Watch what you say

July 9, 2026 | 23 comments

Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear.

~ Ephesians 4:29, RSV

May everything you say serve a healing purpose.

May everything you say cause a positive response.

May everything you say inspire thought to loftier places.

May everything you say speak well of you, revealing your kindness, thoughtfulness and care.

May everything you say build others up and not tear them down.

May everything you say make people feel loved.

May everything you say bless those who hear you.

  1. Dear Evan, your expansion of the verse with these inspired ideas is beautiful, Thank you for such practical, yet simple ways to demonstrate grace.

  2. Thank you Evan for inspiring passage and thoughts to guide us through our day. So grateful for SpiritView

  3. Wonderful spiritual focus today on an interpretation I would apply to…’’give us grace for today’’…from The Lords Prayer.
    I remember my Dad saying to me, at age 15ys , about to take the train to the West End of London where I was starting my first job in a bank….’’remember, engage brain before opening mouth!’’ He was not a Christian Scientist but he knew the importance of Grace.
    Thank you so much Evan for Spirit View❣️

    1. How I wish I had had someone so wise around to say these things to me. I rarely engaged brain before speaking I seem to recall. I bumbled through and made many mistakes. I came to London from the North when quite young with no guidance I was aware of. However I was rescued from difficult and even life threatening situations on several occasions, so my Father was looking out for me even though I was unaware of it. I found CS accidentally when quite grown up and it continues to bless and protect. I am so grateful.

  4. Someone once told me that if we watch what we think, we will not have to watch what we say. Keep our thoughts pure.

  5. Spirit View is great every day but today it is even greater. I really need this.
    Thank you Even for all you are doing.

  6. From NJK
    Thank you, Evan- so inspiring , as always!
    I find it helpful to ,also, everywhere the word “say” is, to put in the word “think”.

  7. Thank you Evan, With seven of these ideas, one to express and put into practice each day of the week. Wonderful comments too, many thanks everyone.

    This was a comment very kindly left by Rose yesterday:
    “Also want to mention that there was a comment left late yesterday (8/7) on SV from LOL that I think we should address. Sounds like some hurt and confusion we could help with. They had a question about not seeing instantaneous healings in CS anymore and wondered if their past issues may have something to do with blockng it. Perhaps some SV love would help. Thanks.”

    I wrote down a quote that refers to healing quickly, but I’m not sure it answers LOL’s question… So sorry, I forgot to put down the author.
    “Real things are ideas, and exist unchanged in Mind, in spite of the fluctuations of material perception. Material things are only material beliefs, or lying thoughts about spiritual substance. The metaphysical sense of matter imparted by Christian Science enables its students to heal quickly, since the healing becomes a simple process of right knowing. Because there is no matter to change, alter, or improve material conditions. Right thinking proves the material beliefs about the universe to be untrue, and brings to light the true concept, which is a perfect, harmonious spiritual universe of ideas.”

  8. I love this Evan – so clearly put.

    Here are the last two verses of a poem by Jill Gooding which came to me:

    Love with a heart of tenderness
    Your enemies and friends;
    However hard this may appear
    It’s the quality that mends.
    For Love is God in action,
    A presence that is felt;
    A healing and a saving power
    That will all discord melt.

    So lean, and let, and love,
    This is the balanced Way;
    It’s free from self-will, pressure, stress,
    It welcomes in God’s day;
    The leaning is so gentle,
    The letting is so free,
    And loving is the only way
    To think, and speak, and be.

    —Jill Gooding

  9. Thank you, Evan, for these reminders–I once heard a TV Evangelist warn folks similarly yet I’ve caught myself forgetting to ‘think before speaking’ at times!
    On another topic, Evan, the earthquake in Venezuela has been much in the news and I would so appreciate your input on our response; my very first thought was what Mrs. Eddy said about the Civil War–that it never happened; I’ve strived to stick with that despite all the seeming evidence to the contrary. Perhaps our dear SV friends could weigh in with their own prayerful approach to this?

    1. Hi Nan,
      Per Venezuela, yes, they need our love and prayers and support in all ways to master what they’ve been facing. I pray for every citizen there to feel and know the comforting presence of God which can bring calm to thought and help people see and know what to do that brings the fastest recovery. I pray to know that divine Mind’s infinite resources of understanding and wisdom bless every citizen there with the ideas they need to rebuild and get back on their feet. I pray to see the empowered, strengthened, restored, helped and healed!
