  1. Book knowledge is not what Nelson Mandela is talking about (at least I don’t think so). He is talking about the kind of education that broadens and uplifts human thought beyond the mortal. Perhaps the kind of education that frees us from mistaken concepts of man and the universe. Science and Health states: Being is holiness, harmony, immortality. It is already proved that a knowledge of this, even in small degree, will uplift the physical and moral standard of mortals, will increase longevity, will purity and elevate character. Thus progress will finally destroy all error, and bring immortality to light.” (p. 492)

  2. It’s always interesting to me how often great thinkers think alike.

At the turn of the last century the great Crow Indian chief Plenty Coups said “Education is your greatest weapon. With it you are the white man’s equal. Without it you are his victim and so shall remain all your lives”. He then led his people an entirely different direction and preserved them largely intact.

Spiritual education most certainly allows us to free ourselves from the “slavery of our own beliefs and from the educational systems of the Pharoahs who today, as of yore, hold the children of Israel in bondage.” MBE

  3. True, true, Grace & Big Sky, & wise Mandela. But an important qualifier –>

There is a danger in assuming that classroom education and diplomas
are the essence of ‘education’ and assure the skills & habits to thrive.

Effective education starts very young and needs to go on all thru life.
It is primarily a personal, purposeful effort to explore and apply, & think reflectively.
It is best when ‘self-directed’, receptive, searching, not just ceremonial
certification. My 30 yrs as a professor teaches me the limits of the classroom to deliver EDUCATION, spiritual or human. But it might help.

  4. I agree. That’s why I specified spiritual education.
After30 years in the classroom I well know the limits of academic education.
    Thanks for clarifying.

  5. Well, Big Sky, I was only nudging a little more leverage.
And it is worth pursuing further how this kind of
    education is demonstrated.

  6. One way in which classroom education and spiritual education are similar is that the more we learn, the more we see how much is still before us to discover. I am grateful that divine Mind is leading us all on in our search for Truth. Thank you all for your thoughtful posts.

  7. I spent 10 years going to night school and another 3 years for a Graduate Degree all while working full time and doing shift work.

Although I gain knowledge and used the credentials to teach I and acquired numerous positions along with a 21 year career, I find the best information and most helpful my senior years reading Christian Science material, Life of Ms. Eddy, Daily Bible Lessons and attending CS Lectures which enhance the richness of my daily life.
