“Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person.”

“Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person.”
This is really interesting in light of Jesus’ healing. In one case he laid his hands on the bent over woman, declaring her freedom, and she was freed. Mary Baker Eddy discovered that seeing the spiritual meaning of material terms unlocks the healing power of the Word. The spiritual meaning of ‘hand’ is ability, capability, power. Jesus hands were his grasp of God’s all-power, and ability to cast out the lies of evil or disease — evil’s powerlessness to harm God’s child. I always read the passage as, “he laid HIS hands on HER” — in other words, he recognized that HIS understanding of God’s all-power was HER understanding, and the minute she glimpsed that, and the powerlessness of the disease to hold her in bondage, she was free!
So here’s this wonderful translation, reminding us that God’s capability is something we reflect and can share, blessing anyone in need. Wow. Thank you!
We need this reminder often. So many times when I have needed help, someone, maybe someone I least expected help from, came forward with just what I needed. We are God’s reflection and we best reflect God when we care enough to help someone in need. Thank you for the reminder
Thank you so much for this, Evan, and for your comment, Diane! So many people believe that the “laying on of hands” is what Jesus did to heal and they practice this today as a Christian method of Healing. So Grateful that we are learning in Christian Science that matter has no power to heal matter. It’s the spiritual power of the Word, of Truth, that Heals!
What a powerful thought-starter for me this week after a quick review of my day ahead! I saw the wording in this translation “someone who DESERVES your help” and thought “wait a minute – is that according to MY judgement of their need or worthiness?” It drove me back to my usual NKJ where I read a more familiar (to me) “Do not withhold good (note to self: don’t mentally block or interfere with God’s law of Good) from those TO WHOM IT IS DUE (to self: who else but all of God’s thoughts, ideas and reflection??!), when it is in the power of your hand to do so” (to self: ability to understand the omnipresence, omnipotence and omniscience of Goodness).
Then I studied the context – the verse preceeding – “For the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.” Love never fails us! Thank you so much!
There are 2 people I help. (1) is a blind woman who escaped from one of Adolph Hitler’s death camps. I help her through the telephone by letting her hear the many Articles & a Lectures from JSH ON LINE and one of my Nurse Aides who I let read the Bible Lesson without judgement. They asked me and I reciprocated. Whom am I to judge? I am still lerning.
Thanks Evan for this Bible verse and thank you to everyone who has commented!
In the biographies I’ve read of Mrs. Eddy there are accounts of times when she asked her students to spiritually translate Bible verses. It’s as if that tradition is being repeated today via this blog! Very helpful…thanks again!
Thanks, diane, for your inspiration of “HIS” hands not Jesus’ hands. It clarifies a misconception many people have regarding the laying of hands.
Thank you Diane, for making it so clear that not only are the hands God’s, but that “Her” understanding is of God also. So my understanding -and all His children- is of God too. This is eye-opening and very powerful.
