Don’t be overwhelmed

June 4, 2010 | 2 comments

If you’ve been watching the news about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the evidence of growing harm to the ocean and surrounding communities can feel overwhelming. The blob of expanding black in the sea on the maps used by TV commentators is horrifying.

But wait a minute… Is it okay to be horrified? Is it okay to feel overwhelmed and terrified by the magnitude of the need?

I think not, I decided two nights ago after watching the latest newscast.

To have a positive impact and discern how to reverse the destruction the fastest, it’s vital that an inspired point of view be maintained. The depth of evil appears overwhelming in terms of how to contain the vastness of the spill and prevent widespread injury to delicate wildlife, marshes and beaches for hundreds of miles around the Gulf. But evil is a lie, Jesus Christ taught. No matter how big it looks, it is not bigger than the power of good to reverse it.

God is bigger than this problem! I exclaimed.

I thought about other evils we face in life and how important it is to counteract the lie and never give in.

For instance, if a disease appears to spread uncontrollably in the physical body, to heal the body, one must not consent to the evil. It must be resisted vehemently, strongly and powerfully to stop it. One cannot sit back, consent, and go “Oh well.” That would allow the evil to spread. It has to be resisted and it can be with opposite spiritual truth.

The same rule applies to the spread of a financial calamity. To reverse it, one must not consent to further impoverishment. Whatever the evil suggestions are, they must be countered and reversed with truths that stem the tide of loss and replace it with something better and good.

To be overwhelmed by what is presently happening in the Gulf is a bad sign in our individual thinking that we might likewise consent to the spread of evil in our own individual experience. This must not be.

We must stay alert, awake and on top of the metaphysical need of the moment.

Don’t be overwhelmed by evil! Counter it. Deny it. Resist it. Don’t give in to it. Your prayers make a difference. All of our prayers make a difference.

This too shall pass…

Our collective prayers for the uncontrolled oil flow to stop, the environment to be restored, and for wiser action on drill rigs in the future will be answered. Right will prevail. Evil will be conquered. There is no better time to know this than today for the benefit of the Gulf, surrounding areas and our own future well being too.
