The one best habit

July 5, 2017 | 15 comments

Do you have any bad habits you’d like to get rid of? Who doesn’t!

One approach to reforming behavior is to understand that the one most important behavior man possesses is that of reflecting the wisdom and intelligence of God.

Bad habits often make us feel helpless, like we can’t do anything about our behavior. But this isn’t true. God gave us dominion to think intelligently, act wisely and follow through with what is in our best interest.

Part of breaking bad habits is to understand better the one good habit God gave us in the first place—the ability to listen, hear and act on God’s direction.

We are not helpless mortals at the mercy of uncontrollable physical appetites, sensations and impulses. We are thinking beings that reflect the Mindfulness of God.

God is in absolute control of His actions, and we reflect this truth, making us in control of our actions too.

The control we possess from God is not manifest through self-will, human will, or brute force. It is a divine grace expressed as spiritual mindedness, peace of mind, dominion, spiritual contentment, gratitude, Spirit-based joy, and other qualities and conditions of Spirit at work in our true being as children of God.

It is a joy to reflect God’s presence—to be peaceful, satisfied, grateful, and spiritually minded. It’s a habit that is built into our being as offspring of the divine. It’s the way God made us. It’s one habit that will always leave you feeling blessed for embracing.

  1. I love your message in this blog, Evan. Thank you.
Learning to discipline our lives helps us find deep satisfaction.
This statement stood out to me “We are thinking beings that reflect the mindfulness of God”.

  2. Ties in perfectly with your two previous spirit views. Once we declare our independence from unwise habits and declare our dependence on God we will achieve the inner calm and peace.

  3. Love the idea that we are not helpless but empowered to overcome unlovely habits. God gives us dominion over things of the earth. We have reflected dominion, reflected grace, reflected intelligence, reflected wisdom, reflected calm. A precious friend sent me this quote from Mary Baker Eddy yesterday and it blended beautifully (I think) with your blog today, Evan. Thank you for sending these amazing gems out into the universe of thought. So thankful you are listening and then sharing with us. Was thinking how your blog is like a ripple effect going out into the world of thinkers!

“Let the voice of Truth and Love be heard above the dire din of mortal nothingness, and the majestic march of Christian Science go on ad infinitum, praising God, doing the works of primitive Christianity, and enlightening the world.”

  4. Life is habit forming therefore forming the habit of meekness which gives us the capability to listen to God’s guidance through selfless following Truth and Love is progress. Thank you Evan for this post of truthful guidance.

  5. Thanks so much for this message! I’ve been working on listening and obeying God’s messages. I know life is much better, much smoother, when I do! I will work on applying this to lift myself out of bad habits. When stressed, I tend to engage in shopping therapy, but that is definitely a bad habit! And unsustainable. Turning to God is much better, and much more fruitful.

  6. this one to be copied pasted onto my screen……..so helpful & a great reminder every waking moment! again, thanks Evan, you are a blessing to me my family & all!

  7. Oh so good, thank you very much Evan for this inspiring and clearly understandable lesson on our real habit to reflect God`s presence in all the wonderful qualities like peacefulness, spiritual satisfaction, gratitude, spiritual-mindedness and endless more!

So comforting to know that I am not helpless in view of seeming bad habits I face. Very loving that God`s grace lets us have dominion and control over the unwanted habits and not human will. I am so grateful and glad about this absolute divine Truth.

Only the last sentence I regrettably do not quite understand, i.e. “to leave you feeling blessed for embracing”

thank you dear Evan, so needed today 🙂

And thank you for all your comments dear commenter-friends 🙂

  8. I like this- this is a keeper.
    This changes my perspective of
    Of looking at habits!
    Thank you Evan.

  9. Thanks Evan for the lovely inspiration. This one especially is so helpful and encouraging. When we are trying to reform and the bad habit keeps coming back, we certainly feel very helpless. But as you say “God is in absolute control of His actions, and we reflect this truth, making us in control of our actions too. Reflecting upon this is surely going to help. This control which we express from God, is a divine grace of God in our life, as His children.
Certainly this good habit of being calm and able to listen to God’s guidance and act upon it, to reflect His presence in our life by being grateful, peaceful, spiritual minded, joyful is not something which we are struggling to do, but its already built into our being as the offspring of God. We need to accept that this is our natural self, the way God made us..Then things will certainly work out.
This is a habit which we all love to embrace in our life and be blessed..in other words we would love to keep this habit very close to our heart and feel blessed and happy for doing so…

    1. Almighty has his own plans for us, what we need is the patience and be happy and content and trust his ways and methods to transform us finally. There is no end to desires, we all have come to this planet for giving our best in every sphere and that is the only job we are supposed to do and stay happy and blessed. Be patient, HE is there is to count our efforts and for bestowing the results. Feeling blessed to get the opportunity to read this blog.

  10. thank you so much Nergish – happy to understand Evan`s last sentence of today`s SpiritView now:-)

  11. Isn’t it great to know that we are constantly reflecting only God, good? That is a permanent habit. Thanks for the reminder, Evan.
