Here’s a thought-provoking article printed in the New York Times last week, written by an author whose grandfather was a Christian Science practitioner and also a survivor of the Titanic.
"Beating the odds" on the Titanic

What a beautiful testimony! Thank you so much for sharing this article! Angels are always with us to save us. Just as in the Bible with Lot and his family. Angels FORCED them to leave the town, when they hesitated.
With gratitude for this post,
Béatrice
I love this story! Thank you for sharing.

There was another Christian Scientist on the Titanic who survived, Lieut. C. H. Lightoller. His story appeared in the October 1912 Christian Science Journal. I find it so interesting that both CS survivors, apparently unbeknownst to each other, prayed with the 91st Psalm, and each was saved in his own unique way.
Yes, in addition to the 1912 Journal testimony by Lightoller, there is this Sentinel testimony in the December 20, 1913 issue by Lawrence Beesley, the grandfather of the writer of the New York Times article. Here is the link to the Sentinel article which is equally inspiring and fascinating:

Thanks for this article.
Here’s a link to the testimony mentioned above:

Thank you, Evan, for all your wonderful blogs – always enjoy them and find something that inspires and meets my specific needs each day. I remember reading a book many years ago by CH Lightoller about his experiences – unfortunately the title escapes me and I’m not sure that I still have the book – I find it so heartening to read of other’s demonstrations on our path ‘from sense to Soul’. Just something I found a little disturbing regarding the article in the New York Times by Beesley’s grandson – there’s a link to Christian Science , which, being a curious sort of person, I clicked on – the account given is not the Christian Science I know and practise – or am I behind the times here in Africa ??? Wondered whether you had read it too… ?
Thanks again Evan and lots of love and appreciation for all you do… Claire
Hi Claire,
No, I had not clicked on the link to Christian Science in the NY Times article. And you are correct, it is not a representative article of what CS teaches and the church would advocate. Thanks for pointing that out. Christian Science has had powerfully good effects in my family’s life and experience over the years. We are so grateful for all the blessings it has brought our way and in so many ways.
I just wrote a letter to the editor with regards to the link about CS. It might be useful for others to do the same. The email address to write to is [email protected]. Incorrect information like that is certainly an imposition on the public!

Just below the misinformed article on CS in the link, is a letter by Mary Trammel, then Chairman of the CS Board of Directors, which the Times published a couple of days later, in which she clarifyies the Church’s position on those issues. Hopefully those clicking on the link will be led to this truth further down the page.
Thanks Evan for this thought provoking article and all of your very timely blogs.
