Awake from spiritual dullness

The words “raise…from spiritual dulness,” caught my attention when reading the below passage. Referring to Jesus Christ, Mary Baker Eddy wrote,

“His resurrection was also their resurrection. It helped them to raise themselves and others from spiritual dulness and blind belief in God into the perception of infinite possibilities” Science and Health, p. 34.

Spiritual dullness is sleepy thinking. It’s a listless state of thought that fails to get anything significant accomplished. It could be manifest as going through the routine of studying truth but not gaining lofty inspiration, attending church but leaving the services no better, or praying and not feeling inspired. It is apathy, indifference, and metaphysical neglect. Spiritual dullness is an enemy to spiritual progress and is definitely a trait of mortal mind to stay awake from and conquer!

The tricky side of spiritual dullness is that people in a dull state of thought often don’t realize it. They adopt a so-so attitude about their spiritual studies and fail to question why they aren’t making more progress. They accept lack of inspiration and healing as normal. But this is not the case! It’s not normal to get stuck in error and fail to progress. It’s normal to stay awake and advance! This is the way God made you.

Eddy also wrote, “Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good,” Science and Health, p. 393. This command reminds us that we can do something if not making the progress we’re entitled to. We can “rise in the strength of Spirit,” to resist any suggestion of lack. We can demand and expect daily inspiration and healing. It’s right to experience spiritual growth on a regular basis.

Outlaw mental dullness! Do not accept it as a standard in your life. Know your rights as a child of God to be inspired and abounding with joy, delight and awe over all the blessings God envelopes you with every moment of your existence.

Strive for inspiration and gain it. God is sending it your way! Sleep no more. Awake, put on the Mind of Christ, avidly seek the treasures of Truth and claim them.

Life with God is awesome. There is never a dull moment. It is full of new frontiers, fresh inspiration to receive, and boundless adventure to engage. Waste not a moment more. Strive for it and thrive!

  1. YAY, thanks Evan. This made me think of this citation from Hymn 18:1…. Then up and be doing, though cowards may fail; Thy duty pursuing, dare all and prevail. A great push for me.

  2. This message is so refreshing Evan, and I thank you.
I prove this often and know I must go on proving it.
It is our divine right to be free from any sluggish attitudes
and I expect to demonstrate my God-given freedom.
Warm appreciation to all who contribute here.

  3. I really appreciate these. They come just when I need them. And thanks SpiritView Fan. Looking forward to checking out that link.

  4. Yes! A great splash of cold water on the face. Thanks! We’re climbers, and grateful thoughts are the rungs. We’re not coasting down inevitable decline. Rising is inevitable! “Rising higher and higher from a boundless basis” (SH 258)
    Grateful for these encouraging words.

  5. Thank you Evan. I knew that I had a problem, but I didn’t realize that I was stuck in spiritual dullness. Thank you for opening my thoughts to be more alert. I am now “rising in the strength of Spirit and resisting all that is unlike good.”

  6. Peace is unimaginable
    wealth of the highest order
    Where the Divine unseen
    merges with the seen
    and births an expanded
    sense of possibility
    within a state of Grace
    and Heart of Gratitude
    and Mind of knowingness
    Free of doubt and fear

  7. Thanks Spiritveiw Fan for that very helpful article you gave us the reference to. I also wanted to share what helps me as well. I frequently pray with the Twenty-third Psalm in this way…Divine Love is my Shepherd I shall not want for joy, revelation, inspiration or healing in my spiritual work today.

  8. FABULOUS jarring the consciousness!! Onward Christian Soldiers. No apathy, but thoughtful ACTION. Great comments. Thanks, all.

  9. As I lay in this hospital bed awaiting the next step, I am truly grateful to know and feel God’s love for me and His infinite protection!

  10. WOW, Evan, this was just what I needed this morning when feeling discouraged with the ineffectiveness of my prayers and study.
    THANKS!

  11. Thank you Evan for another great and healing lesson.
It could not have been more timely and so so needed.
This morning when I had to get up from bed, it seemed so dull for me to get up and get ready for the day.

Then I read this eye opening gorgeous SpiritView and prayed for God`s guidance. Then when I got through the lesson sermon and it seemed as if I do not get any inspirations as Evan said, I read it over and over until it feels as if n o w I got the deeper meaning out of the truth in the lesson sermon. Therefore I am always grateful.

After I rose from this dulness in the morning, I was in the position to make a longer car drive to do several necessary settlements including a bigger shopping.

Evan, I was so grateful having been able to do all that after a thorough study of today`s SpiritView followed by reading the lesson!

And thank you all for your so helpful and lively comments! 🙂

  12. Thank you, Evan. I look forward to these posts everyday. I had a “wake-up” call this week that has caused me to watch my thinking closely, and I’m so grateful for it and for what it is bringing into my life. Thanks again to all!

  13. Very timely for me – thank you, Evan for addressing this important topic!

I especially love this statement: “Know your rights as a child of God to be inspired and abounding with joy, delight and awe over all the blessings God envelops you with every moment of your existence.” What a mental picture! Not just that God showers blessings down upon us, but that we are completely surrounded by and held in them, like a warm blanket. No way to escape them! And no part of us left uncovered! So comforting, and a great antidote to the temptation to fall into spiritual dulness.

  14. Hi Evan, Great point.
In Science and Health pg.167 ” The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way.” On page 180, “When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible.”

  15. Thanks Evan, this is just the right answer to my prayer today; “Father, open Thou mine eyes that I may see the mistake that I ignore.” And also to SpiritViewFan for the emphasized article. It really means a lot to me! Again thank you.
