No connection between aging and disease

May 18, 2021 | 37 comments

If you find yourself in the category of “advancing years,” be sure to know that your health is coming freely and abundantly from God as always. It doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been walking the planet, your ability to stay healthy in God’s image remains the same. It does not decline over time.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Except for the error of measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful, man would enjoy more than threescore years and ten and still maintain his vigor, freshness, and promise. Man, governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 246).

As we grow in our understanding of Life eternal with God, our experience with life grows more beautiful, happier, and healthier. We gain wisdom, insight, inspiration, joy, and spiritual mindedness that bless us and multiply in good effect as time rolls on. Our experience with life on earth should be an ever-increasing good one.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no connection between disease and aging. The passing of time does not create disease. There is no correlation between time and disease.

Disease stems from false beliefs and fears accepted into consciousness, not from the passing of time. One can pass time, decades of it, and keep thought filled with the presence of Truth and Love that create immunity to disease.

In spiritual truth, man is not a deteriorating mortal, but a spiritual being reflecting the eternal substance, Life, and health of God. Embrace this truth about man and live it out to the fullest. Many have done it successfully. You can be one of them!

Have no fear of years. Love God instead. Grow in understanding of spiritual reality with each advancing moment, and enjoy the benefits.

  1. Such a helpful reminder Evan! I particularly loved this:

“Disease stems from false beliefs and fears accepted into consciousness, not from the passing of time.”

Humanly it’s easy to see why people might associate age with increasing risk of disease … because that’s what humanity as a whole believes is the ‘norm’! And as one practitioner once told me, “you experience what you believe” …

I’m still learning how to put this into practice, but we always have a choice what we believe … nothing is fact except our spiritual perfection and immunity from anything inharmonious. If we resolutely believe this and understand why it’s true, and bar our thoughts to any other suggestions, our health will be perfectly maintained.

Thanks for taking the time to craft these beautiful nuggets of wisdom for us each day!

  2. The Being and unfoldment of divine order requires neither timeline nor accretion of illusory mortal substance.

  3. Thank u Evan , as I awakened to pray, your message clicked in. Glory be to God, through our Savior our precious Jesus, the Christ.

  4. False beliefs are also called attack-thoughts for they attack the Truth. These thoughts and other grievances are what causes illness, according to Jesus in A Course in Miracles. For our life and health it is essential to let them go.

  5. Interestingly the 2 apparently “fittest & healthiest ” people at our church are 81 and 100 and the youngest person in it passed on at least 30 years too early, so, even humanly speaking we should never assume anything, simply because of age.

I knew someone who was always very “healthy” but as soon as everyone including her made a big deal about her age as she neared 90, she started to have problems…. let’s focus on the good we have done and plan to do rather than the numbers. What is a year? NOTHING! If a thousand years is as a day to God, as the Bible states and we are Gods manifestation, then these years should not affect us except as improvement as the life experience continues

  6. One of my fondest memories is from University days when a CS practitioner invited me back to her home after a testimony meeting. Before we sat dowm, this practioner of advanced years looked me in the eye, and I saw eternality in both her and me. The sense of being a “fish out of water”, far from home, and out of my depth, was replaced by the profundity of what I truly was, – she saw in me the perfect man, and that was reflected in her own understanding and demonstration.
Thank you Evan for this ageless reminder!

    1. So very lovely, Ken. She saw no myth of human concept…

“The blood, heart, lungs, brain, etc. have nothing to do with Life, God. Every function of man is governed by the divine Mind. The myth of human mind has no power to kill or to cure, and it has no control over God’s man. The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness.” (S&H 151:18-24)

      Life

S&H 151:18-24: “The blood, heart, lungs, brain, etc. have nothing to do with Life, God. Every function of man is governed by the divine Mind. The myth of human mind has no power to kill or cure, and it has no control over God’s man. The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness.”

  7. Thank you Evan for you words of wisdom, and for everyone’s comments.
God is my strength and song, just like this week’s lesson and always.

  8. God is timeless and always. Everything is in the now, and reflects God. Since God doesn’t know deterioration neither can his/her reflection.

  9. Thank you Evan for the uplifting blog today. Age seems to embrace everyone’s thoughts even young children, “how old are you now? being the question adults often ask children as well as each other as we progress through this phase of our experience. Age does not exist in God’s kingdom of which Christ Jesus told us is within each of us. If we counted the daily expressions of our true nature, age would not be a question at all and we would revel in our true spiritual existence and rejoice that we are whole, reflecting the infinite All in All having no beginning nor ending. Each day then would be filled with blessings.

  10. 5 years ago I was with a small group in the Sahara. We interviewed a nomad family who lived in a tent and that spent their life the hard way roaming the desert stopping on occasion to buy supplies at a local livestock market that was filthy. That was their only interaction with others outside of their extended family. When asked about modern day diseases and how it affected them, they looked confounded, they had never heard of or experienced any of what we are daily bombarded with though the media. Living in circumstance we would abhor they lived very healthy lives beyond 100 years never giving thought to sickness. When asked what they believed kept them healthy they shrugged their shoulders and said maybe the tea we drink! No fears or false beliefs were in their consciousness. What a lesson this was to me. Thank you Evan for your daily insights and blessings.

  11. I have seen a commercial (~ never really paid attention to what it is for) where an older lady states, “Age is just a number and mine is Unlisted”. How true! It is mortal belief that limits our propensities. I have found lately and more so with this belief of a pandemic, that I am ascending more and more away from the “material” things and they just are not that important. Thank you all for your expressions of ageless inspiration that shines light on
all of these topics that Evan so thoughtfully shares with us.

  12. ;The Lord has appeared of old unto me saying; yea I have loved thee with an EVERLASTING Love; therefore with loving kindness I have drawn thee….’ Jer 31;
Wonderful post today Evan. I am loved and joyful in the foreverNOW, the fulfilled effect of the one Cause…omnipresent Mind❣️….and this includes everyone.

  13. As part of completing my degree Recreation and Park Management we college kids ran a senior camp for senior citizens that was a lot like summer camp with the same songs and activities except that they drank cocktails and decided who would sleep with whom when. The most popular camper was a woman who was 99 1/2 years old who had climbed every major peak in North America in long wool skirts that when wet weighed more than my daughter’s modern backpack full of two weeks of supplies, and her skirts blowing in the wind did not get tangled in her ice ax or climbing ropes. She wore very thin leather pointed high top lace boots with hardly any tread in the snow and ice that would’ve had my feet cold in the mild Eugene, Oregon spring. And she never experienced frostbite or high altitude sickness or hypothermia. She was infatigable, full of vitality, confidence, joy, and curiosity. She figured that the more experience she had in life, the wiser and the healthier she should get.

For years I was a friend and Christian science nurse or Christian science practitioner for a woman who was notorious for her entire life being full of criticism and complaint, blaming others for her unhappiness. She kept saying she wanted to die because she did not like the way the people in the world were. And I would keep saying I understood and I loved her and that would not solve her problems or complete her life assignments. She would do the “yeah, but…s” about Christian Science, and allow the latest healing of the then acute problem and continue for years refusing to love our Creator with all her heart, mind, and soul and to delight in and love herself including all of creation and others. She would get angry at me each time I would heal her from dying. Then after she was 100 years old she had an attitude of gratitude, she was forgiving and gracious, caring Lee curious and humble, empathetic, and compassionate. She was the happiest she’s ever been her last several years after 100 even though she no longer had her Oregon, beautiful home, or as much activity, and even though she only had one bedside table of belongings and shared a small smelly room in a horrible nursing home with a grumpy roommate and lousy services. She brought so much joy to others and win it was finally time for her to graduate, she could do it with peace and joy and love.

This afternoon I am going to deliver several cut roses from my garden to a friend for her one hundredth birthday I have to be careful about the timing because she’s so actively going everywhere. Until Covid she was actively dancing several times a week, and she still has outside yoga outside her back patio in the lawn. Last week she got a lifetime achievement award for her decades promoting calligraphy and her current award-winning calligraphy she continues to do. She maintains a beautiful orderly clean home full of the art she does, her excellent cooking, and the mini books She continues to read. She has found ways during Covid to continue her active service to her church, community, and political justice. She continues to learn every day and to bless everyone she meets. She is obviously healthier and happier Than most people I see in our 20s and 30s.

Just as God told me decades ago when I was feeling severely sleep deprived, “it is not the quantity of hours of unconsciousness, but the moments of divine consciousness that restores, rests, and heals.” I think the same goes for decades and how we live our life, whether it is of egos fear or of love and gratitude expressed in service.

  14. Dear Evan, thank you for this powerful treatment that counters and neutralizes age related beliefs in mortal thought. The fact is we are not mortal, we are eternal expressions of Infinite Mind! Especially love “Have no fear of years. Love God instead.” And thank you Edith for the lovely life examples of ageless being.

  15. I read this in an interview with Dr. Laurance Doyle, a Christian Scientist and notes astrophysicist, on the topic of time, “Basically what we’re measuring is the orbit of the earth around the sun….. there is no relationship between the orbit of the earth around the sun and the aging of the human body, There is no relationship there — not even totally material observation supports one.” (The article is titled The Redundancy of Time: An Astrophysicist’s View Sentinel May 5, 1997, sorry I don’t have a link). Interesting.

Also need some support today. Found out that a good friend of mine was hospitalized and diagnosed with the current belief of harmful virus. I became afraid but calmed myself and prayed to see that what he truly is, his true qualities and how I know him– vitality, kindness, goodness, intelligence, sense of humor, giving — none of these things can be diminished one whit. He is not matter but pure spirit and God has not left him. People are calling me up and trying to give me material details and descriptions and predictions. Plus the fact that he is unvaccinated (not a Christian Scientist) makes me worry that people will say, see what happens when you don’t take a shot.

I see the true picture of this dear man, but it’s a bit shaky, mortal beliefs are pulling hard on my thought. Any support is appreciated, thank you so very much and love to all!

    1. Dear Rose. I would take the personalities out of the picture…that is for your friend and those who wish to elaborate about matter. Each one is a spiritual being…an individual surrounded by Gods Love and engaging with Gods plan. And, don’t forget this includes you! Free yourself from human opinion . It is the Christ ( Love) in you that has the power. Praying with you. Much Love.

      1. Barbara, thank you so much for your kindness and support, it means a lot. All blessings to you!

    2. Rose,
“Worry is a prayer for something you don’t want.” Is a sentence I learned right here on SpiritView.
I was texting a dear friend when he kept texting “No, No, No many times over. His wife called an ambulance, He was taken to the hospital. Troubled I was in sympathy with matter, fearing for my friend.
I called a practitioner. She asked just how I saw my friend. “Do you visualize him as a fallen, sick mortal?
That got me praying. I began to see him mentally as a perfect man, like I have always known him.
That gave me a peaceful feeling. I didn’t believe in the lie that my friend was ill beyond his control.
Replacing the error with the truth of being in my thought, word was received that nothing could be found wrong with him. They kept him several days in the hospital, nothing showing up in their many tests.
(My friend is not a Christian Scientist, but is a Christian. A potential Christian Scientist.)
If people go into a medical facility most of the time it is diagnosed as the pandemic. Anything at all boil’s down to that. Economics, trends, and beliefs. “There is no material truth” Its all a lie.
Just love, love, love your beautiful, perfect friend.
      Lovingkindness,
      David

      1. David, I appreciate your sharing these truths. As I prayed about my friend this morning I thought of this very story about your friend who was hospitalized, which you shared a while back on SpiritView. I was going to look back and try to find it because I loved the way you prayed about it. How in tune you were with my thoughts to have kindly shared it again, very helpful. Thank you for your wisdom and support.

        1. My memory is very full of life’s experience. The hard part of this volume of history is to wash away the erroneous memories, ones that burdens my vessel of consciousness.
I asked the most perfect practitioner I have ever known, who was heaven sent, just why these negative memories keep coming to mind. She said “So they can be washed away.”
I decided that I needed better soap. Bad memories take up space which is reserved for God ideas. I wash them away now by advancing into new territory. A place where only love abides.
Purity is what I need. Purifying self and sense. Putting off the old with the new. Being reborn of the Spirit, continually.
You have given me pure and uplifting, heartfelt loving kindness. That displaces much error.
You are God’s perfect, pure, ideal woman. Thank you for your comments. They are healing.

  16. If a “day with the Lord is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day”, then we’re all as fresh as a newborn possessing the wisdom, health and agility “of the ancients”

  17. OH! Another extraordinary Sunday School Class, sharing so many marvelous ideas ! Thank you all.
I have always read Mrs. Eddy’s statement this way:
“Each SUCCEEDING year unfolds wisdom, beauty snd holiness.
We continue to SUCCEED each New Day~ the unfoldment of Good!!

  18. I usually come to .Spirit View first thing in the morning.
I am enjoying it so very much last thing in my day❣️
I absolutely love every single comment you wonderful children of God share. You are such a blessing Evan.
    Endless LOVE❣️❣️❣️

  19. Carol, thanks for “Age is just a number and mine is Unlisted”. And thanks to Martine and LP for the links to Laurancle Doyle’s interviews. I have heard him speak several times and he is truly amazing.

  20. Last week one morning I had a lot of pain in a foot and thought started swirling around how was I going to manage this and how was I going to manage that, etc. As I sat on the edge of the bed trying to get up, the thought came to me “this is just a temptation”. As I started thinking about this, I started seeing how everything that tries to take our thought away from God and what God is doing is a temptation. And Jesus showed us how to deal with temptation- speak the truth to it and tell it “get thee hence”. I went about my day able to do whatever needed to be done and either that night or the next morning there was not even a remnant of the pain. It has changed my thought to now view everything unlike God such as ageing, disease, limitation, loneliness, etc. as a temptation which I am finding a very useful and beneficial way of seeing things.
