Creating Opportunities

Mary Baker Eddy astutely wrote,

“Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees. It feels, hears, and sees its own thoughts” Science and Health, p. 86.

Mortal mind is the human mind’s material view of the universe. Its point of view is fraught with limits, boundaries, lack and inadequacy.

Anytime you see limit and lack, you are looking through the lens of mortal mind.

In Truth, we live in a universe of divine Mind; where there are no limits, no lack, and no boundaries to the good that can be experienced and expressed.

As the human mind is improved with spiritual understanding, the limited mortal mind view subsides and the expansive immortal Mind view takes greater hold. Life gets better, supply appears, and health is more secure.

So, if you ever feel like there are limits on your demonstration of abundance, health or happiness, what needs to change? Not something “out there,” but “in here.” Your point of view needs to improve.

When thought expands from the limited mortal view to the infinite immortal view, it sees more possibilities and greater opportunities. I’ve seen this happen many times in my life.

Many times when a progressive step for my family seemed impossible because I saw limited finances, I would strive to understand the idea behind the step better. Once I understood the idea, the means to see it through would practically appear before my eyes, sometimes in what appeared to be miraculous ways.

For instance, 20 years ago when I felt ready for normal class instruction in Christian Science, it was going to require a few thousand dollars to pay for travel and lodging costs. I didn’t have the money. But I knew the idea was right. Shortly before it was time to travel, a man came into my office and handed me a check that covered all the expenses and more. He knew nothing about the class.

The same rule applies to work, family and health. You see what you believe. If you see and understand a home filled with love and peace, that’s what you’re going to find when you come home. If you see and understand what meaningful work entails, you’re going to be employed in meaningful work. If you understand health to be permanently established by God, not subject to disease, your health is going to be more reliable.

Mortal mind is the limited view. Immortal Mind is the infinite view. Side with the infinite view and prevent thought from getting strapped down by the finite. Opportunities to go and grow will present themselves all around you and you’ll keep moving forward with boundless joy and freedom.

  1. Simple and beautifully expressed, as ususal here, and thanks, Evan for lifting the mortal view!!! smiles–Merri

  2. Just simplifies the mortal, human, and immortal so beautifully. Thank you, Evan. Our experience is the objectification of our thinking. That is absolutely true! The Bible Lesson this weeks talks much about interpreting, interpretation. Interpreting life from a spiritual basis of abundance, health, harmony brings that into our experience tangibly, doesn’t it? This article is a gem!

  3. Wonderful Evan. I find it helpful not to try to clean what appears to be a dark spot on the screen, but instead to remove it from the lens of the projector. Thanks for your inspiring words.

  4. Thank-you Evan, once again, for lifting us above the fog into clear and present knowing. This is so timely and so beautiful!

  5. Yes, excellent, Evan, as always. You are an angel, for sure.

Years ago I found the following quote in one of Mary Baker Eddy’s Other
Writings titled, Christian Healing, Pg. 8:

“Plato… said, “What thou seest, that thou beest.”

I have used this over and over as a humble reminder to remember that what I am humanly “being” (believing, expressing, etc), THAT is what I am seeing
    “out there.”

Thought determines experience. This is coming ever clearer to me, however much I may sometimes resist the responsibility it implies! Mortal thinking so wants to FIX the external picture, to blame, etc. etc.

Also, Mrs. Eddy says of how Christ Jesus healed:

” Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour
saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.”

    ~Science and Health, page 476

He SAW what he WAS. This corrected what appeared to be OUT THERE.

    What an amazing, divine Science!

  6. I was born with Cerebral Palsy and so was my wife. Our parents were told to put us into an institution and let us die there. BUT! The negative never took effect fore our parents were thinkers way above the mortal picture even though they were not as yet studying C/S. We both grew and had successful lives beyond our wildest dreams. This from not taking in the destructive mortal picture

  7. Thanks for this post. I make jewelry, and last year tried to sell it at some craft fairs but barely sold enough to pay for my booth rental. Then I sold some before Christmas at my apartment building, which is mostly older people -wasn’t sure I’d sell much but I did! This year I skipped the craft shows, and decided to just do the sale at my building. I was stressing about it, but then realized I needed to pray – and remember my motive, which is to provide a chance for people who may not be able to get out to get gifts for others, with an opportunity to do so. When I refocused my attention on what was really important – serving others – I was able to really put my all into the preparations. I ended up selling a lot of jewelry, which was great – but even better was feeling like I had helped people!

  8. Thank you for this, Evan.

This is exactly what I have been working on with prayer over the past several days.

Thus the first thing I did was come across your new website this morning as i sat in my study and found exactly what I needed when I needed it. Wow!

I have to be willing NOT to be experiencing lack and you just showed me how to do it.

A similar message like this one has come to me several times in the past few days. This is the way it should be with everyone helping each other in one grand brotherhood.

I love how this all works when we listen.

    I will follow and rejoice!

Truth, Wisdom, Love and Sincerity, to ALL mankind.

  9. When I lost my car in an accident, it came to me that lack of a car was not going to govern my Life so I filled my life with study, learning, understanding, and Love. And that is just what came to be. I opened my home and time to Painters’ Playhouse where fellow artists join me three mornings a week to learn from each other and sharing their joys with artworks.

  10. I’m reading this a day late and I’m surely glad I did go back. I’ve been needing to work on this very topic. I have been seeing wonderful results as I have been called on to help out steadily for the next 8 days. I have always claimed that God was my father and God has always husbanded me so lovingly. Sometimes mortal mind tries to creep in and deny this. I know that “What we think about we bring about”! So there is no time for a” why me” moment. We need to stand porter at the door of thought and claim what is rightfully ours! We are God loved, supported and cared for right now and all ways.
