Financial meltdown or prayer build-up?

September 26, 2008 | 4 comments

It occurred to me this morning that the most important activity happening in the financial sector of our country right now is not the meltdown on Wall Street so many investors fear. It’s the prayers of the spiritually minded at work dissolving those fears and restoring peace of mind about the future of our economy.

When crisis hits, it’s tempting to get caught up into the disaster of the moment. Even this morning, the front page of my local newspaper headlined the downfall of WaMu. We have money in that bank. So, I ask, what is most helpful? To panic, worry and fret? Or to pray for calm and peace of mind that enables me and others to make sound wise financial decisions? I believe the latter.

The more all of us buckle down in prayer and refuse to go hysterical over the calamity facing the markets, the sooner sanity and wisdom will take over and redirect the economy of our world in a progressive direction that better serves humanity.

No doubt, many mistakes have been made. Gross sins need to be recognized that got us into this mess. But the path to a sound economy is not the route of red-hot anger, self-righteous finger-pointing, futility, or resignation to defeat. The road to reliable prosperity is the path of increased wisdom, morality, sound reasoning and spiritual mindedness. These virtues lived and practiced, lead to healing, and they come to us in the quietness of prayer.

Will you join me in a few quiet moments of prayer today for the integrity of our economy?

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Psalms

  1. thank you so much evan. I have been praying these last few days specifically for our government and to transcend the recriminations of mortal mind. And victory in Spirit is assured: “…the Scriptures are full of accounts of the triumph of Spirit over matter.” Spirit: the intelligence, order, goodness and righteousness of Mind, the supreme and only power of mankind.

  2. This week’s Time Mag. has a picture of our new Sec. of the Treasury, who best understands the whole financial markets, and is a Christian Scientist, and was chosen for his good reputation. The old often has to be demolished to clear the way for the new.

  3. Thank you for your comforting thoughts, Evan, and for the invitation to join you in prayer.

Before reading your blog, I had been praying with a poem written by Mary Baker Eddy which correlates with the Bible verse that you quoted above. The poem begins “O gentle presence, peace and joy and power.” I pray with this poem often, but this time, what really shouted in my thought was “Love is our refuge; only with mine eye can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall.” I actually started to giggle at this because I immediately recognized that it was God’s thought coming to me for healing.

You see, I have literally been checking our investment account every day online, and watching it fall, fall, fall. For the past several weeks I have been giving this topic specific prayerful attention since I had been feeling so fearful about losing everything. While praying with this poem, however, I became peaceful. I realized that it is a mortal, limited sense of “eye” that tells us there is a fall or lack of any kind. But, spiritually, and truthfully, divine Love’s habitation is high, and it’s here and near right now … there is no falling out of divine Mind’s consciousness … no loss of anything good because good, God, is infinite, and infinity has to be here now because there isn’t any other place for it to be!

“God is good, and loss is gain.” The only thing we ever lose is a mortal sense of ourselves or our economy or our health, etc. And what we gain is the understanding of our ever-present, spiritual and abundant perfection, and of the kingdom of God within us. YAY!

  4. Yes, you have the right idea! These times certainly require us to see past the temporal to the eternal which forever sustains us. No loss in Spirit to fear. And Spirit truly feeds us, clothes us, and provides a safe place to stay. Just like Jesus proved.
