Dominion over buffet lines

November 1, 2012 | 4 comments

A gentleman striving to not eat too much when he ate out at restaurants serving food buffet style, prayed for freedom from the temptation to take several plates of food for one meal.

After accepting an invitation to eat at a buffet restaurant with a group of friends for lunch recently, he prayed first for dominion over gluttony. And in prayer, it suddenly occurred to him that the permission granted at the buffet was “All you can eat,” not “Eat all you can.”

“All you can eat,” doesn’t mean eat more than you need. It is simply freedom to eat what you need, he saw. That realization snapped the mesmerism and he was able to stay happy with one plate of food rather than several. Progress! Yay!

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.”  Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:6)

  2. Evan, loved the simplicity of this. In our society, food is everywhere, tons of it, and we eat for many reasons other than fulfilling our need for fuel. This was a wonderful way to look at food. I try to highlight quality rather than quantity. Good clean eating. No more do I ingest junk food than I would sit and watch junk TV. I feel we should be experiencing the highest quality of the human scene. Loved this, and thank you so much.

  3. I don’t know how to answer this, except to say, I do love to eat and I am not ashamed of it. Before I feel bloated, I stop. I love variety of foods. Maybe, I over eat, I don’t know. To tell you the truth, I just love to eat and I find no shame in that. The tremendous importance we hear about eating is ridiculous, and methinks it comes mostly from the medical profession. Study Daniel in the Bible for instance when he was told that he must eat the Kings meat. RUBBISH, eat and enjoy. Your taste buds will let you know what’s good or bad to eat.

  4. At a recent CS Association address we were to “eat when hungry and stop when no longer hungry” not stop when full. Another simple way to look at things.
