Be a healing presence

June 1, 2020 | 28 comments

If you turn on a small light in a big dark room, that little light becomes the center of attention in that room. All eyes turn toward its glow and every heart hungering for some brightness in their space feels a degree of hope and joy from seeing a lit spot before them.

The same rule applies to the human experience.

In everyday life, there are many “dark rooms” around us that beg for light.

Fear over the pandemic is one of those dark rooms today. Worry about health, conflict in families, stress over finances, feeling depressed and despondent, are a few other “dark rooms,” that people find themselves stuck in on occasion. But you can help change that. You can bring light to those dark rooms. You can be a healing presence that renews hope and lifts thought to a better place.

If listening to a neighbor voice fear over the pandemic, you can bring your understanding of God to bear upon that fear by assuring them that this pandemic will be mastered. That it is not going to get the better of us but will be conquered and left behind.

If in the middle of a family conflict, you can be the listening ear and the compassionate responder that defuses the tension and moves thought toward more harmony and peace between family members.

If conversing with a friend who is drowning in despair, you can help that friend remember all the blessings they have to be grateful for. Your positive spiritual outlook can be the life raft that saves them from sinking further.

When we let Love and Truth lead our thought, we can be the bright light a dark room needs. We can make a positive difference with our prayers and our desire to see good triumph over evil, love triumph over hate, and for peace to replace fear.

We do not have to grope around in darkness ourselves or be held hostage to someone else’s darkness. We can live true to our spiritual selves and shine the presence of God wherever we go and in whatever we do. We can be a healing presence.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, RSV).

  1. Light
    What is light?
    Brightness, openness to sight, illumination, clarity, directing path,
    color or not, joy, action/activity.
    What is openness?
    Receptivity, no barriers, no resistance.
    How does light remove darkness?
    By being present, increasing intensity,
    Peaceful appearance!

  2. Thank you Evan. I seem to be experiencing some of those dark rooms with the situation I am in, so your message for today is just what I needed and so very helpful.

  3. Thank you very much Evan for Love in action, and reminding us to do so.
    A friendly, kind word to a neighbor, Family member, friend; a dead of neighborly love is a healing aspect in today`s special times and ever.
    How lovely and freeing is this Hymn from our CS Hymnal – # 179:

    “Love one another, – words of revelation;
    Love frees from error`s thrall, – Love is liberation.
    Love`s way the Master trod;
    He that loves shall walk with God.
    Love is the royal way.”

    Love knows no evil, neither shade of sadness;
    Love casts out every fear, lifts the heart to gladness.
    Love heals our every ill,
    All the law does Love fulfill.
    Love is our answered prayer.

    Love now is dawning over every nation;
    showing true brotherhood, publishing salvation,
    Love bids all discord cease,
    Conquering hate, enthroning peace,
    Love, Love alone is power.”

    What a comforting, healing and freeing Hymn.
    “Christ, Truth and Love is the light of the world”

    1. One of my favorite Hymns Uta. Thank you for posting it. I remember the practitioner who helped my Mother with my healing as a child who eventually became my Sunday School teacher. How she expressed herself full of love and warmth, kindly to us children. This is a very important aspect of Christian Science and indeed our mission to help others see that expression as a necessary component of the power of Love to heal and bring freedom from whatever misguided thought approaches us during our day.

  4. A helpful reminder to encourage neighbours during pandemic times. Thanks Evan.

  5. Thank you Evan, and thank you Uta for posting that Hymn #179
    I had been feeling overwhelmed, was feeling depressed and despondent, I’m so grateful to God for the angel messages that have come to me over the last few days and knowing that I’m grateful for God at every turn, She leads the way, the light at the end of a dark tunnel. God is my refuge and strength. I am truly blessed,.

  6. Thank you Evan! There’s many a time when your blog sparks a spiritual light into any dark rooms I experience. So a big heartfelt thank you to you and all the commenters who share their thoughts here and links to beautiful material from other Christian Scientists. God is lighting our paths NOW!❣️

  7. Thank you Evan, Uta, and all for sharing your light this morning! I awoke with the angel thought, “See everyone, including myself, through the eyes of Love. And God saw (is seeing) everything that S/He had made, and behold, it was (is) very good.”

  8. Thank you Evan and All. Uta, thank you for sharing the hymn with us and for your consistent daily sharing to this blog! And Josef’s description of the practitioner that helped his family struck a chord with me:

    How she expressed herself full of love and warmth

    Thank you Josef. I too have known practitioners and church members that just seemed to express a serene calm love under all situations. Last week there was this citation in the C.S. Bible Lesson from page 403 of S&H:

    You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being.

    Perhaps that’s the attitude we need in order to maintain our serenity. That citation made me think of the attitude we have when going to see a magician’s act. The magician might saw someone in half during their act but at no time do we REALLY believe someone is actually being sawed in half even though our material senses tell us that is happening. Similarly when hearing reports of lack, evil, disease, etc., we can remain calm, all the while knowing that God would never allow those things to happen. We can cling to God’s idea of a perfect harmonious creation in the caring hands of our Father/Mother, God and that will bring healing to whatever appears discordant. Then we too can go about our daily duties immersed in that love of God and able to express that love to others, patiently and generously, joyous, and with a consciousness “full of love and warmth”.

  9. I was in a funk last evening in response to terrible things that have went on in number of cities in our country and another reason so I sat down it started marking science and health portion of our Lassen coming up. As I am first reader at our Society. As I am marked each I read them and it seems like practically every single line brought healing to my feelings at the time I also chose the hymns for next Sunday hymns that I I thought went so well with the sermon after that I was much better and I’m so grateful for Christian Science! Thanks to everyone’s comments Spirit view is morning tradition with me.

    1. Evan & fellow Spiritview adherents, thank you all for your expressions of love & support. Being one with the light of Love, helps all mankind. One candle in the so-called darkness can lead the way. Each day I’m grateful for each clear, vision that is given me. Love to all…

  10. There is a wonderful gospel hymn, Take your Candle and go Light your World, that is on Youtube that I love to listen to, as it helps me realize that we are the Light of the world and this Light of God that is within us shines brightly to bless all mankind. Thanks, Evan, and all who contribute to Spiritview to shed light onto our world.

    1. Thank you Bea for sharing this gospel hymn! Certainly sends an upbeat, loving message that is so needed everywhere!

  11. From our daily Bible-lesson 9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Matt 5:9.
    And we know that we are God’s precious children

  12. Thank you Evan and commenters for the lovely ideas expressed here. Uta, what a wonderful hymn – so needed right now. Thank you! A neighbor had posted a picture of Devonte Hunt hugging a police officer during a protest back in 2014. A 12 year old child who understood exactly what was needed in the situation.

  13. Evan, your comments about not being “held hostage to someone else’s darkness”, really stood out to me this morning. I have been watching the reports on TV with the intent to pray to have a better understanding of man and his relationship to God and to make “conscientious protests for Truth!” right in the face of all the media’s attention. There are times when the delusion/illusion of hate, riots, pandemic dis-ease, would want to appear to be real because it is spoken of so often. But isn’t that the way of animal magnetism constantly getting in our face?
    To really comprehend that all of this is nothing but a delusive sense of life that could possibly contain those negative elements is the work we have to do. and it’s extremely easy when we turn away from all the hullabaloo and just embrace God and his idea of man. Then there is nothing but peace and no darkness at all! Thank you Evan, (and all you contributors!) for your spiritual sense ❤️

  14. Thanks much. I have the opportunity and desire to be that bright light for some dark rooms, and your examples and encouragement give me confidence I can be and am that an expression of that light.

  15. In choir we sing the song “This Little Light of Mine I’m Going To Let It Shine“ . We end shows at nursing homes singing it. The audience sings along
    with us. We all feel like we’ve made the world a happier place. Funny thing is you can’t get the lyrics or the tune out of your mind. That’s the good thing. I’m hoping I’ve programmed your thought to stay filled with love and light for a long wonderful time! Sing out!

  16. the quote from Matthew was my choice when I named my children many years ago. I just crossstiched it for my nephew’s baby’s birthday gift. I will read this again.
    I put little solar lights in three of my trees on my property. They have been there for years. I also have an electric candle that goes on when it gets dark. Light has always brought me joy and comfort. I always hope someone who drives or walks by at night feels comforted by these lights each evening.
    When I pull into the driveway from work in the winter, they are just starting to come on. When my granddaughter leaves our house in the evening and sees them on she claps for joy. Light does have that effect on us.

  17. Light, always fills all space. it just takes an expression from us that comes directly from God.
    Yesterday a man asked me if what he was doing would count him in good stead to enter Heaven.
    He was laboring, planting lavender plants for the non-profit, Living and Learning. It’s a project to give autistic termed individuals identity in the work a day world. Giving them a sense of purpose and fellowship..
    I thought why did he ask me? I never met the man before and still do not know his name.
    My response seemed to give him some peace. A light if you understand, in his effort to be charitable.
    I told him he was already there in heaven, looking at the wonderful planting in fertile ground on a very pleasant day. Among other’s of the same mind. Being loving, kind and Christian.
    Practicing the Sermon on the Mount.
    I told him God is already with us, right there in the field. And that he’d not have to consider any different event than harmony,.
    When inspired by Christian Science, expression flows from Mind to His subjects. And as transparencies for Truth, we can and must comfort those and improve upon time honored beliefs.
    And it blesses us as we do God’s work. Lighting that candle in the darkness and putting it on a bushel!
    Thank all of you and Uta for the reminder of hymn #179, God’s comforting poems are always going through my thoughts. Especially in the hour of my needs. And the world needs this message. As do we all. Peace….
