Celebrate Christmas with spiritual sense

December 13, 2021 | 20 comments

Be sure to celebrate Christmas with spiritual sense this year!

In elevating the reason for the season, above the empty gratification and indulgence of physical sense, Mary Baker Eddy wrote,

“I celebrate Christmas with my soul, my spiritual sense, and so commemorate the entrance into human understanding of the Christ conceived of Spirit, of God and not of a woman — as the birth of Truth, the dawn of divine Love breaking upon the gloom of matter and evil with the glory of infinite being” (Miscellany, p. 262).

Christmas is meant to be a spiritual holiday. A time of deep spiritual thinking and reflection on man’s spiritual origin with God as revealed through Christ Jesus.

Material sense is a distraction from the holiday. Spiritual sense engages it!

Enjoy Christmas this year—with spiritual sense!

  1. Thanks Evan: it is important to be reminded that this seaon we can put away self gratification and really resonate on the signifance of Christmas.
Which is giving, that is giving of ourselves to all who needs our help
Let us all be chartible this season. Giving does not imporvish us in the service of our maker, neither does withholding enrich us.

  2. Appreciate the sharpening of my…our focus of the true reason for the season ~~~ “celebrate
Christmas with spiritual sense”. Grateful for the Miscellany, p. 262 quote from Mary Baker Eddy’s writing.

  3. I read Evan’s blog regularly but this is the first time I’ve been moved to add a comment.

A small town near us has an annual “Christmas bazar” with tables of any legitimate non profits who wish to participate. You can make Christmas donations to any of your choice and receive a lovely card for each donation to send as presents to those for whom you might otherwise buy material gifts.

I know a lot of people donate in someone’s honor on their own, but this group of folks encourages all who read the announcement of this event to keep the spirit of Christmas with gifts of the heart.

      1. Pleasant Hill, Tennessee. Actually it is the part of the town comprised of the retirees who live in the “step down” homes, assisted living and nursing home section of the town itself.

  4. This lovely Christmas message is just right. Thank you so very much,
Evan, and for your being a part of the Christ light, Nan Stewart, 2021

  5. Last year some neighbours and I decided not to give each other Christmas cards but to each make donations to charities of our choice. We were still able to wish each other a happy Christmas face to face as we met in the street.

  6. What better way to celebrate Christmas than thtough these Christly expressions of true charity- Agape Love. This is one way SpiritView blesses so many— by sharing revelation and blessings. Thanks to Evan for opening the window, and others for giving your ideas.

  7. This year I went to the post office to buy stamps, and the line was so short that I bought a sheet of Christmas stamps, found Christmas cards with one of the Peanuts characters and mailed 16 of them to family and friends in Paris, Austin, TX, Herndon and Charlottesville, and Alexandria, VA, Asheville, NC, Greensboro, GA, Redding and San Mateo, CA, and Honolulu, Hawaii where I live. The joyous response has been heart-warming. There’ll be no cutbacks on my watch. Merry Christmas to one all all!

  8. Thank you Evan. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 209), “Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God.” God can’t be seen, felt, or heard by distracted material senses, so it’s through the Christ, Truth, that spiritual reality is revealed to us. Last night as I was putting together some songs for an event, I came across a song called “Looking Through the Eyes of Love”. Aha…so this is God’s view – looking through the “eyes of Love” (eyes = spiritual discernment, S&H p. 586). How comforting is it to know that God sees only Love – and as His/Her image and likeness it’s our only view too.

  9. Thank you, Evan, for your inspirational message today about celebrating Christmas.
And thank you, Angie for the Sentinel article about the healing love our pets can express to us. Like the author its author, I have been the grateful recipient of numerous instances of “kitty,” “doggie,” and “horsey” love, the latter kind shown by him when I was in the barn clearly not feeling well and at a time when I had fallen off of her and she stayed by my side until I could get up and it was clear I was okay. They know when we need their angelic, unconditional affection and support.

  10. CONGRATS Evan on your completion of Normal Class….now you can put C.S.B. after your name!

    1. Well thank you, but I graduated from Normal Class back in the mid 1990s, so have had CSB for quick some time now! Much love to you.

  11. Hi Diane, I looked through this great long list of people qualified as teachers of CS, and
thought there were rather a lot. Then I went back and noticed that it was a complete list,
and the newest ones are marked with a star.
