Keep thought clean of mortal mind malware

November 3, 2022 | 21 comments

If you’d like events in your life to keep moving along smoothly, be sure to keep the thought governing that life experience clean and free of all mortal mind malware!

Mortal mind malware is evil thinking. It’s malicious anger, negative attitudes, ill-will toward others, resentment, fear, dark and depressing viewpoints, immoral or unspiritual behavior. It’s any kind of thinking that would deny the omnipresence and omnipotence of Love.

As computer users need to regularly clean the hard drives of their device from viruses, phishing, and hacking tools, to keep their devices running at optimum speed, we need to regularly be honest about what is running through our consciousness and be quick to delete ungodlike thoughts.

The cleaner our thinking is of evil, the easier it is to feel close to God. The closer we feel to God, the quicker healing comes.

  1. I love that expression, ‘mortal mind malware.’ An accurate description of the faulty programming that we can seem to take on in our thinking. Sometimes it is hard to find the Delete button to remove the erroneous beliefs like fear, depression, resentment. But we can Add in true thoughts by reaching out to God and focusing on His qualities such as joy, harmony and peace. Mrs. Eddy said, “The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love.” (S&H p. 201).

      1. dear Shelagh, thanks for the link to this gorgeous article. it is natural that God has all power over electronic, technic etc. too otherwise HE would not be allmighty, allknowing, all acting. God simply is the All in All! And God is all good and the only consciousness, so as His faithfull reflection we reflect this pure divine Consciousness.
Friends, so I do understand it in Christian Science. Yes, but we have to be alert to God’s good thoughts and let only those in through praying, listening and demonstrating divine Truth. Wow I know I have a lot to do – haha – but God, Love works with us!
Thank you dear Evan for your loving reminders to remain on the right track!
Love and thanks to you all!♡

  2. Great analogy Evan!

I’ve always been very quick to mute the TV or the radio when adverts come on — I see them as unsolicited intruders barging in my home. I chose to watch / listen to a specific programme, not a barrage of pushy marketing messages telling me to buy this product, or that it’s the time of year, or the time of your life when you’ll get disease XYZ so you have to buy this medication or you’ll get sick!

I often need to remind myself that I should be doing the same with pushy and convincing messages from error, but they’re often much more subtle than TV or radio adverts, so I often inadvertently leave them playing in my thought … it’s a work in progress to be more alert and switch them off / turn my thought away from them / keep my mind filled with Life, Truth and Love as soon as they would try to invade my consciousness …

Thanks for the reminder as always!

  3. Thank you so much once again, Evan . Reminds me of a favorite passage from Miscellany page 210 by Mrs.Eddy
“ Beloved Christian Scientists ,keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love that sin, disease , and death cannot enter them . It is plain thst nothing can be added to the mind already full , ….

  4. We are having a complete full fog
morning, yet we are certain nothing
    has changed.
    The same with dark nights.

We should be as certain in the
    changelessness of God.
Nothing to delete there, if we were
    as certain.

The fog will lift in time, no
    separation in God.
( when I wrote, no, the word
    separation popped up. Just the
word I was going to use)
    No separation!

We all know this, the daily
    comments affirm it.
    Thanks everyone.
    Happy happy God day,
    every day.

  5. Yes Evan, like Nehemia in the bible we need to be armed at all moments ready to give the right thought to a mortal suggestion. In this way we can always have reason to glorify God for being an ‘ever present help in trouble’

  6. Evan…..Your ideas for subjects are always so topical and individually relevant. They are universally applicable to humankind everywhere. Oh – if we could only digest and heed more! Thank you ever so much.

  7. One of the challenges in cleaning out “mortal mind malware” is that too often grievances, resentments, and anger come to us claiming a personal history, often arguing a narrative of one’s own past experience. Suggestions come as our own thought. Mortal mind will say “well, he did this or that”, or “if it were not for this intrusion and injustice my life would have turned out much better”.
It is healing to remember that the negative drama of mortal mind is an Adam dream scenario, not the true essence of our God like individuality. By impersonalizing error in our own thought, it is easier to reject it’s false claims.

    1. Linda I agree with everything you said. It made me think of a small incident that happened yesterday. I was walking toward the front of the bus to get off as it was my stop. Someone stood up and planted himself right in the middle of the narrow aisle and I could not pass. I said excuse me twice and he did not move. I said it louder a third time and he leaned a bit to one side but I still had to climb over his feet. The driver was about to close the doors and pull away because he thought no one was exiting. I was so angry and fuming, for quite a while, about how inconsiderate, oblivious and rude this person was to not step aside.

Later when I thought of it I realized I had taken a very material view. Who was I to say what was really going on, maybe God needed be to remain on that bus another few moments, maybe He was protecting me from something. I realized that nothing could keep me from being where I am supposed to be at all times, for the good of all concerned. God was on the job as always. Human will dropped away. The error was impersonalized, and then my angry feelings toward the man were neutralized.

  8. Thank you Evan and Everyone for your great comments today!

In the lesson this week is this from S&H, page 534:

“The serpent, material sense, will bite the heel of the woman, — will struggle to destroy the spiritual idea of Love…”

Hmmm…interesting I thought. It’s my acceptance of material sense testimony in consciousness that would try to hide the spiritual idea of Love in my consciousness.

As explained in my previous comments, lately I’m re-evaluating whether I just think I know what a word means and really know what it means. Today I asked myself, “Do you really know what is meant by ‘material sense’?” I thought I knew and would have told you it means “perception through the 5 physical senses”. But I looked up the word “sense” in the dictionary and found it has many other meanings:

    1) perception by the intellect
    2) quickness or acuteness of perception
    3) understanding
    4) reason
    5) opinion
    6) consciousness; conviction
    7) moral perception
    8) meaning; signification

If you put the word “material” before each of those definitions, it’s pretty enlightening. Then put “spiritual” and you get an entirely different meaning. For example, do I reason based on a matter based paradigm of reality or Spirit based reality. The following citation from S&H then came to thought:

Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees. It feels, hears, and sees its own thoughts.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 86:29–31)

So there really isn’t any such thing as 5 physical senses that make up “material sense”. Material sense is just a belief, in thought, that matter is real, that everything is matter, that there are material laws, that there is mind in matter, etc., etc. But the real Mind, that we all reflect, is filled with the spiritual idea of Love and therefore my thought is completely filled with that idea of Love and by focusing on that idea (using my spiritual sense of everything) instead of reasoning based on material opinions, beliefs, sensations, ideology, politics, illness, anger, resentment, evil, etc., that spiritual idea will become clearer and clearer to me. Hooray!

Evan’s computer malware analogy made me think of an article I read recently that points out we have a built in malware remover in the Christ. A link to that article is below:

    Christ—an always-present divine influence

  9. Love it! Had me laughing out loud at the malware analogy! Good one. Awesome.
And thanks everyone for the great article links too!

  10. Thank you. Feeling God’s love is natural since childhood. This is a great reminder of that familiar place with God in charge..

  11. Thanks Evan – you bring a modern simple touch to CS with just a word as an analogy that brings it home!

The pic is also delightful. Not only is the woman examining an empty mortal suggestion, but recognizing the sly nature, and defeating it. I expect her next reaction is to laugh.

Reminded me that keeping thought in check doesn’t always have to seem like a chore. It should be spontaneous and joyful. Something I need to work on.

  12. I like mental mind malware. I have often used computer analogies to describe things. For the longest time, I felt though I was reading wonderful things and was filled with inspiration, there always seemed a kind of program running in the background of my mind/consciousness,, so long there I barely noticed it but I did feel its influence. It was the mortal mind I was attached to for so long.
As my understanding is growing I am aware of the ‘program running in the background” but I stop and put the brakes on and shine a light on it as fast as I can.
This process is daily, minute by minute, but I am buoyed with the thought that no understanding of Truth is ever wasted. There is no going back once you have knocked on the door to Truth.
I am very grateful to CS for its treasure trove of metaphysical wisdom so many are willing to share.
I will say one more thing. I have often thought that Mrs. Eddy may have considered she could have kept this secret of healing to herself at the time she fell on the ice and was healed.. But she didn’t. I am grateful she was inspired to share it with the world and not keep her light under a bushel basket.
May we all be a beneficial presence to everyone.

  13.  I was reading some comments sent in with Spirit view
and some one sent in a transcription of a article by Jensn
I believe which talked about the early Christians and there
way of thinking after Jesus had ascended.
I was hoping I could get a copy of that article it had many
    great ideas.
