Doubt evil, not good

August 22, 2018 | 21 comments

“If thought is startled at the strong claim of Science for the supremacy of God, or Truth, and doubts the supremacy of good, ought we not, contrariwise, to be astounded at the vigorous claims of evil and doubt them, and no longer think it natural to love sin and unnatural to forsake it, — no longer imagine evil to be ever-present and good absent?”

~ Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 130

If an illness appears on the body, which is your first tendency—to believe it or to doubt it?

If a conflict erupts between you and another person, which is your first tendency—to believe relations are going to worsen, or to stay clear that the conflict is going to be quickly resolved?

Do you trust good more than evil, is the bottom line question?

Mary Baker Eddy’s quote above is thought-provoking. If God is omnipotent, supreme, why do we too often have more faith that something bad is going to happen, rather than something good?

Just because a problem appears, doesn’t mean it has to worsen. It can quickly disappear. Truth makes it so.

So, it might be healthy for you to make an honest assessment of where you place your faith—in good or in evil?

If your faith is in God, then when a problem appears, you will not be inclined to think it’s going to worsen. You’ll put your faith in the mighty presence of God to resolve that problem and make it go away.

Don’t doubt God’s power and presence. Doubt evil! And triumph over that evil.

  1. Evan This is just what I needed today to get back to the basics Thank you this is right on, to get my thinking straight

  2. Very important lesson which for me, at times, is difficult to follow within this political climate of constant division. God’s government is supreme and we its members.

  3. Thank you, Josef! “God’s government is supreme and we its members!” I tend not to get stressed out by the political climate or have the need to discuss and/or debate this and that, as we just need to give all our seeming fears and trouble to God. God is all in all – period! He brings peace and love to all. I find the need to trust completely every minute of every day – let go and simply “let” God! It’s amazing how our troubles become much less when we we realize we personally do not have to do the work, but rather continually recognize God’s presence and power governing and loving us all, every minute, every day! This is the work that needs to be done – recognizing what already is (how God sees us all) and being all the way focused on only that which is good while trusting completely (without doubt) is what brings only good into our daily experience. Thank you, God!

  4. Yes yes we need to trust in the power of God to resolve our every problem instead of being pessimistic. God is such a loving father who knows our every need before we even ask for it. He is loving, forgiving, kind, merciful and always by our side, watching over us, protecting us, providing every thing good.
So we need to put all our trust in Him and never doubt His care and power to work out our every problem, however hopeless it may appear to be. Thanks Evan for the encouraging and inspiring message

  5. Is the thought coming to us from God? That is the test. Much gratitude, Evan, for each spiritual reminder.

  6. Thank you so very much for this post!! I’ve been working a lot to trust more and overcome fear. I’m not usually afraid of anything specific, I just find myself being afraid. So thank you very much for this!

  7. Yes, Thank You for this, Evan! Soooo needed Now in this material world! I, too, have been struggling with what might be called “free floating anxiety”. I often turn to p.96 in Science and Health, 2nd paragraph: “This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace.” And the paragraph ends with “…..when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.” Almost a prophecy of what our world is experiencing now! So grateful we have the Truth that Jesus brought and that Mrs. Eddy discovered as Divine Science! Love and Blessings to All!

  8. On first glance one would say, “Of course I doubt evil, not good.” However, the details Evan gave uncover the subtly of our thoughts thinking about our getting a cold, the flu, etc etc. It is all well & good to think God is taking care of everything but WE have the responsibility of listening for God’s direction and then ACTING, not just saying that God will take care of it, whatever the ‘it’ is.

  9. Your inspiration is greatly appreciated and thank you Nergish for your inspiration. Matter/mortal mind sure tries to find lodgment and claim power, but this weeks lesson handles that thought.

  10. yes and yes. Fear is the core of belief in evil. I just had a moment I haven’t had in a long time. I was anxious and I couldn’t figure it out. A real knee jerk reaction to living. I dropped it.
Receive the good as the norm. There is nothing to manage about evil.

  11. Thanks Joseph and Jane for your good thought on this subject.and of course Evan.

Watching our every thought and agreeing with the good negating
the evil is so important to our daily life governed by God.

  12. Evan’s statement, above, “ If your faith is in God, then when a problem appears, you will not be inclined to think it’s going to worsen. You’ll put your faith in the mighty presence of God to resolve that problem and make it go away.“ really came true yesterday, when our beloved dog Brandy somehow went missing from the fenced yard at our new home. I was in the grocery store, when my husband called me in a panic, to tell me Brandy was missing. I said to him firmly, “God knows where she is!” As I paid for my groceries, I prayed to know that God, universal Mind, knew and cherished Brandy, a beautiful spiritual idea of a dog. On the way home, I suddenly saw Brandy on a sidewalk, with two young men who had seen her wandering, and stopped their pickup to check on her. Jumping out of my car, I told them that the two of them were angels sent from God. And, of course, they were.

  13. Oh, how very lovely, inspiring comments – thank you all so very much!

I also learn more and more to put full trust and faith in God, who is almighty, allknowing, allseeing, all doing divine Love.

And with relation to “faith” I remember this passage from MBE in SH p. 387: “The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering.”

I love this passage, because it is for sure that God gives us “faith and understanding”.

Thank you very much dear Evan for the wonderfully clear passage from SH p.130, and your uplifting SpiritView!
