Look for the good and true

July 1, 2026 | 12 comments

If there are any people in your life giving you grief, acting hard to get along with, or difficult to understand, it’s an opportunity to see past the mortal façade they are presenting to their identity in the likeness of God.

Mary Baker Eddy tells us, “Man’s genuine selfhood is recognizable only in what is good and true” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 294).  Only what is “good and true” with God, is true for anyone, including yourself.

Anger, stubbornness, blind-will, mindlessness, selfishness, dishonesty, and their kin, are not the realities of God’s man.  They are lies about God’s man, and they have no staying power.  They are destined to be dissolved and replaced with the truth about God’s man.

God’s child is compassionate, cooperative with right, thoughtful, unselfish, and honest.  These spiritual qualities are present in every child of God.  To a material sense they may appear hidden.  But to spiritual sense, they surface and make an appearance.  Look for them!  You’ll see them quicker.

  1. Thanks, Evan, and for Mrs. Eddy! Much to work with in this, certainly for me, and overcoming years, decades even, of critical and judgmental thinking and experience! It gives a powerful reflection and deepening understanding of “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Sobering, and enlightening and motivating, to see how this can be so habitually and unconsciously violated, even in all the spiritual “unreality” of our very human tendencies, perceptions, and stuckness. Away with it! 🙂 (Beautiful picture, too!)

  2. Verse 1 from Hymn 565,, spiritually and: literally can lift up our thoughts to the good and the true = –

Rise up and walk, take up your bed. / With these few words the sickness fled. / Stretch forth your hand. Receive your sight. / Jesus’ commands reveal God’s might. / You are God’s purpose, His great design. / Beautiful, blameless, His child divine. / Holding your thought to the good and the true, / Spirit will form you anew.
    (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 565:1)

  3. I have to apply this in order not to fall prey to error’s insidious attempt to turn me from Truth by using unwitting people in my life to hurt me. It’s far easier to focus on their good, true qualities of being than sit and stew in a pot of resentment over error’s toxic embers where only I would be inhaling the poisonous vapors of another’s words or deeds.
My greatest mentor taught me. I say “taught” me, because I finally understand, to “Just Love!”

    2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (ESV)
    We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

Thank you Evan. I was out for a walk the other day and came across tiny, delicate flowers called Yarrow. It struck me as God expressing Himself/Herself, as each flower appeared to represent perfection, innocence and pureness – our spiritual identity, which is our only identity. If I’m irritated or annoyed with someone, or even myself, then the view is being absent, not deserving, or maybe even kicked out of The Kingdom of Heaven. But that’s an impossibility, since this is where “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28),

  5. Thank you with all my heart for this timely message! Exactly the truth I need for today! And thanks to others who shared references and reflections ❣️

  7. Thank you dear Evan, such a timely message to ponder and absorb. In a
world that seems constantly mesmerized by the material senses and
influences, trying to sway our thoughts from an ever-increasing, more
aggressive montage of erroneous false beliefs, which encourages with
what divides, rather than what heals – your message is like a beacon of
Hope that shines brightly – to live our lives with such inspiration,
Christliness, purity and joy. Where the complete opposite seems to
scream at us that the material is what governs our thought, it Truly is a
blessing to appreciate this divine guidance.
Appreciate the Love you share in these Spirit Views and it brings a much
    needed sense of Peace.
