Expect to stay healthy

One of my readers shared this story with me.

She was listening to a Cheyenne tribal elder, who is an ethnobotanist (better known historically as a medicine man or healer) telling about his grandfather.

When his grandfather was around 100 years old, he was sitting on his porch one afternoon when a car drove up in front of his house. A public health nurse got out of the car, walked over to him and started yelling at him because he would not come into the clinic.

She repeatedly told him, “You need us to check your ears, eyes, teeth, and you need a shot.”

He had not been going to the clinic, and he wasn’t taking any medicines.

He did not respond to the nurse, who got even madder, and then finally gave up and left in an angry huff.

After she was gone, his wife came out to the porch. He turned to her and quietly said, “I didn’t know I was supposed to get sick.”

The Cheyenne elder explained that his grandfather expected to be healthy and did not expect sickness to be any part of his experience. He lived accordingly and stayed healthy.

He went onto further explain that people are often educated to be sick, and that we need to resist those suggestions so that we don’t unwittingly take on ill-states of thought that lead to unnecessary suffering.

  1. This is so true. These false expectations of sickness and ageing beliefs are all around and we must resist taking them in. It made me think of those wonderful pages from 390 onwards in “Science and Health” where we read “You have no law of His to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick.” Thank you for this great story Evan.

  2. HI Evan…..That is an eye opener for the general public……When people caution me about not getting close to them so that I do not catch their cold, I say back ….”well, God didn’t throw it, why not catch my health?” that gets a reaction!
    Thank-you!!

  3. Such a purity and innocence, so it looks for me, which is also desirable for us.

Thank you very much, Evan for this true and lovely – and yes I would say – life testimony!

I am grateful that I learned to see that in our christian scientific way.

  4. Love this! With everyone talking about Health Insurance and expecting to use it, this is an amazing reminder and story about doing exactly the opposite! THANK YOU so much!

  5. If there is light,
    there can only be One…
I see this Light when my
    eyes serve my Soul…

    There is only One Love,
    and it wants naught from
    any Being….
    It’s nature is radiating,
    with no need to receive…

    Now Love overflowing,
    burst damns of
    ignorant thought…
I lay my self to rest,
    and God’s Man
    resurrected his Soul….

  6. It is often difficult to stay on the long and narrow with drug commercials and thoughts about aging being thrown at you. Not standing with truth is a nightmare I cannot afford.

  7. Good day Evan and friends of the forum. What a wonderful story! Touching I loved. It makes us reflect and think that we are One in Love. The aborigines also reflect God and his blessings. I remember Mrs. Eddy who said that the aborigines perceived God in their own way, so much so that they called a lake “the smile of the great Spirit”. As Mrs. Eddy said, we should not limit the good and the beautiful. Blessings to all.

  8. What a wonderful story, thanks so much for sharing. Also, thanks to Clara for your response to a friend’s warning, ”well, God didn’t throw it, why not catch my health?” – excellent!

  9. This reminds me of a friend who found her birth parents when about 21 yrs old. When questioned by her birth parents as to whether she had horrible allergies like them and her 1/2 siblings. She replied, “no, I didn’t know I was supposed to.”
