From lay-off to move-on

May 26, 2015 | 9 comments

When a person loses a job due to a lay-off, it can feel tough to adjust and figure out what to do next. Big questions might loom like, “Why me? Why did I get fired? What did I do wrong?” Or anger and resentment may boil over toward the company for making such a decision in the first place.

Whatever the human picture, there is a spiritual place one can go to find peace and direction. There doesn’t need to be suffering, remorse, anger or fear. A lay-off can be turned into a move-on—moving onto something better.

It’s helpful to remember that God is the head Employer over all, that the spiritually minded man lives in a divine economy where laws of justice and fairness prevail, that there is a good job for everyone, and that God’s law of progress is always moving us upward and onward to ever-increasing expressions of productivity, worth and value.

The key to making this demonstration is to mentally live in the divine economy.

The divine economy is a state of Mind where Love and Truth reign in consciousness. Love looks for the good and sees it. Truth sees enough good to go around for everyone and proves it.

The counterfeit to the divine economy is a material sense of economy which is prone to lack, misery and suffering. It’s an impoverished state of mortal thought that focuses on the negative, sees reason to suffer and makes excuses for lack of progress. It’s not a fun place to be. And it doesn’t help.

We can all make a choice to live in the divine economy and experience its benefits.

And a first step after facing a lay-off and wondering what to do next could be choosing to turn that lay-off into a move-on. Rather than looking back and harboring regrets or contempt, one can choose to look forward and use the opportunity to advance.

With God, there are no limits to good. There are only infinite opportunities to experience more of it.

A lay-off may feel shattering at the time, but it’s a temporal condition that can be overcome and left behind. God’s law of progress is always at work opening new doors and unfolding progressive possibilities. And divine Love is sure to open the perfect door for you right when you need it.

  1. Thanks Evan. This blog has come at an invaluable time to me as I am busy dealing with a career change where I feel led to take up a job that pays a few thousand pounds less (annually) than my current job.

Mrs Eddy wrote in Miscellaneous Writings on page 307: ‘God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for tomorrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever -present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment.’

Today’s blog and Mrs Eddy’s comment reminds me to look at the spiritual and not the physical.

  2. Another life giving way to live. We certainly know the other way of fear, lack, and anger do not work.

  3. Also in the divine economy there is no competition for resources/jobs because God as the Source of all good is universally showering blessings on His children. Great blog, Evan, and a reminder that what we are accepting as the status of things is never the whole picture unless it’s grounded in what is going on spiritually. What God knows and sees.

  4. Since God is my employer which a C/S Practioner long ago convinced of, I didn’t feel depressed when being let go of a Bank Job which I had, but looked forward to my next endeavor which wind up even better. God is so much better than leaning on matter.

  5. Oh, yes. Good advice. It took me a while after one such experience where I was unjustly accused of something that I would never do to recover to my God given divine right to be free from this sort of error in my own understanding. This is where Divine Mind can lead us to the Truth to free us from such past experiences and allows us to be as God made us, free from any human attempt at animal magnetism. All who knew me, knew that such false accusations could never be true and thus it all melted away as error does before the sunlight of Truth.

  6. I have suffered several redundancies (lay-offs) during my career, as well as a couple of reluctant job moves, when it seemed wisest to move on. As mentioned by a previous contributor, I found it helpful to remember God is my only employer, and to listen for direction, whilst trying not to feel any ill-will to my former employers, because my provision would always come from God. During a period of years when the general opinion was that there were no jobs ‘out there’, I was, on 3 separate occasions contacted by different individuals I had known previously through work, to ask me if I would be interested in a job with their firm. These approaches each came at precisely the right time when I was in need of another job, and each move was a good fit at that time. I was in awe of the way God took care of me. I am most grateful for the help of a very kind practitioner when the job prospects looked bleak to human sense, and grateful that we can know that no problem is too difficult for God.
Thanks so much for your blog, Evan.

  7. Thanks for this reminder that God is our true and only employer. Like several of the comments, I have experienced two lay-offs. The first due to a company relying on government contracts and losing them. Reverse discrimination made it impossible for me to find a job in my field for over two months. A complete change in my career led to over 25 years of successful and very satisfying work. The second was the result of false accusations, but I was healed of all resentment and finally able to continue on. I am now retired from the business world, but still employed by God!

  8. “It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect” (Psalm 18:32).
    Always, thank you, Evan.
