Does God have a sense of humor?

I was intrigued by a question a caller asked me today. “Does God have a sense of humor?”

I like to laugh and chuckle. It certainly makes my day lighter and activity more enjoyable.

It’s hard to believe God is grim and dreary, unable to find joy and charm in the glorious universe God created. That’s just not the divine nature! But, humor can get out of control too, made at the expense of another or dropping into low places.

I’ve read a few books on humor, and what the experts say is that people laugh when they are surprised. If you think about it, when someone surprises you in a pleasant way, you giggle, chuckle or outright laugh. Comics are constantly trying to surprise their audience in some way to elicit an outburst. Thus the ridiculous antics, jokes and acts they conjure.

God does not have to put on an act to elicit a laugh and entertain an audience. God is God. That is good enough! But when one thinks about the infinitude of God, how much wonder there is to be discovered, felt and experienced throughout God’s unfathomable universe, it seems to me that life is going to be full of pleasant surprises along the way.

If pleasant surprises elicit a chuckle and exclamation of delight, then life per God’s design is full of joy.

The universe of Spirit is full of surprises for the adventurous explorer of Truth.

Producing those joys is perhaps how God employs a sense of humor. Life is divinely designed to be fun!

  1. I KNOW God has a sense of humor, cuz She made me!!

(Take this any way you wish!)

  2. I think of joyful and happy things when I read the Bible Lesson daily.
This creates an open personality for the day with results of keeping a smile on my face. It becomes catching for those I meet to smile back at me. The day goes smooth and establishes welcome relationships for interesting conversations.

  3. Such a question (and I DO believe She does) is similar to one I’m mulling over in thought this week with the lesson stressing humility. If all good qualities originate in God, is humility one of Her attributes?

  4. Someone told me that Michael Pabst, a director of TMC. told his class that if they weren’t having fun being a Christian Scientist they weren’t doing it right.
