesson as a young adult I always had it at hand to turn to when needed. Like Uta my Sunday school years gave me a foundation to hold onto. I now know the importance of each morning spiritual breakfast and snacks throughout the day. I am grateful for all of the support I get from Spirit View Evan and all the SV family.

  9. Evan, what a great paragraph of why a Christian Scientist studies the lessons! All the good encompassed in there is a terrific way to share with family or inquiring friends why one reads the lesson and even digs deeper and then applies the principles. It’s short, to the point and could re-inspire one who has been studying but drifted off a bit. Thanks so much for these daily spiritual viewpoints 🙂

  10. Great post today, Evan. For me Christian Science represents a way to appropriately assess the experiences we are engaged at the time. Mary Baker Eddy declare that ; “Life is, always has been, and ever will be independent of matter; for Life is God, and man is the idea of God, not formed materially but spiritually, and not subject to decay and dust.” in this week’s lesson. That has inspired me to realize that truth is independent upon man’s perception of it This inspiration has lead me to realize that we need some way to distinguish truth from error in our perceptions. Christian Science study guides us in the way to do that correctly.

  11. As a material Mother, I do everything possible to love and protect my children. They are constantly in my thought what ever the circumstance. Occasionally it appears that I haven’t the right answer to hand…
Our Father/Mother God IS eternal Love and protection, Life with abundance, Mind directing us, with NEVER any evidence of negativity….always at hand.
How I love to have Christian Science to help me wipe away the human mist, revealing this universe et al in its Divine magnificence. I am so grateful for this subject and all contributions ..Thank you Evan and Everyone .❣️

  12. The question posed by Evan today is Why Study Christian Science. I study Christian Science because it reveals and explains to me Life as it truly is, the spiritual reality, the abundant life in God — not the flimsy material surface appearance of things in which error says it’s normal for existence to be difficult, painful, harsh and lacking good. What a gift and a comfort it is to be taught to see through these lies that claim God can be absent from our lives. I agree with the other SpiritView friends who say it is hard to imagine how people live without these truths to guide their days. Very grateful indeed.

  13. Studying Christian Science is uplifting to be sure. When I think of the information we are privileged to receive through this study, it is mind boggling. I am grateful for all those who follow these teachings.
