A goal for the New Year

January 9, 2017 | 28 comments

Here’s one goal you can set for the New Year that will take you to a better place.

“…let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”

~ Ephesians, 4:23,24, NLT

To let the Spirit of God guide you is to put aside human will, self-serving ego and pride. It’s to let the intelligence and wisdom of God guide you and direct your path. It’s to let God’s will be done and to trust that the divine Mind always knows best.

When God is leading the way, you’re destined to walk a progressive journey and arrive at an awesome place.

May you enjoy God’s company every day that lies ahead.

Happy New Year!

  1. Thank you, Evan, for this rousing and comforting message, which covers every aspect of each day and the year as a whole. May you be the blessed recipient of all the God-given ideas you so generously share with others, each and every day.

  2. Thank you Evan. The Bible verse you quoted today reminded me that yesterday the truth came to me very clearly that “God is not a God of intervention”. In other words, I realized more fully that our lives are not series of events in which something gets out of control and then God steps in to restore harmony. God’s creation is always in perpetual harmony. It struck me how often I think of myself as having to work up to or strive for good, or I need to fix something to restore harmony, and how different my life would be if I instead lived with an attitude that everything is already in perpetual harmony because God is in control and therefore I can realize that harmony right now. For example, I noticed this Bible verse says to “Put on” your new nature…it doesn’t say “spend a lot of time striving to improve yourself so you can change the bad aspects of your life into good”, but instead indicates the good is already present and we just need to “Put it on” (i.e. accept it, realize it). So my New Year’s resolution is to let the “Spirit renew my thoughts and attitudes” so that I stay focused on knowing that I’m already a child of God in perpetual harmony, rather than thinking I need to “improve” myself in some way in order to realize harmony. I believe this attitude will help me put aside human will, self-serving ego, and pride because those characteristics are just the result of believing we are lacking something and have to do something to get the good we want to experience. Thanks again and Happy New Year to you too!

    1. Brian… this is such a timely comment …”….not a God of intervention”
this is so important to understand because I think this will lead us to understand how the work of God lives thru us and thus help remove any preconceived notions on how God expresses us…Thank you so much

  3. Thanks Brian:

To renew my thoughts and attitudes are a welcomed suggestion for our Spiritual thoughts to unfold.

    Thanks!

  4. Happy New Year to You, Evan! And Happy New Year to SpiritView and All the Viewers and Commenters! What a Support Group! I have learned and am still learning that if I have just the smallest bit of willingness to turn my will and my life over to the God of my Life, that’s all it takes for the Spirit to take hold and to guide and govern my day. I kneel every morning to say, “I am willing to be willing to turn my Life and this Day over to YOU, for my Good and for the Highest Good of All Concerned. Thank You! I Love You!” Willingness is a Big Key to surrendering ego and self-will – God loves a willing Heart and can work within that willingness to transform us and our lives!

  5. If all is not created by God, but rather a constantly changing material environment with both chance and subtlety whose cosmic forces are on a tract of expansion-contraction from the big boom and back, then all is truly vanity and all our conjecture here about a living harmony available to all is merely fantasy. It would be so because in a 100 billion years from now all that was created here in the short span of human history would be long gone with no one to recognized or to take benefit from that knowledge. That is the ultimate result of relying solely material living as the basis of human existence. If however, this is a God created existence, There will always be that supreme intelligence, that loving nature, that truthful eternal existence which basis the whole of human experience and provides all proving as a demonstration of faith in a power much beyond our limited expressions. We are then, in fact, part of an eternal nature always necessary, always needed, always loved and always joined together as a family based upon truth, life, love included in the divine science of harmonious, joyous, complete and perfect expression of that one infinite existence. Thank you Brian, Janet and of course Evan for your most loving leadership.

  6. I awoke this morning upset due to actions taken by my state’s politicians, and by the way it was all done. I immediately turned to God as the ONLY power, praying to know only S/He is in control, and all needs are met. This message today is a big help in supporting that!

Thanks! And, happy New Year under God’s control!

  7. 16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

  8. From the KJV Bible, II Corinthians 4, verse 16, For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. This has proven to be beneficial in my daily progress; this new year will continue to see renewal.

  9. I rely on “comic relief” at times to help not take life and even Christian Science too seriously
while at the same time admitting CS to be the most important part of my life…

    Now for some comic relief
An imaginary conversation between Human….”H” and True Being…. “TB”

H……. I would like to compare my best qualities with yours

    TB……. OK…. you aren’t real, but whatever… I’ll try…

    H…. I believe in god

    TB…… I know God….. he’s my Mother

    H….. I know love….

    TB…… I am Love…..

    H…..somethings are sacred….

    TB…….no- thing is sacred…

H….. god supplies all my needs…

    TB…… I have no needs…..

    H…. god created everything

TB….. God has not created nothing
    Existence has no beginning or
    end

H….. there is life after death…

TB…… I never die, nor have I ever been
    born

    H …… not sure I believe you exist…

    TB…… I KNOW you do not exist….

H…. can we agree on anything

TB….. well, go ahead, give it a try

    H…. Life is good…sometimes..?

    TB….. Life is good…always…

    H…. well I tried…..

    TB….Nice talking to you, won’t see you around… I’m waking up NOW…

    1. All the good in a human is real and true. It is God being expressed through them. The mortal mind looks at a human and misinterprets what it sees, giving matter the credit, rather than God. But when God is given the credit for all the good, the immortal nature of that individual becomes clearer and clearer. The human transcends into the divine.

        1. The human is between mortal and immortal, a seeming mixture of the two, but as thought is spiritualized, it becomes more and more immortal and less mortal.

  10. Thank you Evan for todays SV. I mainly thought about the Bibleverse from Ephesians 4.
I understand the putting on our new nature (our true nature) to be the rebirth in Spirit. Also Christ Jesus explains the spiritual rebirth to Nikodemus, which is necessary to understand devine Truth and Love. This we read in the third pessage in this weeks CS bible lesson. I think this is important for us in order to be taken to a better place.
Evan, you are also showing us the way to this goal, thank you!

  11. What wonderful comments this morning, especially Brian. I’d like to add a couple from “OUR DAILY IDENTIFICATION WORK” by Arthur P. Wuth (Journal, February 1978)

“WHERE AM I ? I AM RIGHT HERE IN GOD’S UNIVERSE. NEVER OUTSIDE HIS PRESENCE, CONTROL OR INFLUENCE. BECAUSE I AM GOD CENTERED, I AM ALWAYS IN MY RIGHT PLACE.”

“WHY AM I? I EXIST TO FULFIL GOD’S WILL, TO BEAR WITNESS TO WHAT HE IS, TO GLORIFY HIM, TO MANIFEST HIS QUALITIES.”

I am in the midst of a probable considerable change in my life moving from a home with 1,284 sq. ft. in the mountains, to a condo with 550 sq. ft. in a city. These two statements above are my constant companions. I also love hymn 148 which states “no change my heart shall fear.” How grateful I am for God’s guidance in every facet of my life and to Christian Science revealing this truth to me!

  12. Unity of Good. 36:10-26

This whole subject is met and solved by Christian Science according to Scripture. Thus we see that Spirit is Truth and eternal reality; that matter is the opposite of Spirit, — referred to in the New Testament as the flesh at war with Spirit; hence, that matter is erroneous, transitory, unreal.

A further proof of this is the demonstration, according to Christian Science, that by the reduction and the rejection of the claims of matter (instead of acquiescence therein) man is improved physically, mentally, morally, spiritually.

To deny the existence or reality of matter, and yet admit the reality of moral evil, sin, or to say that the divine Mind is conscious of evil, yet is not conscious of matter, is erroneous. This error stultifies the logic of divine Science, and must interfere with its practical demonstration.

If I have any free will at all, it is to acknowledge the Supremacy of God, good and to reject the claims of material existence as a fabulous bombardment of a non existent argument. Therefore all that can truly exist is the one self existent, all powerful, all intelligent, all present good having no battle with self but constant, divine science unfolding the truth of divine love in eternal life.

    1. Josef this really helps..as per Evans comment to my comment in trying to understand “human” he made it clear, as did your reference to MBE, that human is constantly improving with CS practice…a movement of moving from “Mortal mindedness” to the chemicalized state of “Immortal mindedness”….
Now I can imagine a human state of consciousness that is well along in this ‘process’, you might say one has effected a change in the proportion of the two…a state where ones personal sense has been almost completely overshadowed by ‘Spiritualized’ thought…..in this state demonstration is more prevalent because human ‘will’ is barely expressed and said human can with certainty understand and know God is the only actor in demonstration…
So this human can still remember ‘personal will’ but has diminished its expression and even its reality…. I like to call this state “being on the shore of the river Jordan” where we can see the land of ‘milk and honey’ but have not fully crossed over……and perhaps the final realization in order to cross is that it has never been personal will….it has always been Gods loving will

      1. Maximo, Nicely stated. I think the immensity of MBE’s discovery was that recognition of our true relationship to God through Christ. For me ‘free will’ is what dissolves into the only true will, ‘God’s will.’ It is our sacrifice of this will to grow into the timeless will of divine science.

    1. Me to….Especially because we get to witness this amazing unfoldment
so full of wonderment, Love, exploration, learning….reverence, sacredness
      each other…all life forms…appreciating and respectful….

I feel like a kid in a metaphysical candy store…….

  13. Brian thank you for your lovely thought. I always treasure your comments. Lori I never minded moving because I always
knew that we take our home with us where ever we are. The quality of what you treasure in your home can always travel with you. Enjoy ! Be expectant!
Once I travelled with a lovely floral arrangement so I could look at something beautiful in my disarranged
    Kitchen.

    I

  14. Evan, thank your for today’s message and your clarifications of comments from Maximo about “human.” Really helped me. Brian, I, too, always treasure your remarks.

Lori, thank you for the wonderful quote in the 1978 Sentinel by Arthur P. Wuth: “WHERE AM I ? I AM RIGHT HERE IN GOD’S UNIVERSE. NEVER OUTSIDE HIS PRESENCE, CONTROL OR INFLUENCE. BECAUSE I AM GOD CENTERED, I AM ALWAYS IN MY RIGHT PLACE.”

“WHY AM I? I EXIST TO FULFIL GOD’S WILL, TO BEAR WITNESS TO WHAT HE IS, TO GLORIFY HIM, TO MANIFEST HIS QUALITIES.”

This short message says it all. It is a keeper.
