Let God govern your thought, not politics

September 4, 2020 | 23 comments

If you’re ever tempted to get tense or upset about what is happening with the political leaders of your country, or outside your country, it helps to remember that there is a higher power in control than politicians in office.

God reigns above all!

“God creates and governs the universe, including man” (Science and Health, p. 295), Mary Baker Eddy reminds her readers.

We live under God’s government above all else!

God governs through divine laws, laws of Principle, Love, and Truth, that inevitably triumph over all human conditions and circumstances, including political ones.

The more we collectively practice these laws in our individual lives, the sooner their good effect ripples through society and affects everyone else, including political officers and the positions they occupy.

If we wish to see more compassion in high office, the first place to start is with our own response to neighbors. Are we living the compassion toward others that we desire to see in others? If we wish to see more integrity in high office, are we living with integrity? Do our words and actions reflect the integrity of God in the form of calm, sound, sane, balanced perspective that brings peace and healing to those who listen?

As students of Truth, we can prosper and excel in our demonstration of Truth and Love no matter who is holding political office. We can stay spiritually inspired, enlightened, productive, and healthy no matter who is elected into office.

We have everything we need coming directly from God to live a successful spiritual life, which is the only “life” that counts.

Let God govern your thought, rather than the latest political maneuverings you read about in the press. Remember who is really in power and retain peace of mind.

    1. Thank you Evan for this post. It is very helpful for the times. Also to Angie above- I loved the article you shared-thank you! I hadn’t heard the idea in a while- of how the mortal mind and the material limited view consists of an inverted image. So helpful right now!

And in the article- the author talks about prior to class instruction- people were dealing with the “threat“ of H1N1. DURING my class instruction- moral minds tactics were pulling on my attention- as my daughter was calling me from SD- while I was in Boise for 2 weeks. She called me dealing with some very difficult thoughts including contemplating the reasons to continue living. I was so grateful that my teacher had mentioned- to be attentive to mortal mind during class instruction and to stay fixated on God and this very important time of learning more about God and Divine Science. Thankfully, I was able to get her help- with my teacher’s guidance. He had helped me find a CS practitioner in SD that head worked with younger people. It turned out to be a wonderful healing and I was so thankful that my daughter was receptive to working with a practitioner. She is not a CStist yet! 😉
I am very Grateful for these daily posts. They are gems in my inbox and I love hearing everyone’s contributions. Grateful to be learning more about how to love more, and reflect more of God’s qualities!

      1. Thank you, Christi, for sharing the beautiful healing w your daughter during class. And thanks to Evan for reminding us that NOTHING, including political leaders, can keep us from our focus on God and our continual spiritual growth. I just finished reading an interesting book on the life of Priscella by Ben Witherington, during the first century with the persecution of Christians from the Roman emperors. God protects and gives us peace no matter the political circumstances. Love, truth and justice always win.

      2. Thank you, Christi, for sharing this situation with your daughter at that time. What a good result! When I was 3 days into my Class instruction and in another state, my daughter called me with a problem for healing. Each day we were asked to write out our treatment for something (we could choose). I decided on “hayfever” as that was something I’d been having a problem with for most of my life. I felt very inspired and wrote for 6 hours straight after the class finished for the day. At about 11 pm my daughter called and asked “Muuuummmm can you give me some help. I have the worst hayfever ever!” So I confidently said, “Yes actually I can!” I read 2-3 pages of my notes to her and she went to bed, calling the next day to say she was fine. Class is a wonderful gift to give yourself AND your family!

  1. Evan your final statement was important to me “retain peace of mind”.
If anything disturbed me I am not keeping my consciousness in constant relation to the divine. Be it politics, finances , a virus or the actions of my neighbor that claims the ability to draw me out of my Father’s house and lose my peace of mind.
Jesus did say “I came that you might have peace. Not as the world giveth give I unto you. Let not your hearts be troubled.”
If my peace comes from above ( from spiritual consciousness ) it cannot be lost by a false narrative.

  2. This wonderful picture reminds me of the light of spiritual understanding…my ‘aha’ moments . And what a great feeling too that it proves my receptiveness to God governing my thought! I look forward everyday to learning more , loving more and proving the nothingness of mortal mind .

O dreamer leave thy dream for joyful waking
O captive rise and sing for thou art free,
The Christ is here, all dreams of errors breaking
Unloosing bonds of All captivity….from hymn 412

What beautiful words. Blessings to everyone❣️

  3. Thank you Evan. I’ve been praying to recognize that goodness and compassion cannot help but be expressed by elected officials, because they, as creations of God, are directed by spiritual sense only, not material sense. Trying to feel some tenderness and compassion for them, Also important to know where the true governing power is, in God alone.

In a community not far away, there had been reports of almost nightly shootings, often related to gang issues. I get an email every morning from a local news organization and it headlines the number of shootings the previous night. I started praying to know that we cannot be tricked into seeing the false picture of God’s man as angry, violent, agitated, compelled to do harm, We have a divine right to see the true picture of God’s man, free of these impulses, feeling peace and working towards good. The past several days the email from the news organization has mentioned no shootings. It feels wonderful to know we can lift our thought and expect to see increasing good around us. Thank you and much love to all!

    1. Thank you for your healing prayers, Rose!! They DO make a difference! I also saw the results of prayers re violence when living behind a street w the most crime/violence in Boston.

      1. Thank you Cathryn for your words of appreciation. It means a lot. Blessings to you, and to all of us as we keep lifting thought up to reveal more and more Truth. Feeling grateful!

    2. A thought that comes to me right now Rose is when Paul said: “NONE of these things move me”. We have all been praying about CV, that it has no intelligence, is a lie about reality, has n oo law of God to give it presence or power etc..but so is the so-called “power” behind a gun also impotent. This is yet another thing with no intelligence, no power of its own to act…as mortal mind also has no power, no strength, no aggression to own or believe in. God gave us NOT “the spirit of fear, but of a sound mind”. Also this thought that the attraction of using a gun does not belong to God’s harmonious, loving creation/child. God never gave anyone an attraction to violence in any way. It simply is not our birthright, not a part of anyone. Sounds as if you are doing good work where you are!

  4. Perfect for these times, Evan! And we can remember that God governs our thoughts on social media also. This rules out mean and unkind political memes on Facebook and twitter. Call out the error, not the person, who ever remains God’s reflection, despite mortal mind’s opinion.

  5. Principle, Mind does not pander, keep changing or swaying thought, promise one thing but do another, slander, cheat or have personality. Even if negativity tries to prevail every which way it can, as mortal mind often tries, one with God is a majority.
Candidates who stand unwavering consistently for what is good, who want to keep God and values of Christlike principles in the forefront, have Truth on their side and Truth always wins in the long run.
Thank you for the reminder, Evan ~ it is good to keep our thought pure from the mudslinging of politics and trust that God is the highest power, which benefits All, thus unifying thought rather than being divisive.

    1. As usual, well-stated Carol. I have been thinking (again) about the message of Psalm 91. While it may assure protection at an individual level – “A thousand shall fall at thy side and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.” – this protection may be extended to a nation comprised of sufficient right thinkers. Our country was founded upon enlightened ideals, the highest known to imperfect people living within the state of public consciousness of those times. The high motive nevertheless remains to be protected and extended by current and future citizens of good will and wisdom. We do need to recognize and support those in public office most attuned to protecting and preserving our unique heritage as well as extending these freedoms to future generations and continue to recognize our nation as a beaon throughout the world to those living under totalitarian governments wishing for better lives. Although our particular battle is mental it must be insistent and persistent in denying evil, whether expressed as anarchy, chaos, hate, deceit – hell under any guise or mask. Our county at its best and true character is the embodiment of enlightened idealism well deserving the protection promised within the Psalm.
“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble…”

  6. Thank you Evan and everyone that has contributed!

After I graduated from Sunday School and started going to church I remember being confused when the readers read the second line of the Lord’s Prayer and its spiritual interpretation as follows (from S&H pg 16):

    Hallowed be Thy name.
    Adorable One.

While I understood “Hallowed be Thy name”, the spiritual interpretation of “Adorable One” didn’t resonate with me. But after many years of thinking about that, I finally got it.

The human experience seems to be full of concepts that, if we buy into them, would divide us from the precious oneness we experience through God-like thinking. The human mind loves to divide everyone into categories of political affiliation, ethnicity, age, etc. But spiritually based thinking does not include those divisions and instead sees everyone and everything as proceeding from the One God and therefore united in one harmonious experience, God’s reflection.

Recently I was looking at someone’s Facebook page and in their About info in response to “political affiliation” they wrote “I vote for the best candidate!” How refreshing is that? How wonderful would it be if the political parties were dissolved and instead politicians were allowed to vote for what they think is the best course of action without being influenced instead to vote a certain way just because their political party tells them to vote that way. How wonderful would it be if we no longer judged people by race, age, or any of the other “dividing” concepts of the human experience. Well the good news is that there is nothing that requires us to continue that divisive way of thinking. We can view everyone in the Adorable One right now and see man and the universe created and governed by God as stated in the quote above from S&H that Evan shared today!

    1. Thank you so much Brian! That line has also bothered me forever! WHat a marvellous way to explain it as you see it…I can accept that.

  7. One God governs, guides and protects all mankind.
Thank you, Evan, and Brian and all contributors.
I’m so grateful, each day, for the supply of ideas.
MBE gave us a real key…

  8. Went by a High school today, and all the children were sitting on the lawn at a reasonable distance. They seemed to be enjoying the companionship of being baCK to routine . So appreciated this normal activity. No hype no one experiencing anything but companionship ,
Thanks for encouragement from all . Enjoyed particularly”not to Worry”
Children have more faith than we give them credit.
    Thanks all

  9. “God governs through divine laws, laws of Principle, Love, and Truth, that inevitably triumph over all human conditions and circumstances, including political ones.” Thanks, Evan, for this absolute statement of fact. And thanks to all for your contributions!

  10. Your last paragraph with two sentences is so appreciated because very needed, dear Evan.
“Let God govern our thoughts and let us remember who is really in power and retain peace of mind” I love that passage as it is reassuring us of God`s everpresence and omnipotence. The lesson of this week tells us that there is only o n e God who is in control and governs all – wonderful!
This SpiritView says everything and comforts me so much – thank you very much for it, Evan!
Am also thankful for the lively conversation here from all the SpiritView friends, thank you !
