Please spiritual sense rather than personal sense

August 19, 2022 | 17 comments

Have you ever had someone make demands on you that you didn’t feel comfortable following, but decided to follow anyway to keep the other person happy? Then after a while, even though you did what they wanted, they still weren’t happy? If so, it’s a case of trying to please personal sense, and then getting turned on by personal sense.

The wiser course of action is to please spiritual sense above personal sense.

Spiritual sense is our ability to hear God’s inspired ideas and follow them.

Personal sense is human mind wants and desires.

Human mind wants and desires are fickle. They change. There is nothing absolute about them. They are often misguided and can lead to bad outcomes.

For a good result, consult spiritual sense first when making decisions. Listen to what Principle has to say. What is the honest, moral, and spiritually correct action to take?

When guided by spiritual sense, the outcome will always be best for everyone involved, even if there is some short-term complaining.

As the apostle Paul wrote, “Our purpose is to please God, not people” (I Thes. 2:4, NLT).

  1. Thank you Evan. I’ve noticed in Science and Health that “spiritual sense” is associated with Soul, or perhaps the manifestation of Soul in the idea man, as in this statement:

“Then Jacob questioned his deliverer, “Tell me, I pray thee, thy name;” but this appellation was withheld, for the messenger was not a corporeal being, but a nameless, incorporeal impartation of divine Love to man, which, to use the word of the Psalmist, restored his Soul, — gave him the spiritual sense of being and rebuked his material sense.”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 308:32)

And in the spiritual interpretation of the 23 Psalm on page 578 of S&H there is this:

“[LOVE] restoreth my soul [spiritual sense]:”

Finally on page 210 there is this statement:

“Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation.”

I’ve always read this citation and thought of the attributes of Soul as perfect eyesight, perfect hearing, etc. But today I read a sentinel article that brought out the attributes of Soul to be joy, freedom, harmony, immortality. Wouldn’t that mean that man’s spiritual sense perceives only Soul’s attributes? Therefore as I silence personal sense by focusing on the attributes of Soul (as perceived via spiritual sense), I experience those attributes in my experience as Love providing every human need.

    1. Thanks RH for your thoughts on spiritual sense perceiving the divine qualities of Soul; and thank you for the article, I look forward to reading it.

      1. Thank you for your comment too Rose and for your comments every day. Yesterday you ended your comment with “love to all” and I wanted to reply back with “Love to you too Rose” but it was so late I didn’t think you’d see it. So I’ll share that with you today!

During your meeting tonight you can remember that Soul is being manifested through everyone at the meeting. And it may not appear that way to your material senses, but if you use your spiritual sense you will definitely perceive it. Your can also perceive when you should speak and when you should just sit quietly and know that God is speaking to everyone there and therefore God will unfold the right outcome to everyone. I had an experience like that at a Branch Church meeting once that I still remember. I remember getting anxious during the meeting because it seemed a decision was being made that I disagreed with but I quieted those false beliefs and just KNEW that God was in control. The end result was an outcome that everyone agreed with.

      2. Hmmm…Right after sending my last comment above I noticed the line ““[LOVE] restoreth my soul [spiritual sense]:” from S&H. It occurred to me that could mean “The act of >loving< enables us to perceive through spiritual sense". So just loving everyone at your meeting tonight is a good way bring the right idea of each person and everything into view via your spiritual sense.

        1. Dear RH, I so appreciate your time and thoughts regarding the concerns I had about the community meeting. I actually received a message (after I left my comments here) that the meeting has been rescheduled to next week, which gave me a sense of relief, maybe it was not the right moment for it, in God’s time. Anyway now I have more chance to pray about it and get my thought clear. I will definitely work with the excellent spiritual perspectives you shared. And thank you for your loving message in response to my “Love to all” closing yesterday. So much love to you too!

    2. Dear RH, thank you very much for that article on SOUL! It is very helpful and inspiring. I also love the Testimony of the seemingly stottering man. It witnesses healing following the childlike humility of that man. Humility has such a healing aspect of SOUL!
Regarding the toppic here, to please spiritual sense, I would say in short “in all things God first” ! But in several cases one should listen to God what to do best, yes, to please God in every instance makes a happy life! ♡
Thank you Evan, I love your helpful and healing SpiritView ; it is so inspiring and lively and eye-opening in combination with all the interesting and lovely comments – Thank you all very much!♡

  2. I pray to know that I (and everyone) can fully lean on Spiritual Sense “to hear God’s inspired ideas and follow them.”

I’m going to a meeting later today of committee members at a neighborhood organization. There are seemingly differing personalities and divergent ideas about how to move the organization forward. I feel a bit nervous about how it will go. I detect some human will or outlining on my part. So I need to let go and lean fully on the reality that it is God’s organization and He is lovingly governing and guiding every aspect of it and every one of His children involved. A comforting thought.

  3. Thanks Evan for this message of encouragement!
This offers courage and kindness to any of us — to please God, not mortal mind (s),
Then we stay true to ourself — as God made us. We can help others, without caving in to the demands of personalities.or popular temptations. Then we please God!

Today is WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY proclaimed by the UN..
I am grateful for the many people working as humanitrians in rough and dangerous areas of he world, Putting others before their own safety and needs. They are obeying the Golden Rule.
The greatest Humanitarian of all time is Christ Jesus. And I am grateful for Mary Baker Eddy who followed him, and gave the world the gift of spiritual understanding of His life!

  4. Thanks so much, Evan. All SpiritViews provide wonderful inspiration. This one answered a specific problem I have been dealing with, trying to appease another person while sacrificing my reliance on Christian Science for a specific healing. I had been praying for an answer and this SpiritView provided it in as clear terms as anyone could ever imagine. God is good.
